If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/23/19

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, The Magicians returns for its fourth season on Syfy. In the third season, magic had gone away, and everyone lost their powers…except for Julia. The group went on an epic quest to obtain the seven keys and made their way to Blackspire Castle in hopes of restoring magic. Alice was afraid of what she would become when magic returned, so when the group was about to restore magic, she turned on them and destroyed the keys and any hopes of restoring magic. However, Julia was able to use her powers to bind Alice and recreate the keys.

Just as they were about to restore magic, Dean Fogg, Irene, and the Order showed up to stop them – the dean had been working with the library all this time! The library attached a siphon so they could control the flow of magic. Instead of killing the students, Irene used Fogg’s mind-wiping potion on them. As we jump ahead, classes have resumed, magic is being rationed by the library, and Alice (whose mind wasn’t wiped) has been locked up. The rest of the group has no idea who they are or that they have powers. They all have new personalities and professions. However, Eliot does seem to know who he and Quentin are, and we discovered that the monster from the castle has escaped and has taken over Eliot’s body.

Tonight we pick up right where we left off, in a strange new world with lots of “new” characters. Will our group ever get their memories restored and figure out who they really are? How will Alice, the only one with her memories intact, play a role in that? What does this monster inside Eliot want? Do Irene and the Order have a larger plan now that they control magic, and how do Fogg and Brakebills fit into that? It looks like we have another crazy and exciting season ahead, where anything could happen!

On tonight’s premiere, “A Flock of Lost Birds,” Brian takes a friend out for ice cream; Sam is one week away from retirement.

Tonight, Syfy officially launches the new series Deadly Class, which is based on Rick Remender’s hit comic book series of the same name. Set in the 1980s, the series follows Marcus (Benjamin Wadsworth, Teen Wolf), who was orphaned as a young boy when his parents were killed by a person with mental issues. He blames Ronald Reagan and his budget cuts for his parents’ untimely death. Marcus was sent to a boys’ home, where the living conditions were horrible. He literally burned the place to the ground when he left, killing dozens of children. Now he lives on the street, eating out of trash cans and avoiding the cops. One day Marcus is approached by a group of teenagers, who abduct him and bring him to see Master Lin (Benedict Wong, Doctor Strange, Marco Polo). Master Lin tells him about King’s Dominion, a secret school for assassins, founded by his grandfather, where Marcus could learn to harness his hate and master the deadly arts.

And so Marcus now finds himself in this strange and deadly new world, taking classes like AP Black Arts, Hand-to-Hand Combat, and Poison Lab. He learns of the various gangs and cliques on campus and meets some of his fellow students – the mysterious Saya (Lana Condor, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before), who has goals of being valedictorian and is the person Master Lin sent to close the deal with Marcus; the unstable and wild Maria (Maria Gabriela de Faria, Yo Soy Franky), who causes Marcus to be the target of the cartel on his first day of class; skater punk misfit Billy (Liam James, The Way, Way Back, Psych), the son of a corrupt cop; and would-be gangster Willie (Luke Tennie, Vengeance), whose L.A. gang leader mother sent him to the school to toughen him up.

I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere, which sets up this elaborate and interesting world that feels both fresh but also familiar in some ways – King’s Dominion is like Hogwarts or Brakebills but for assassins rather than magicians. The episode also introduces viewers to a wide variety of characters, each with a unique background and reason for being at the school. The series has a bit of a darker, more mature tone, as it explores the angst of high school – just at a very unusual and more deadly one than most of us attended. The 1980s setting works well for the series, as these students live in a world that isn’t flooded with social media and phone cameras to catch them doing their homework assignments—the first of which involves finding and killing someone who deserves it! Plus there’s a lot of great 80s rock/punk music in the show’s soundtrack. This show looks and feels like a feature film, and I can’t wait to see where this story goes next and what lies ahead for these characters.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 12/2/18

