If We Controlled Your Remote… 7/22/12

Ahh, it’s the start of a new week. I’m so happy because there’s some great stuff on this week, including the season premiere of Warehouse 13 (which is amazing!), an exciting new episode of Covert Affairs, & lots more. There’s way too much on tonight (honestly, I had a really tough time choosing what to recommend…), but we’ve trid our best to narrow it down for you. We missed a lot, though, so be sure to check out what else we’re watching. 😉

Jenny’s Choice #1

My first pick tonight is the season finale of Food Network Star. It’s been a great season—totally different than any season before it. Having the 3 mentors really was a neat idea. Honestly, I feel like we got to know each of the competitors better, and there was none of the crap we went through in previous seasons…like last season with Penny & everyone else in the house. The teams banded together and were supportive of each other, even down to last week’s episode, and I don’t remember seeing even once the teams fighting each other. I like that because it means we’re seeing the competition to be the next Food Network Star and not a lot of personal stupidity.

The final four contestants are Martie, Yvan, Michele, & Justin. I’ve been going back and forth since last week’s episode. I wanted Ippy to win, but since he’s out of the competition, I think my vote has to go to Yvan, and if not him, Justin. I think Michele would have a hard time keeping me interested, and Martie is a sweet woman, but honestly, she drives me nuts. I find Justin a bit arrogant, which is why he isn’t my top pick, but he’s interesting, so if he won, I’d probably check out his show. Who are YOU rooting for? Comment & let me know!

On tonight’s episode, “Finale: A Star Is Born,” the four remaining contestants compete to win a show on Food Network, and team leaders Bobby Flay, Alton Brown, and Giada De Laurentiis present their candidates after reviewing their journey to the end, where America’s vote is unveiled.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 7/1/12

Happy Canada Day to all my fellow Canadians! There are so many reasons why we should be proud to be Canadians—but one of the many is Ryan Gosling. 🙂 Of course, there is also our healthcare, our equality, maple syrup, Canadian bacon, and poutine. Not to mention Rookie Blue and Flashpoint… Oh, and Dill Pickle chips, eh? There’s no doubt aboot it, Canada is amazing, and I am truly proud to say, “Happy birthday, Canada! There’s nowhere I’d rather live.” Enough of my Canadian pride for now. Let’s see what you should be watching tonight.

Megan’s Choice

True Blood is one of those shows that has no boundaries—at all. They have taken us on a journey through so many subjects that other shows would pee their pants just thinking about. Last week’s episode took us on a trip down memory lane with Pam and how Eric became her maker. The sad, lonely life of a madam—but he rescued her and showed her kindness. That’s the thing about Eric. He does have a good heart…just buried in a vicious, masculine, vampire body. (Did reading that sentence make you flush as much as it made me while writing it? NO? Never mind, then.)

We also saw Steve Newlin as the new Nan Flanagan, Jason confronted the teacher that took advantage of him when he was younger, and Tara hid in the freezer at Merlotte’s for a while. In the end, Tara fled Merlotte’s after being confronted by Sookie and tried to off herself in a tanning bed (watch out, those buggers will kill ya.). Throughout the episode, we learned that pictures of Andy’s ass ended up on Facebook thanks to Holly’s kids—seriously, people… Be careful of who has naked pictures of you. You never know where they’re going to end up. 😉 Overall, it was a good episode with a few moments that made me gasp—but it wouldn’t be True Blood without those.

On tonight’s episode, “We’ll Meet Again,” Eric and Bill are afraid for their lives; Sookie opens up to Alcide; Lafayette endagers Sookie; Roman and Salome search for a traitor in the council; Andy and Jason go to a party; Terry has a flashback; and Sookie drowns her sorrows.

To see how many more boundaries this show can shatter, tune in to HBO at 9/8c. Learn where to find episodes online of True Blood @ Clicker.

Tonight, I’ll also be watching/DVRing The Great Escape, The Glades, Drop Dead Diva, Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition, and Cupcake Wars.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/27/12

It’s the start of a new week, but for a lot of people, it’s a long weekend because of Memorial Day tomorrow. So that means for those lucky people, it’s still the middle of the weekend, which means we get to relax tonight and enjoy the great new TV without having to worry about getting up early and going to work. Yay! To see what we think you should be watching tonight, read on.

