beyondborderssmallTonight is the series premiere of the newest Criminal Minds spinoff, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. This specialized International Division of the FBI is responsible for solving crimes and rescuing Americans who find themselves in danger while overseas. Heading the International Response Team is Unit Chief Jack Garrett (Gary Sinise, CSI: NY), a 20-year veteran of the Bureau. His team includes Clara Seger (Alana De La Garza, Forever, Law & Order), a smart, well-traveled, and multi-lingual cultural anthropologist; Matthew Simmons (Daniel Henney, Three Rivers), a former military hero with split-second profiling skills he honed on the battlefield; Russ “Monty” Montgomery (Tyler James Williams, Everybody Hates Chris), the unit’s compassionate, brilliant tech analyst who additionally liaises stateside with the families of those in trouble while his group is far from home; and Mae Jarvis (Annie Funke), the team’s fearless and fun medical examiner.

I’ve seen the first two episodes, and I think if you’re a fan of the original, you’ll really enjoy the spinoff. Even if you aren’t, I think you should give it a shot. The team has a lot of the same type of chemistry as the original, with a lot of fun personalities. And come on! It’s Gary Sinise! He’s great, of course, but I also REALLY loved the others. Henney’s Simmons and Funke’s Jarvis have a fun relationship, with hints of Morgan and Garcia, but not a romance, because Simmons is happily married with kids. And Monty is a great counterpart for Garcia, although not quite as eccentric. But there’s the difference of being in really cool locations overseas, and the cases are a bit different, as well.

On tonight’s episode, “The Harmful One,” Unit Chief Jack Garrett and his International Response Team (IRT) travel to Thailand when three American volunteers go missing during a trek to Bangkok. They reconnect with former colleague Clara Seger, who helps them rush to gather evidence leading to the UnSub before a storm threatens to wash it away.

Meet the new team tonight on CBS at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Rosewood, The Goldbergs, Hell’s Kitchen, Modern Family, Property Brothers, Wahlburgers, black-ish, & Donnie Loves Jenny.

theamericans422smallTonight, another season of The Americans comes to a close. Last week was another amazing episode. Philip was about to visit Martha when he got word that it wasn’t safe — and it turned out that Stan was there, on his own rogue mission to learn the truth about the bugged pen in the office. After Beeman left, Martha called her parents in tears and arranged to visit them. When “Clark” showed up at the house, Martha was packing, saying that she was tired of the lies and had to leave. Philip then pulled off his wig, revealing his true self as Martha looked on in horror. Meanwhile, Paige was once again acting out and questioning everything about her parents, so Elizabeth asked Paige if she wanted to join her to visit her dying mother in Russia.

That was a close call with Beeman in Martha’s apartment — he could have seen the wedding photo, or Philip could have walked in. Is this the end for Martha? Why would Philip reveal himself unless he is going to kill her? And did she already have a sense this was coming? Her phone call to her parents felt very much like a goodbye. And what about Paige — will she take her mother up on the offer to meet her grandmother? Is this the first step in Paige joining the family business? And will Stan come any closer to learning the truth about the Jennings family?! This has been such a great season, and I can’t wait to see how it comes to an end tonight!

On tonight’s episode, “March 8, 1983,” Stan’s plan to save Nina has unpredictable consequences; Elizabeth and Paige go on a trip; and Philip finds an unlikely ally after an emotionally charged mission.

See how the season ends tonight on FX at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching Survivor, Criminal Minds, The Middle, The Goldbergs, Modern Family, black-ish, Arrow, Supernatural, Young & Hungry, Broadchurch, and Big Time in Hollywood, FL.

criminalminds48smallIt’s been a couple of weeks since the last new Criminal Minds (and how good was that? I totally called the mother being a creepazoid!), and I’m so excited for tonight’s episode, I can’t even explain it. I know a lot of people are tired of spin-offs, but give me a spin-off of my favorite procedurals, and I’ll for it. So tonight is the planted pilot, for lack of a better phrase, for Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. The cast is fantastic for the new show: Gary Sinise (best known for his role on CSI: NY and as Lieutenant Dan on Forrest Gump) plays Jack Garrett, basically the Rossi of the group—he’s a 20-year veteran of the BAU; Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad) plays Lily Lambert, an international law expert; Daniel Henney (who starred in Three Rivers and guest starred a few times on Hawaii Five-0) is Special Agent Matthew Simmons, who is the “Morgan” of the group, kicking ass and taking names; and Tyler James Williams (probably best known for the role of Chris in Everybody Hates Chris, but he also guest starred in a handful of episodes of The Walking Dead more recently) plays the new team’s “Garcia,” tech guru Russ “Monty” Montgomery, who surprises Garcia with some of his additional responsibilities.

