If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/3/14

It’s finally getting warmer, and pretty much all of the snow is gone here. Could it finally be…(gasp)…spring?! The mid-season TV programming is already in full swing—it seems like as soon as one show finishes, two more spring up to take its place. There is no rest for the weary for die-hard TV viewers, and to help you decide what to check out tonight, we’ve got some suggestions.

Kyle’s Choice

community43smallCommunity is always hit or miss for me—when it’s good, it’s really good and clever, but when it’s bad, it can be practically unwatchable, especially if it is a parody of something really obscure or just goes completely off-the-rails and crazy. The last few episodes have actually been quite entertaining. While I have never actually played Dungeons & Dragons, I was still able to enjoy the humor of last week’s episode, which found Professor Hickey reconnecting with his estranged son (guest-star David Cross) while competing in a game of D&D. The previous week’s episode also featured a fun game competition where Abed and Annie played a 1990s VCR game (starring Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan as a gold prospector) in order to determine who got to choose their new roommate.

However, even when the episodes don’t necessarily work for me, I like that this show never plays it safe and always stretches its creativity. So with the show currently on a roll (at least for me), I was really excited when I saw the ads for this week’s episode, which looks like the a parody of the 1980s G.I. Joe cartoon. I can’t wait to see where they go with this premise, but knowing the premise is only half the battle!

On tonight’s episode, “G.I. Jeff,” the study group embarks on an animated adventure inspired by “G.I. Joe.”

Check out the action tonight on NBC at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, The Millers, The Crazy Ones, Elementary, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Grey’s Anatomy, Parks and Recreation, Hollywood Game Night, Parenthood, Surviving Jack, Suits, and Sirens.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 3/27/14

We’re finally past hump day—this has been a crazy-busy work week, and my TiVo has been struggling to keep itself under 100% full! I am anxiously awaiting the weekend so I can catch up on all of this week’s TV shows. But until then, primetime goes on, and we’ve got a couple of suggestions on what you should check out tonight.

Kyle’s Choice

survivingjack327smallTonight, FOX premieres the new comedy, Surviving Jack, starring Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: SVU) as Jack Dunlevy, a tough, ex-military, no-nonsense oncologist who has decided to take a more active role in raising his teenagers so his wife Joanne (Rachael Harris) can attend law school. Set in the fall of 1991, Jack’s son Frankie (Connor Buckley) is just starting his freshman year in high school, while daughter Rachel (Claudia Lee) is heading into her junior year. Jack had always taken a back-seat role when it came to parenting his children, but now he’s in charge and is determined to be the father his kids always wished they had. (Though they may have a change of opinion soon.) In addition to his own children, Jack finds himself looking out for his son’s two best fiends, George (Kevin Hernandez) and Mikey (Tyler Foden), as well.

I got to preview the first two episodes of the series, and I really enjoyed it. The 90s setting is a lot of fun, as I was a similar age to the son at the time and remember all the music and clothing styles used on show. Christopher Meloni is hilarious in the title role—he not only delivers on the humor, but also the heart. I love his no-nonsense attitude and the humor that goes with that. The relationship between him and his children (and his son’s friends) is great. I really enjoy how Jack will speak exactly what’s on his mind, no matter how politically incorrect, but never in a hurtful way.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” Jack Dunlevy goes from emotionally distant working father to taking a more active role in the lives of his two teenage kids when his wife, Joanne, goes back to law school in the series premiere of this comedy set in the 1990s.

Check out Christopher Meloni in a great comedic role tonight on FOX at 9:30/8:30c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Grey’s Anatomy, Parenthood, Hell’s Kitchen, Inside the Actors Studio, Suits, Sirens, Vikings, and Review.

Our Thoughts on the FOX 2013-14 Pilot Trailers

Megan, Kyle, & I have been giving our opinions on the trailers for the new fall shows. You can check out the ones we’ve already posted: ABC, CBS, & NBC. Now, we’re here to give you our opinions on the FOX shows, starting with the dramas.

Almost Human

  • Jenny: I am already in love with J.J. Abrams’ new show. It’s a cop show mixed with sci-fi, and although the lead is definitely flawed, it doesn’t look like he’s a bad guy, really. So I absolutely can’t wait to watch the pilot. (In fact, I’m getting ready to watch it not long after I type this up. 😉 ) – Excited.
  • Megan: I am pretty interested in this one. It reminds me of the Will Smith movie, I, Robot. There are going to be a lot of hurdles to make this series worth watching, but if anyone can do it, J.J. Abrams can. – Excited.
  • Kyle: I would normally really enjoy this type of film, but not I’m sure if this will be that interesting as a weekly series. The whole robot that looks completely human seems like a bit of a cop-out to make it easier to produce. – Curious.

TV News – 9/10/2013

usandthemsmallLife is always so busy, but when I get a moment, there’s no where else I’d rather be than here, updating you on TV news. (Okay, maybe I’d rather be in Hawaii with Alex O’Loughlin, but this is definitely a close second). Let’s take a peek at what’s happening.

FOX has picked up five new comedies for the 2013-2014 season, a couple of which I am quite excited about. Jason Ritter (Parenthood) and Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls) are teaming up in Us and Them (formerly known as Friends and Family). The romantic comedy is based on the British series, Gavin and Stacey. This could be the next big hit comedy for FOX, because the two of these actors are brilliant apart, but together, they will be a force to be reckoned with.
