If We Controlled Your Remote… 2/27/14

What a difference a week makes! I already miss the Olympics, and I didn’t even watch a minute of the events or ceremonies. But I loved the way it soothed my over-taxed TiVo! While it’s great to get a lot of new things to watch, it’s also a bit overwhelming—it looks like my weekends are once again going to be dedicated to catching up on the prior 6 days of DVR backlog!

theredroad227smallTonight, Sundance TV kicks off the all-new original drama, The Red Road. When a college student disappears in the New Jersey Mountains, home of the Lenape Mountain Native American tribe, it doesn’t help the already-tense race relations in the area. In charge of the investigation is Sheriff Harold Jensen (Martin Henderson). His wife Jean (Julianne Nicholson, Boardwalk Empire), a recovering alcoholic, is over-protective of the couple’s two girls and doesn’t like the idea of her daughter dating a Native American. Meanwhile, Lenape Tribe member and ex-con Phillip Kopus (Jason Momoa, Game of Thrones) mysteriously returns to town to visit his father Jack (Tom Sizemore), a longtime drug dealer and criminal.

Sundance seems to be firing on all cylinders lately when it comes to these original/imported dramas, so I’m really interested to check out this new series. It’s got a great cast and an interesting premise. Plus, it’s also only 6 episodes, so it’s not a huge time commitment in this increasingly busy TV landscape!

On tonight’s episode, “Arise My Love, Shake Off This Dream,” police officer Harold Jenson tries to balance his increasingly stressful work duties while his home life slips into disarray; a shocking tragedy upends the lives of all involved.

See how the student’s disappearance affects all those involved tonight on Sundance at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, The Millers, The Crazy Ones, Elementary, Grey’s Anatomy, Community, Parks and Recreation, Hollywood Game Night, Parenthood, Chopped Canada, King of the Nerds, Vikings, and Portlandia.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 10/3/13

Help, I’m drowning in new TV! I thought the summer was busy, but now that the fall TV lineup is back in full swing, I don’t know how I’m going to keep up! To help you try to stay afloat in this vast primetime ocean, we’ve got some suggestions on what shows to check out tonight.

welcometothefamilysmallThe new shows keep on coming—tonight, NBC premieres the new comedy, Welcome to the Family. This sitcom explores the culture clash when two very different families are thrown together by an unplanned pregnancy. Latino gym owner Chuey Hernandez (Ricardo Chavira) is proud of his son Junior (Joseph Haro), valedictorian and first of the family to be heading off to college. However, Junior’s promising future may be put on hold when he discovers his secret girlfriend Molly (Ella Rae Peck) is pregnant. Molly’s parents (Mike O’Malley, Mary McCormack) aren’t too thrilled by this either—not that Molly’s really had a promising future to begin with.

I enjoyed tonight’s pilot and look forward to seeing where the series goes. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but still a lot of fun. I liked the two “teenage” leads as well as the rest of the cast—Mike O’Malley is always great, and Ricardo Chavira brings that same humor he brought to Desperate Housewives. However, I didn’t even realize it was In Plain Sight’s Mary McCormack playing the mother until I read a review weeks after I had watched the pilot—she looks so different!

Find out if you like this sweet new comedy tonight on NBC at 8:31/7:31c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, The Millers, The Crazy Ones, Elementary, Grey’s Anatomy, Parks and Recreation, Sean Saves the World, The Michael J. Fox Show, Parenthood, Glee, Childrens Hospital, NTSF:SD:SUV:: and Hot Package.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 10/4/12

I’m excited that I finally got my iPhone 5 yesterday—I gave up on my seemingly useless Best Buy preorder and managed to secure one at the Apple store. With the ample free space and improved camera over my iPhone 4, I should now be all set for the Syfy Digital Press Tour in less than two weeks! Last night, we got a bit of a breather with the presidential debate, but the packed TV schedule returns again tonight. Here’s what we recommend you check out tonight.

Last week, CBS kicked off its own version of the Sherlock story with the premiere of the new series Elementary. This modern-day adaptation takes place in New York City, where the eccentric detective Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) serves as a consultant to the NYPD. When Holmes is released from rehab, his wealthy father hires former surgeon Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) to help ensure he stays sober. Watson assists him in his cases as well as in keeping his life on track.

This is an interesting new take on the iconic detective. I think Holmes’s eccentricity could be toned down a tad, but I really enjoyed Lucy Liu as a female Watson. The chemistry between the actors is great, and I like that they didn’t go the romantic route with Holmes and Watson. This series and its characters are different enough from the UK Sherlock series that I don’t have any issues with there being two “Sherlock” shows on TV right now. I’m looking forward to watching Holmes and Watson solve interesting new mysteries each week.

In tonight’s episode, “While You Were Sleeping,” Holmes investigates the murder of a young man who was shot upon entering his apartment. Meanwhile, Watson meets her ex-boyfriend for dinner.

See if you enjoy this new take on Sherlock Holmes tonight on CBS at 10/9c. Learn where to find episodes online of Elementary @ Clicker.

Tonight, I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, Last Resort, Grey’s Anatomy, 30 Rock, Up All Night, The Office, Parks and Recreation, The X Factor, Glee, Childrens Hospital, and NTSF:SD:SUV::.

Last week, we left off the study group from Community with Shirley, Britta, and Piece plotting against the new Subway shop that was set to invade their college cafeteria. The Subway upped their marketing strategy by getting a man to legally change his name to Subway in order to promote their business. Shirley and Pierce used Britta to try and manipulate Subway – the male – so they could sabatoge the budding cafeteria business. Also, Vice Dean Laybourne (guest star John Goodman) tried to continue his efforts with recruiting Troy to the Air Conditioning repair Annex. Meanwhile, Troy and Abed built competing blanket forts which almost tore their friendship apart.

Tonight, on “Pillows and Blankets,” a disagreement about pillows and blankets transforms into a war on campus, and Jeff tries to negotiate a truce.

Don’t miss a side splitting moment starting at 8/7c on NBC! Learn where to find episodes online of Community @ Clicker.

Tonight, I am also watching 30 Rock, Awake, & the season finale of I Just Want My Pants Back on MTV.
