If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/20/19

Phoebe’s Choice

This past season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow could easily have been re-branded as Sarah Lance and the Spooky Kids, considering the show’s hard shift into matters of mystical origins. After season three (in which we saw Damian Darhk make his third run at being an Arrowverse Big Bad), this show is now nothing but time anomalies of a magical nature. For example, the penultimate episode of season four last week saw John Constantine was on a quest to hell to save Ray. Neron, the evil demon possessing Ray’s body, was using the Ray Palmer identity to promote this new phone app that will track mystical creatures. The Fairy Godmother, Tabitha, was loose too, attached to geeky Time Bureau intern Gary.

Nora Dahrk was on the scene and trying to stop Neron, but she was outmatched. With constant prodding from Tabitha, Gary finally started to get mean to the Legends. He was really just serving as a spoiler that distracted the team as Neron attempted to fake a monster attack to get his app better promotion. As it turned out, the silver lining for him was that the TOS of the app signed over the users’ souls to him. If he could get his app to go viral, he’d ascend to a position of dominance in hell.

Speaking of, Constantine finally got through to the Triumvirate, a trio of demons that oversaw much of hell together. They tortured him with the reminder that an innocent girl named Astrid remained in hell due to his past failures. Failing in all other attempts to stop Neron, Nora agreed to take Tabitha’s curse, thinking her wish-granting powers would allow her to rescue John & Ray from hell. But, no, in assuming the curse, she also assumed the charge: Gary. Constantine failed in his attempt to rescue Astrid. She’d been corrupted by hell and chose to remain there despite Constantine’s bargain to have her released. But perhaps we’re saved, because Gary did dispatch Fairy Godmother Nora Dahrk to hell to save her friends. Last but not least, the dragon egg that was hidden at young Zari’s house began to hatch, foreshadowing perhaps this year’s Beebo will be a baby dragon that whups serious ass!

On tonight’s episode, “Hey, World!” while on a mission to find Ray, Constantine and Nora discover Neron’s evil plan. Nate convinces the Legends to think outside the box and suggests a dangerous plan to unite magical creatures and people to save the world.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/19/19

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, the Game of Thrones series finale airs on HBO. Last week we lost several of the show’s main characters. Daenerys questioned Jon’s and Tyrion’s loyalty for sharing the information about Jon’s true lineage with others. Tyrion revealed that Varys was plotting against the queen, so she had him executed. Before the battle for Kings Landing began, Tyrion begged Daenerys to call off her attack if the people of King’s Landing rang the bell of surrender, and she reluctantly agreed. The next morning, the attack was executed flawlessly, and Daenerys used the blinding sun to take out the Iron Fleet and blow open the city gates. Meanwhile, Jon led the attack on the ground with what remained of the Unsullied and Dothraki armies. The Golden Company was on the run. They dropped their weapons, and the bells signaling surrender were rung. However, Daenerys saw the city that used to belong to her family and decided to burn Kings Landing to the ground, sentencing hundreds of thousands of incident civilians to a fiery death. When Grey Worm saw Daenerys burning the city, he took this as an opportunity to get revenge for Missandei’s execution and spurred on a riot on the ground, causing the army to start massacring and assaulting the unarmed soldiers and civilians. Jon just looked on in horror.

Meanwhile, Arya and The Hound made their way to the city, each with a different target. The Hound wanted to kill his brother, while Arya was after Cersei. However, The Hound convinced Arya that her suicide mission was not worth it, so she decided to head back but hit obstacle after obstacle as the city crashed and burned. Elsewhere, the big showdown between The Hound and The Mountain ultimately resulted in both of them falling to a fiery death. Jaime had also made his way to the city, looking for Cersei. After being severely wounded in a fight with Euron on the shore, he stumbled up to the Red Keep, where he was reunited with his one true love/twin sister. However, as the pair tried to escape, they were trapped and crushed by falling rubble in the caverns below the city.

So how will this all end tonight? Daenerys has become the spitting image of her father, the Mad King. Tyrion and Jon must now realize that she is not the right person to sit on the throne, and something must be done to stop her. However, she still has her army and a fire-breathing dragon. What army does Jon have behind him? Will the Wildlings return to help Jon? Will Jon defeat Daenerys and claim the throne under his real name? Or else who will ultimately sit atop the throne? I can’t wait to see how this all ends tonight!

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/14/19

Jenny’s Choice

Last week’s FBI hit way too close to home for Maggie in a couple of different ways. First up was the victim of the case-of-the-week, another FBI agent who was also married to an FBI agent. Maggie had been at Quantico with the victim’s wife, so she was friends with the couple. So his murder hit her hard, and she knew how his widow was feeling, since her husband had also been killed. But during the case, in which they figured out the lawyer killed him and a gang member and caught the gang leader who in turn killed the lawyer, they also figured out that the victim had been cheating on his wife. Only, when Maggie finally told her at the end, it turned out she already knew. That’s when Maggie learned from Kristen that Maggie’s husband had been exchanging late-night phone calls with a woman before his death. Kristen couldn’t tell her if those calls were business or personal, but we know that Kristen told OA that there didn’t seem to be any business reason for him to have called her. Right at the end, we saw Maggie go to the woman’s work and ask to see her. What we don’t know is what Maggie learned. I don’t know if we’ll find that out in tonight’s season finale or if we’ll just be left to speculate. Given the episode description, I think we’ll find out… Either way, it’s been a fun first season, and I can’t wait for season two already.

