If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/4/14

The weekend is going by way too fast for me. I swear, I have no idea where Saturday went. On a good note, it’s a great week for TV, and that starts tonight. Megan would’ve been here, but her poor dog tried to eat a porcupine, so she spent Saturday night at the vet’s, getting him de-quilled and sewn up. Poor thing. JJ’s busy with school and work, so it’s just Kyle and me here to give our recommendations. 🙂 (Oh, and Happy Star Wars Day. 😉 May the fourth be with you…)

americasbestcooksmallI’ve really been enjoying America’s Best Cook. It’s a cooking competition show, which you know I love, and one of the mentors if my favorite celebrity chef, Michael Symon. What’s not to love? Last week, Chef Ron Ben-Israel was the judge for the dessert with bacon episode. Ben, on Cat Cora’s Team South, cut his finger bad enough in the middle of the first challenge that he had to go to the hospital to get it stitched up. Therefore, when he came back in time for the Pressure Cooker, he was able to make a PB&J dish and pulled it off well enough to have the best dish in the Pressure Cooker round, so he stayed in the competition. Sheri and Phillip, both from Tyler Florence’s team, got sent to the Pressure Cooker, too. In the end, Phillip went home because his mousse was good, but the rest of the dish showed a lack of thought and planning and skill.

I’m excited about this episode because from the previews, Stephanie, on Team North, has it out with Chef Symon over cooking fish. She makes some comment about thinking Chef Symon’s never cooked a fish in his life, so she’s basically ignoring him… Ballsy move, and more than a little stupid. So we’ll see if she wises up or not!

On tonight’s episode, “Mentor Meltdown,” as each chef contestant continues in their quest for the title of America’s Best Cook, they are tasked with competing in a brunch challenge, one of the hottest food trends. Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian serves as a guest judge.

To find out who stays and who goes tonight, tune in to Food Network at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing American Dream Builders, America’s Funniest Home Videos, Food Court Wars, Signed Sealed Delivered, Believe, Cutthroat Kitchen, Hungry Investors, The Mentalist, & Salem.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 3/9/14

As I write this up, I’m watching the last new episode of Grimm. What an amazing episode. There are a lot of other great shows this week, tonight included, so check out our recommendations. 🙂

catchacontractorsmallThere’s a new show starting tonight, called Catch a Contractor. Host Adam Carolla spent 10 years working construction, becoming a master carpenter, before his career in radio & television took off. In this new show, he and his team—consisting of no-nonsense, expert contractor Skip Bedell and his wife, private investigator Alison Bedell—are on a mission to track down shady, evasive contractors who duped and abandoned home owners, leaving them with either unfinished or danger-laden, uninhabitable homes due to poor craftsmanship. Carolla & the Bedells will drag the contractors back to the scene of the crime to face the music and fix the disasters they left behind.

I don’t generally watch Spike TV, but it looks like it’ll be a lot of fun. I love shows on HGTV, which is where this would fit well on, but I’ll give it a chance on Spike. There are two episodes every week, so hopefully they’ll be enjoyable!

On tonight’s first episode, “No Way Jose,” the team brings back a contractor to help a family who’s been forced to sleep on the living room floor. Then on the second episode, “An Avi-ously Dangerous Home,” open sewer pipes and infestations are making homeowners sick, so the team forces him to fix the disaster he created.

Check out the first two episodes of this new show tonight on Spike TV at 10/9c & 10:30/9:30c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Food Court Wars, Chopped: Tournament of Stars, Resurrection, Cutthroat Kitchen, & The Mentalist.

Our Thoughts on the ABC 2013-14 Pilot Trailers

Megan, Kyle, & I have gotten a chance to watch the trailers & clips for all the new network shows, and we’re here to give you our opinions on what might be worth watching—based on the trailers alone. Our opinions may (most likely WILL) change after we get a chance to view the pilots, but for now, this is what we’re thinking. Check out our thoughts on the ABC trailers now, and then come back over the next few days to check out our responses to the other networks.

Let’s start off with the dramas…in alphabetical order:

Betrayal

  • Jenny: Honestly, this is probably one I’ll skip even watching the pilot, simply because I know my tastes. This is a drama through and through—much like Nashville and Scandal have turned out to be. I don’t mind a little drama for drama’s sake if it’s in a cop, law, or medical show, but when it’s all about drama, no thanks. – Most Likely 1 and Done.
  • Megan: This trailer left me wanting more. I’m sure there are going to be a lot of people who say that the infidelity angle has been done too many times. I am not one of those people. This a mom who feels alone in her marriage and a man that sparks something in her that she thought was gone. It’s a difficult place to be, and I’m not sure what I would do, but I do know that watching this woman’s life change around her is going to make for good TV. – Curious.
  • Kyle: This looks more like something that belongs on Lifetime. Seems to be very thin on plot and heavy on the sex scenes. I would have thought this was another Shonda Rhimes show based on that trailer. – Most Likely 1 and Done.