I’m still really digging the new way they are doing this season of Food Network Star. It always looks like the “mentors” are having a good time, too. And so far (knock on wood), I’ve been happy with the eliminations. Last week, Kara went home, and while I didn’t hate her, she just never came across as comfortable to me. The bus tour was fun, although how Giada got Little Italy baffles me. I’m sure it was luck…but man, what luck it was. haha

On tonight’s episode, “Dessert Chopping Block,” it’s a dessert challenge with a basket of ingredients – and the contestants face Chopped judges as they play the Food Network Star version of the show.

Tonight, I’m also going to be watching/DVRing Cupcake Wars & Iron Chef America.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/20/12

It’s the start of a new week and really…it’s SO much slower this week than we’ve had in awhile. You’ll notice as we go through the week that not everyone is posting every day, and that’s simply because there isn’t always something we all want to watch/recommend on! Megan is getting a break tonight, but she’ll be back tomorrow. There are still a few things on, though, so check out our recs!

Last week’s premiere of Food Network Star was so different and so cool. I loved having the three teams of contestants each coached/mentored by a different master chef/personality. I liked so many of the contestants that I can’t name which team I’m rooting for yet. It’s a close race so far! This is a very different way to do the show, and so far, I think it’s working well. I’m hoping that continues tonight with the second episode.

On tonight’s episode, “NYC on the Go,” after the finalists are divided into three separate teams, they are given tours of various New York City neighborhoods, where they learn about the local landmarks and food. The contestants prepare a dish inspired by their New York district.

Tonight, I’m also going to be watching/DVRing Cupcake Wars, Jesse Stone: Benefit of the Doubt, & the series premiere of Mystery Diners on Food Network.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/13/12

Wow… The last few days have been absolutely cray-cray for renewals! Maybe it’s just me, but a lot more shows seem to have been renewed this year than I can remember in previous years. A handful had already been canceled, and there were obviously already some (Chuck, House, Desperate Housewives etc) that were ending this season completely. We’re waiting to hear about a dozen shows, give or take a few, and aside from a couple of cancellations, there haven’t been huge disappointments. I know fans of GCB, The Secret Circle, & Missing especially were shocked and disappointed, but there was tons of great news, as well, such as a full 22-episode renewal order for Happy Endings and renewals (even with shortened seasons) of most of the NBC Thursday comedies. To keep updated easily on what has and hasn’t been renewed, check out TVLine’s Renewal Scorecard. Now… On to what we think you should be watching at the start of this BUSY week of finales! (Oh, and Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms and mom stand-ins out there!)

Like I mentioned the other day, I’m a fiend for cooking competition shows on Food Network especially, and one of the biggest and most fun is Food Network Star, which premieres tonight. Normally, the competitors are split into teams but there are no coaches. This year, the show is switching things up a LOT. Not only will the group be split into three teams, but each team will have a “coach.” In the past, Bobby Flay & Giada De Laurentiis have been judges on the show, but this season, they have been joined by Alton Brown, and the three of them will each be coaching a team to success on camera and in the kitchen. I think it will be a VERY interesting change-up to the show and should make for some fun times.

I’m not sure who I want to win – which competitor or which judge. lol I do recognize at least one of the contestants. Michele Ragussis was a competitor on Chopped and competed on 24 Hour Restaurant Battle, which she and her teammate won. I think she’ll be a fierce competitor for Bobby Flay. I guess we’ll see if her being somewhat known on Food Network already gives her an advantage or a disadvantage among the other competitors. You can tweet along with the show and show your support for your favorite judge & team with the hashtags: #Star (for the show), and for the judges, #TeamAlton, #TeamBobby, or #TeamGiada.

On tonight’s 2-hour premiere, “Impossible Beginnings,” mentors Alton Brown, Bobby Flay, and Giada De Laurentiis welcome 15 new hopefuls to join their teams. Chef Robert Irvine challenges the finalists to creat pop-up restaurants with a small budget and a limited amount of time.

Tonight, I’m also going to be watching the Desperate Housewives finale, the series premiere of Invention Hunters, & the champions competition on Cupcake Wars.