On tonight’s episode, “Closure,” a woman with information about the death of Maggie’s husband is abducted leading the team to uncover a criminal operation larger than anyone imagined. Also, Dana puts her career in jeopardy by standing by and allowing Maggie to work on the case, which has such a personal connection to her.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/12/19

Jenny’s Choice #1

My first pick tonight is the new episode of NCIS: LA. Last week, Callen got news on Anna’s whereabouts from Joelle of all people, and they, along with Sam, Kensi, & Deeks, traveled to Cuba. Anna was apparently working with Joelle to find and take down Volkoff, who also had Callen’s father. Anna, Joelle, and Callen ended up being held by Volkoff, and at first it seemed like Anna and Joelle were killed by him right in front of Callen, but that turned out to be faked by Volkoff. In the end, Anna was shot but was going to be okay. She couldn’t return to the States, though, because even though the CIA & Joelle would clear her name, her face would still be known everywhere. So she went with Joelle and would continue working with her. Callen’s father was shot as well, and though he lived long enough to get back to LA and see both his daughter and grandson, as well as visit the grave of his other daughter who died when she was a child, he ended up dying from an infection. It was a little heartbreaking, watching Callen put the coin on his father’s headstone, but at least they all had a chance to see one another and say goodbye. And finally, a more fitting end couldn’t have come for a better person. Volkoff, who was shot after setting off chlorine gas in the bunker they were all in, which our guys barely escaped from, ended up being trapped in the bunker and dying from the gas.

I’m so excited about tonight’s episode (and next week’s finale) because we’ve got a huge JAG reunion. If you didn’t watch the show when it was originally on, it starred David James Elliott as Harmon “Harm” Rabb Jr., a former pilot turned lawyer who was now working for the military’s Judge Advocate General (ergo: JAG) division. Catherine Bell played alongside him as Lt. Col. Sarah Mackenzie. It started off on NBC, which canceled it after a single season, and then moved to CBS, where it aired for nine more seasons…and saw the spinoff of NCIS, which of course led to all the spinoffs after. Bet NBC is kicking themselves now, aren’t they? LOL Tonight’s episode will feature David James Elliott back as Harm, while Catherine Bell will return in next week’s finale.

On tonight’s episode, “The Guardian,” Callen and Sam travel to the USS Allegiance in the Persian Gulf to work with Navy Captain Harmon “Harm” Rabb, Jr. (David James Elliott)
when the NCIS team uncovers ISIS sympathizers who are targeting military locations. Mercedes Mason returns as DEA Agent Talia Del Campo.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/2/19

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, the fifth and final season of iZombie kicks off on The CW. Last season, the secret about zombies came out, and New Seattle was born – a sectioned off part of the city that kept the zombie population separate from the humans. A woman known as Renegade was smuggling terminally ill people across the border in order to save them by turning them into zombies. When she died, Liv took over the role. As the season came to a close, this was discovered, and Chase, the CEO of Fillmore Graves, called for her public execution. The rest of the gang – Clive, Ravi, Peyton, and Major – teamed up with the remaining crew of the Underground Railroad to help save Liv. As Peyton rallied protesters via TV, Major hulked out and stormed the warehouse where Liv was being held. In the commotion, Liv killed Chase, smashing his head with an anvil.

Meanwhile, Blaine and Brother Love decided to take advantage of the execution distraction and organized their followers to break out of New Seattle to spread the zombie virus. However, soldiers were waiting for them on the other side of the wall and killed Brother Love and his devotees. Fortunately for his son, Blaine had played it safe, watching his father’s attempt at an exodus from a distance. With Chase dead, Major took over the position as head of Fillmore Graves, telling Liv that the company would no longer block the Underground Railroad and their only enemy was the US Army. He also offered Blaine and Don-E a proposition – they could be the good guys for once and help smuggle brains into New Seattle now that the government had cut off their supply.

Finally, Ravi offered Liv a brain that would turn her human again. However, she turned it down, giving it to Dale, who had just married Clive in a surprise wedding at the police precinct. So things ended on a positive note, but will this continue with everyone working on the same side for once, or will Blaine find some scheme to benefit himself? Will Ravi finally find a cure for the zombies virus before the season is over? And will Liv and Major finally get their happy ending?

On tonight’s premiere, “Thug Death,” while investigating a murder case in which there is no body or brain to eat, the only evidence Liv and Clive have to work with is a grainy video and a little bit of blood found at the crime scene; Blaine is up to his old tricks.