Tonight, Syfy launches the new sci-fi psychological thriller Nightflyers, which is based off the 1980 novella by Game of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin. The series is set in the year 2093 and follows the crew of The Nightflyer, a colonizing ship that is on a mission to make first contact with an alien race known as the Volcryn in order to learn valuable information to save a dying Earth. The ship’s captain is the enigmatic Roy Eris (David Ajala, Falling Water), who stays confined to his quarters, only interacting with the others via a hologram. Leading the expedition is professor Karl D’Branin (Eoin Macken, The Night Shift), who left his wife and daughter behind to participate in the 2-year mission. Joining him is psychiatrist Dr. Agatha Matheson (Gretchen Mol, Boardwalk Empire), who has brought an L-1 telepath on board to help communicate with the aliens. Members of the crew consider Thale (Sam Strike, EastEnders) to be a monster – his ability to get into people’s minds and play with their thoughts and visions is dangerous and deadly, and they don’t trust him. The crew also includes the captain’s right-hand man Auggie (Brían F. O’Byrne, Manhunt: Unabomber), xenobiologist Rowan (Angus Sampson, Shut Eye), mission specialist Melantha Jhirl (Jodie Turner-Smith, The Last Ship), and mechanic Lommie (Maya Eshet, Teen Wolf), who has the ability to talk to the ship via a neural implant.

As the series opens, we flash forward to some horrific events resembling The Shining in space. Then we jump back to the “present” and the start of the mission. However, it isn’t long before things on the ship start to malfunction, deadly things start to happen, and the suspicion and distrust starts to spread. While the crew is quick to point the finger at Thale, Karl and Agatha try to find out what’s really happening. But this is just the beginning of the horrors that are to come – and there’s nowhere to run or hide in space! Syfy made the first two episodes of the series available early via On Demand. I wasn’t as immediately sucked into this show like I was when I checked out the first episode of YouTube’s similar series Origin. I hope that we get a little more backstory on these characters over the course of the season, but the central mystery of what’s really going on on the ship is certainly enough to keep me initially interested in checking out more of this series. Things look like they are going to get really creepy, and if Game of Thrones is any indicator, we probably shouldn’t get too attached to any of these characters!

Syfy will be rolling out the season very rapidly, with episodes 1-5 debuting Sunday, December 2 through Thursday, December 6 at 10/9c, and episodes 6-10 on Sunday, December 9 through Thursday, December 13 at 10/9c with limited commercial interruption across all platforms. Weekend marathons will give fans an additional opportunity to catch up on the series. In addition, it sounds like all 10 episodes will be made available for streaming in parallel with tonight’s premiere.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 7/27/18

Early this morning, Netflix released all of the episodes of the sixth season of Orange is the New Black. Last season, the series took a unique approach, with the entire season taking place over the course of just 3 days, as the Litchfield inmates rioted for better living conditions after the accidental death of inmate/friend Poussey. After days of trying to negotiate with the prisoners, CERT sent in a tactical team to squelch the uprising. Meanwhile, Red tried to lure former CO Piscatella into a trap to get her revenge. However, he discovered what she was up to and entered the prison on his own, where he held Alex, Piper, Red, and some others hostage. The women eventually managed to turn the tables on Piscatella, but the CERT team found Freida’s hidden bunker just as he was trying to leave, and they shot him, thinking he was an armed assailant in the haze of the smoke bombs they had released.

During the riot, Maritza and Flaca had bonded making their YouTube prison-style videos. However, they were upset to discover that all of the Litchfield inmates were being gathered onto buses to be redistributed to other prisons while the riot aftermath was cleaned up…and the two of them had been placed on different buses. Meanwhile, Leanne and Angie set fire to all of the prisoner records; Lorna discovered she was pregnant, and her boyfriend professed his love; and Pennsatucky managed to escape from prison and made her way to the home of her CO boyfriend. Back in the bunker, Red, Freida, the newly-engaged Piper and Alex, and some other inmates locked arms, bracing themselves for the unknown as the CERT team entered the room with guns locked and loaded.

