Kyle’s Choice #1

pitch922smallTonight, FOX kicks off the new drama series Pitch. From a young age, aspiring baseball pitcher Ginny Baker (Kylie Bunbury, Under the Dome) was trained by her father (Michael Beach, Sons of Anarchy), and she eventually made it into the minor leagues. Now her big day has come – she’s been called up by the San Diego Padres, making her the first woman to play Major League Baseball. Suddenly thrown into the limelight, Ginny must prove herself to the fans and her own teammates, especially team captain Mike Lawson (Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Franklin & Bash). The rest of the main characters include team manager Al Luongo (Dan Lauria, The Wonder Years), general manager Oscar Arguella (Mark Consuelos, All My Children), Ginny’s agent/friend Amelia Slater (Ali Larter, Heroes), center fielder/minor league friend Blip Sanders (Mo McRae, Sons of Anarchy), and his wife Evelyn (Meagan Holder, You Again).

I got a chance to see tonight’s pilot during a screening/Q&A with the cast at this summer’s ATX Television Festival. It’s a really entertaining and inspiring story. Since the series is working closely with MLB, they will be using real team names and locations, which adds a nice layer of authenticity to what’s happening in the series. It seems a bit odd that the series starts right as Ginny starts in the majors rather than leading up to this moment over the course of the series. But I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of dramatic stories they plan to tell.

On tonight’s premiere, “Pilot,” a young pitcher adjusts to life in the spotlight after making history as the first woman to play Major League Baseball.

Play catch with Ginny tonight on FOX at 8:59/7:59c.

ncisla222smallOn the last new episode of NCIS: LA, the team paired up with Anna, Arkady’s daughter, after she kidnapped Kirkin (whose flirtation with Deeks was once again freakin’ hysterical) in order to learn her father’s whereabouts. Kirkin didn’t know for sure, but he did give them clues in order to find Arkady. It meant they had to go undercover at a gala so they could hack into the Russian Consul General’s computer. Of course, Kensi and Deeks had to go in as staff – catering, to be precise – while Callen and Anna were a couple and Sam went as their guest. It was dicey (Kensi to the rescue with the signal jammer and Anna and Callen had to do some distraction to keep the guards from seeing Sam as he sneaked into the room), but they accomplished their goal of figuring out in which Arkady was being held.

This is a two-part episode, with the conclusion airing tonight. Sam, Callen, and Anna head to Russia, while Kensi and Deeks stay behind. And tonight, we find (along with Callen) out more about Callen’s history, including a huge secret we’ve all been wondering about for seven seasons! I can’t wait!

On tonight’s episode, “Matryoshka, Part 2,” while they’re in Russia, Callen, Sam and Anna (guest star Bar Paly) craft a plan to break Anna’s father and his CIA agent companion out of prison. In Los Angeles, Kensi and Deeks take Eric into the field on an assignment.

See if they can break Arkady out of prison and how Eric does in the field tonight on CBS at 9:59/8:59c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Kids Baking Championship, Superstore, Cake Wars, Ellen’s Design Challenge, Lucifer, Major Crimes, Scorpion, & Castle.

greatholidaybakingshowsmallI love cooking competition shows – that’s no shocker. One of my favorites is The Great British Baking Show and its various “sister shows.” We’ve seen a version of it in the US already, but tonight is the series premiere of The Great Holiday Baking Show on ABC. Six home bakers will compete in three challenges, with one baker being sent home, each week. The judges for this series are Mary Berry (England’s “Royal Queen of Baking,” author and television personality), who judges the British versions, and James Beard Award-Winning pastry chef and author, Johnny Iuzzini. And hosting this series are husband and wife duo Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) & Ian Gomez (Cougar Town).

I’ve seen the premiere, and I gotta say I love all the hosts and judges. I adore Nia and Ian, who I’ve enjoyed watching on a few episodes of Celebrity Name Game), and Mary and Johnny are fun judges. As always, this is going to be a fun four weeks of great baking!

On tonight’s episode, “Cookie Week,” the bakers compete in three challenges: Signature Bake, showcasing their family recipes as they create two sets of Christmas cookies that are both delicious and unique; Technical Bake, a surprise recipe where they must demonstrate precision and technique; and finally, the Showstopper Bake, where the bakers are asked to create elaborate flavorful gingerbread houses.

See the fun and flavorful cookies the bakers bake tonight on ABC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Guy’s Grocery Games, Cake Wars, Major Crimes, Guilty Pleasures, Superstore, & Top 5 Restaurants.
