If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/5/14

This is the beginning of a busy week in television, and I am very excited because that means some of my favorite shows are back with all new episodes. Let’s not waste any more time. Take a look at what we’re recommending tonight.

Megan’s Choice

choppedsmallFood Network really is one of my favorite channels to watch, and one of the biggest reasons is Chopped. This is one of those cooking shows that has chefs just competing against each other course by course, in intense moments of stress. When the chefs are given certain ingredients for the different rounds, I always cringe a bit, because at times, there are a few ingredients that are more than difficult, if not even slightly disgusting, in the mix. I’ve seen moments of using strawberry milk powder in the appetizer round, which really sounds difficult and slightly nasty-tasting. It’s fabulous, high-speed cooking that you too should be tuning in for.

On tonight’s episode, “Cooking Creatively with Kitchen Scraps,” the chefs must make use of ingredients that are usually thrown out; the competitors have to get creative with a little bit of salad dressing and some paltry scraps of poultry; using fruit and veggie peels in desserts.

To see which chef serves the rubbish in the most delectable way, tune in to Food Network at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching Guy’s Grocery Games, Cutthroat Kitchen, and The Mentalist.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 11/17/13

It’s the start of a new week, and I’m excited because there’s some great TV on this week. As I write this up, I’m actually watching the “Red John” episode for The Mentalist. Sometimes, I love being me. 😉 But that’s for next week. For tonight, there’s still plenty on, so check out our recommendations.

Jenny’s Choice

thementalist1117smallOn last week’s The Mentalist, Jane met with the Red John suspects, holding them at gunpoint until they showed their left arms. Really not surprising to me, Bret Stiles & Ray Haffner were both clean, but the other three—Sheriff McAllister, Reede Smith, and Gale Bertram—all had the tattoo of the three red dots. Just before Lisbon showed up, we heard a gunshot, and then as Lisbon was running up to the house, there was an explosion. So who lived, who died, and why did three of them have the tattoo? I know the answers to those questions. Tonight’s and next week’s episodes are fantastic, so don’t miss them!

On tonight’s episode, “The Great Red Dragon,” following the shocking events at Jane’s house, the Red John list is narrowed down further, and the CBI’s priority is the remaining suspects.

Find out who, if anyone died in the explosion and how far they can narrow the Red John list tonight on CBS at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing America’s Funniest Home Videos, Almost Human, Cousins Undercover, Guy’s Grocery Games, Restaurant Express, & On the Rocks.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 10/20/13

Yay for Sunday, because that means it’s the start of a new week of TV, and lemme tell ya, this has been a great season so far. Over the last week, we’ve seen a couple more cancelations, a good handful of full-season pick-ups and orders for more episodes, and the great news that not only is Brooklyn Nine-Nine getting a full season, but it won the coveted post-Super Bowl spot! So there’s lots to be happy about today, including what we recommend tonight, so read on!

Jenny’s Choice

thementalist1020smallLast week’s The Mentalist didn’t narrow down the list of Red John suspects much. It looked like Sheriff McAllister was a great candidate because he seemed to fear heights, but then he climbed up and walked across the steep roof to save Patrick Jane without so much as blinking an eye. But then he’s also afraid of pigeons. So who the heck knows! On a completely different note, Rigsby needed to create a diversion to help set up the killer, and the choice he made was to propose in the middle of the reception. It was very sweet, and Van Pelt looked absolutely stunned, but she accepted, and at the end of the episode, their little wedding by a judge was great. I loved seeing Jane tear up as he watched through the door.

I’ve seen tonight’s episode, and I have to say—without spoiling anything—it completely messed with my head. Who I THOUGHT was Red John clearly isn’t, and who I thought for sure WASN’T Red John might actually be. It’s a very dark episode, and there’s a great return of a fun character, so I’m looking forward to watching it again with my kiddo tonight.

On tonight’s episode, “Red Listed,” Jane reveals that a list of fake Red John suspects he planted was stolen, and the team realizes these men are in danger. Aunjanue Ellis, William Mapother, Kevin Corrigan, & Drew Powell guest star.

See if they can narrow down the Red John suspects tonight on CBS at 10:30/9:30c. (Special time because of football.)

I’ll also be watching/DVRing America’s Funniest Home Videos, Cousins Undercover, Guy’s Grocery Games, Halloween Wars, Queer Eye: Reunion: 10 Years Later, & Cutthroat Kitchen.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 9/29/13

It’s Sunday, and a busy one at that! In fact, the week is just about as busy as last week. And it’s hard to believe that after today, there’s only one more day left in September! The year has flown by. As for tonight, Megan has been out of town this weekend, but she was planning to talk about the season premiere of The Amazing Race. So aside from that, here’s what the rest of us are recommending. 🙂

Jenny’s Choice

thementalist929smallTonight is the season premiere of The Mentalist. Last season, Jane narrowed the search for Red John down to seven names. He’s getting closer to figuring out who’s behind the murder of his wife and daughter and countless others. And it’s someone we’ve met, one of the following men: Bret Stiles, Gale Bertram, Ray Haffner, Reede Smith, Robert Kirkland, Sheriff Thomas McCallister, and Brett Partridge. We’ve been promised that the Red John arc will be wrapped up this season—I believe by mid-season, in fact. I’m glad, because really, enough is enough. I want to see where they’ll take the characters—especially Jane and Lisbon. Owain Yeoman and Amanda Righetti are leaving the show around mid-season, and since I’ve seen the premiere, I know they’re still a couple. It’ll be interesting to see how they’re written out of the show.

On tonight’s episode, “The Desert Rose,” Jane and Lisbon secretly continue their dangerous mission to narrow down the list of seven Red John suspects as they investigate the murder of a man who was missing for two years. Michael Gaston, Jack Plotnick, Josie Davis, & Lauren Stamile guest star.

To see the season premiere, tune in to CBS at 10:01/9:01c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Rachael vs. Guy: Kids Cook-Off, The Great Food Truck Race, & Cutthroat Kitchen.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/12/13

The TV world is starting to wind down for summer, but there’s still a few things to keep us busy. Let’s see what we think you should be watching.

Megan’s Choice

familytree512smallTonight is the series premiere of Family Tree on HBO, and I’m curious to say the least. Something about another HBO comedy excites me, because if it’s good, it’s always SO good! Let’s hope it’s good.

The story revolves around the journey of 30-year-old Tom Chadwick (Chris O’Dowd), a man who has few roots, little family, and a somewhat unsure sense of his purpose in life. Having recently lost his job and girlfriend, Tom inherits a mysterious box of belongings from a great-aunt he doesn’t remember ever meeting, triggering a passion to investigate his family lineage. As Tom’s interest in genealogy grows, his life expands and evolves in unexpected directions, as he uncovers a world of unusual stories and characters in the U.K. and the U.S., as well as a growing sense of who he is and who his real family are.

On tonight’s premiere, “The Box,” Tom is bequeathed an old chest of curios; Tom seeks information about a black and white photo in the chest.

To watch this journey into Tom’s family tree begin, tune in to HBO at 10:30/9:30c.

I’ll also be watching Once Upon a Time and Iron Chef America.