I’m looking forward to seeing where things open in the new season and how this affects the main characters we have followed for five seasons. Will our group be separated from one another? Is Litchfield no more? Will we jump ahead to after things have been cleaned up from the riots? Or have the women been sent to a new prison/prisons, and if so, how will the environment/character dynamics be different?

If We Controlled Your Remote… 6/15/18

Phoebe’s Choice

Syfy debuts season 4 of 12 Monkeys tonight, and you better hold on to your era-appropriate hats because it’ll all be over in three weeks. Talking time is always confusing with this show that revolves around time travel and a war to constantly nudge history by two opposing sides: the Army of the Twelve Monkeys and the inventor of the time travel machine: Dr. Katarina Jones. But this year they will be dropping 3 episodes at a time, over three weekends, as they continue to experiment with tight summer schedules. This show has been brilliant from the jump and is easily the best reboot this side of Karate Kid Cobra Kai.

Last year’s finale opened with two young children ghost hunting in a haunted mausoleum, where they found Jennifer Goines. Jennifer was waiting for a dying man. Far in the past in 1881, Cole and Cassie finally caught up to the timespace that their son Athan was in before he chose to go back to the future and assume his destiny as the foretold Witness. All three were wearing those neato time travel jackets, and a cat and mouse chase across time ended with all three of them stranded in “the house” in 1959 – the paradoxical point outside of timespace where he was conceived, which should no longer exist because of changes to the fabric of reality.

In the 2140s, Jones had 12 Monkeys lieutenant Olivia imbibe the magic tea leaves from the red forest to enter a vision state to figure where in time they were. She was determined to stop the Witness. He told her his location, knowing the Army would come for him if they knew where he was. As Olivia came out of the vision, the Witness revealed itself to her, unmasking and showing their true identity. Aided by her daughter and the remnants of the Daughters an old form of Jennifer once led, Jones surrounded Cole, Cassie, & Athan, threatening them at gun point. She wryly pointed out in one of the best lines of the season, “What happens next, happens last.”

During that standoff, a lightning storm erupted, announcing the arrival of time-traveling city from the year 3000 and home base to the Army of the 12 Monkeys: Titan. Inside the house, we got a Mexican standoff: two moms, one dad, a son, and a daughter all pointing guns at each other. Athan got shot in the chest, but the time travel jacket got him out before he had time to die. In the temple of the Monkeys, Olivia killed the Pallid man, thusly ascending to the highest rank in their hierarchy. We were then shown how “recently” she had escaped holding in Jones’s compound and killed Deacon in the process. She was told by Jones, “The Witness is dead,” as she’d just shot Athan. After a moment of shitty diatribe, Olivia stabbed (killed?) Jones.

Jennifer finally got the dying man she was waiting for when Athan arrived in her mausoleum. She nursed him back to health, and he returned to rescue Cole & Cassie, only to be slashed by Olivia. After, he revealed she was always meant to be the one behind the mask, the true Witness. After that, all of the “good guys” time ported out. We ended the season with Cole as a child in 2015. A slip of paper with the iconic image of an ouroboros drawn on it, (a snake in a circle eating its own tail). Cole’s father mentioned Cole’s mother.

I can’t wait to see where this season goes, and we won’t have to wait long to see. I know they are daring to go even further in the past than last season’s use of Victorian England. And Jennifer is going to make some huge changes and impacts based on an interview I read recently. Just gotta get me one of them nifty time travel jackets, and I’ll be set.

On tonight’s first episode, “The End,” the final conflict with the Army of the 12 Monkeys begins when the Witness returns to Project Splinter. Then on the second episode, “Ouroboros,” Travelers come face to face with ghosts from their past when they find themselves maneuvering around their own timelines. Finally, on the third episode, “45 RPM,” Cassie travels back in time to confront a younger Olivia while Cole helps Jennifer find the meaning behind her final Primary vision.
