If We Controlled Your Remote… 10/20/14

I love that we’re to Monday, which is my favorite day of the week for TV right now. There’s so much great TV on that I can’t help but smile. Kyle’s away for the Syfy press event, but Megan & I are here to share our picks, so check them out.

Jenny’s Choice #1

themiller1020smallTonight is the season premiere of one of my favorite new comedies last season, The Millers. In case you didn’t watch last year, here’s what you missed: Nathan was married and didn’t tell his parents he got divorced. When his parents came to visit, his happiness being away from his wife prompted his parents to get their own divorce. His overbearing mother moved in with Nathan while his quiet father moved in with Nathan’s sister and her family.

It’s really a cute show with lots of laughs, and I’m so glad it’s back. And this season, Sean Hayes has joined the cast, so that’ll be an interesting addition.

On tonight’s episode, “Movin’ Out (Carol’s Song),” Carol begins her search for a new apartment, causing Nathan and Debbie to race each other to find her a place that is the farthest away from each of them. During the course of her house-hunting, Carol meets and develops an instant bond with Kip Finkle (Hayes), her new best friend.

See how Carol and Kip meet tonight on CBS at 8:30/7:30c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/1/14

The cable Upfronts have begun, and we are already starting to get flooded with announcements of lots of great new shows for which I have no idea how I’m going to find the time to watch. However, the broadcast networks will soon be making their late-afternoon announcements as to which shows have met their doom (FOX just said that Almost Human won’t be returning). There are some show cancellations that would actually do me a favor, as I have a really hard time quitting shows on my own, but there are also some fun comedies that are in trouble that I really hope get picked up! Speaking of comedies, we’ve got a fun trio of recommendations for you to check out tonight.

reviewsmallTonight, the first season of the hilarious Comedy Central series Review comes to a close. Over the course of the season, we’ve seen critic Forrest MacNeil pretty much destroy his life while reviewing real-life experiences chosen by his viewers. The many crazy things he has done in the name of his job have included stealing, becoming a racist, making a sex tape, divorcing his wife, and even getting married again (which didn’t last very long). Last week, his attempt to review being the life of the party caused Forrest to reconnect with his son. Could this be a glimmer of hope that Forrest may actually rebuild his life with his family and be happy once again?

While each episode of the series finds Forrest attempting 2 or 3 crazy reviews, what I have really enjoyed about the show is the continuity from episode to episode. Things don’t reset from week-to-week. All of the misfortune and bad things Forrest has chosen to impart upon himself keeps building up. How will Forrest ruin his life tonight, or is there still a chance he’ll redeem himself?

Note: If you have missed any of the first 8 episodes, Comedy Central has made them available for free via their YouTube channel.

On tonight’s episode, “Quitting, Last Day, Irish,” Forrest quits a job; seizes an opportunity; and tries being Irish.

To see how the season ends and if Forrest can reclaim a good life, tune in to Comedy Central at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, The Millers, Bad Teacher, Elementary, Grey’s Anatomy, Surviving Jack, Sirens, and Vikings.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 12/12/13

Christmas is less than two weeks away, and many shows are airing their fall finales tonight! While I have these visions of me finally catching up on my ever-growing TiVo backlog over the holidays, I somehow doubt that will ever happen. As you count down the shopping days until Christmas, let us count up some shows we suggest you check out tonight…

thereturned1212smallTonight, we are down to the penultimate episode of The Returned’s first season. Last week, Pierre told the other crash victims’ parents about Camille, and they had loads of questions for her about their own children and why they hadn’t reappeared. Simon had been brought to the morgue after Thomas shot him as an “intruder,” but Simon soon found himself reawakening once again—in a morgue drawer. Thomas was afraid this might happen after he heard the news about Camille. Meanwhile, Victor had a scar growing on his arm like the one on Lena’s back. And at the end of the episode, we saw Lucy walk out of her hospital room to meet up with Simon, who was wandering up from the morgue—these returned folks seem destined to find one another!

What do these scars mean? Why are these people back, and can they even die?! What is the big secret about the dam? I have so many questions, but this show is so good that I don’t care if they answer them all right away because I’m enjoying the ride, and I know there’s already a second season on the way. If you’re not watching this show, you should be—Sundance has been airing the new episodes every Thursday, but also a marathon of all of the previously aired episodes every Sunday, so there are lots of opportunities to catch up!

On tonight’s episode, “Adèle,” various clans begin to emerge in the town’s ever-more-chaotic environment.

See if your curiosity is piqued tonight on Sundance Channel at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, The Millers, The Crazy Ones, Elementary, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Grey’s Anatomy, Sean Saves the World, The Michael J. Fox Show, and Parenthood.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 10/3/13

Help, I’m drowning in new TV! I thought the summer was busy, but now that the fall TV lineup is back in full swing, I don’t know how I’m going to keep up! To help you try to stay afloat in this vast primetime ocean, we’ve got some suggestions on what shows to check out tonight.

Kyle’s Choice

welcometothefamilysmallThe new shows keep on coming—tonight, NBC premieres the new comedy, Welcome to the Family. This sitcom explores the culture clash when two very different families are thrown together by an unplanned pregnancy. Latino gym owner Chuey Hernandez (Ricardo Chavira) is proud of his son Junior (Joseph Haro), valedictorian and first of the family to be heading off to college. However, Junior’s promising future may be put on hold when he discovers his secret girlfriend Molly (Ella Rae Peck) is pregnant. Molly’s parents (Mike O’Malley, Mary McCormack) aren’t too thrilled by this either—not that Molly’s really had a promising future to begin with.

I enjoyed tonight’s pilot and look forward to seeing where the series goes. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but still a lot of fun. I liked the two “teenage” leads as well as the rest of the cast—Mike O’Malley is always great, and Ricardo Chavira brings that same humor he brought to Desperate Housewives. However, I didn’t even realize it was In Plain Sight’s Mary McCormack playing the mother until I read a review weeks after I had watched the pilot—she looks so different!

Find out if you like this sweet new comedy tonight on NBC at 8:31/7:31c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, The Millers, The Crazy Ones, Elementary, Grey’s Anatomy, Parks and Recreation, Sean Saves the World, The Michael J. Fox Show, Parenthood, Glee, Childrens Hospital, NTSF:SD:SUV:: and Hot Package.

Pilot Watch 2013 – CBS

We’ve done the FOX pilots, but now, Megan, Kyle, and I are back to talk about the CBS pilots for the 2013 season. We have each rated them as Watch, Maybe, or Skip, so check out what we have to say.

Hostages (Premieres 9/23)

hostagespilotsmallJenny: Love Dylan McDermott a lot, but this one’s a skip for me. Too dark, too much drama. I don’t watch straight-up dramas. I get enough of that away from the TV. I think for fans of this genre, they’ll love it, but it isn’t for me. – Skip

Megan: This show is a must see for me, which is a problem for my poor, overworked DVR. There’s something about an intelligent drama that just makes my life a better place to be, and this show is exactly that. I’m also very happy that it’s a 12-episode season, because it makes the writers work that much harder to deliver a stellar season. – Watch

Kyle: I really enjoyed this pilot—Toni Collette and Dylan McDermott are great. The pilot sets up a really interesting premise—it’s a suspenseful ride with some unexpected twists. In the first hour, they give each of the characters his or her own secrets, while also establishing a much larger conspiracy arc. I’m really interested to see where the series goes. – Watch