I think the show runners have learned their lesson after the failure of the first spin-off. This team is very much like the original BAU group, in that they work out of the FBI, unlike how Suspect Behavior worked out of a karate studio or old gym or whatever it was, and the team really echoes our FBI faves. So I have my fingers crossed that this plated pilot works well, because I really want Gary Sinise back on my screen every week!

On tonight’s episode, “Beyond Borders,” when a family of four is abducted while on vacation in Barbados, the BAU is called to assist Unit Chief Jack Garrett and his International Unit on their investigation. Garrett and his unit, the FBI’s top division for handling cases involving Americans abroad, work jointly with Hotch and his team when they discover that this case matches one the BAU investigated last year in Florida. Tom Everett Scott and Bonnie Somerville guest star as Greg and Colleen Sullivan, two members of the kidnapped family.

Meet the new team tonight on CBS at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Young & Hungry, The Goldbergs, Law & Order: SVU, Mystery Diners, black-ish, Chicago PD, CSI: Cyber, Hot in Cleveland, & The Soul Man.

chicagopd41smallWhen Chicago PD first started, I was worried I wouldn’t like it because I remember Voight as being nothing but a corrupt…jerk (to put it politely) after he had the to-do with Casey on Chicago Fire. But he quickly grew on me. Does he still lean toward doing things on the wrong side of the line? Yeah, a lot of the time. But we’ve only seen him use his powers for good, which has been great. Last week, we saw him kidnap a diplomat from Argentina in order to help find out who murdered a young woman Ruzek had befriended while undercover with a protest group. I felt really bad for Ruzek, who took her death really hard because he knew she was a sweet girl who’d gotten mixed up in bad stuff. I loved how he finally leaned on Burgess for comfort. And finally, we met Halstead’s doctor brother, who came to Chicago for a seemingly innocent visit, but Halstead already knows (as do we) that there is some other reason for him to be here…

I have a feeling it’s going to be a hard episode tonight, as it’s going to pit Halstead (who is a true stand-up guy) against Voight when Voight crosses that line once more (but again, I think it’ll be for a good cause. Not saying that’ll excuse it. Just that it isn’t for his own gain.), and that scares me because I like Voight, but I LOVE Halstead. *sigh*

On tonight’s episode, “Get Back to Even,” Intelligence responds to a drug robbery gone wrong, and in their investigation, it’s revealed that the first person Voight ever gave his card to is linked to a double murder. Voight will fight to keep her family safe. At the same time, we learn the real reason why Halstead’s brother Will (guest star Nick Gehlfuss) came to Chicago. Meanwhile Desk Sgt. Platt takes care of a young girl at district.

Find out why Will is there and what tension there’s going to be with Voight tonight on NBC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing The Mysteries of Laura, Young & Hungry, The Goldbergs, Law & Order: SVU, Modern Family, Mystery Diners, black-ish, Best New Restaurant, Hot in Cleveland, & The Soul Man.

thementalist128smallI’m enjoying the final season of The Mentalist. It’s really nice seeing Jane & Lisbon in a real relationship. He’s struggling with his need to keep her safe, and last week was a prime example of that. When the team set up a sting to catch a killer who was going after a protected witness — and trying to get said witness to the courthouse — Jane basically sent Lisbon on a wild goose chase in order to get her out of the line of fire. She figured it out and was upset with him. I did love that he made no bones about the fact that he would do it again. We’ll just have to see if it blows up in his face…

One of the ongoing stories for this season has been Abbott’s old boss and the secret he has over Abbott. When they were working an operation against a drug cartel, Abbott saw one of the bad guys he’d been surveilling, and rather than let him go to potentially hold up a bus and kill everyone on it as the cartel had been doing, he took it into his own hands and killed the man. Abbott’s boss figured it out, and now that Abbott’s wife is up for a position in Washington, he’s holding it over Abbott’s head to get him to do stuff for him or he’ll let the story come out. Now, that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, as he’d be in big trouble for not coming forward sooner, but okay. Jane figured out something was going on and got the story out of Abbott a few weeks ago. He’s already made one play against the guy, but it comes to a head this week.

On tonight’s episode, “Copper Bullet,” when Abbott’s old boss, Agent Peterson, threatens Abbott’s career — and possibly his freedom — Jane devises a risky plan to protect his friend’s future. Dylan Baker, M.C. Gainey, & more guest star.

See if Jane can take down Agent Peterson tonight on CBS at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Melissa & Joey, Criminal Minds, Top Chef, Best New Restaurant, Hot in Cleveland, Wahlburgers, Donnie Loves Jenny, & The Exes.
