Kyle’s Choice
Tonight, TNT kicks off the new limited series I Am the Night, a noir thriller set in 1965 Los Angeles and inspired by true events. After making a startling discovery that her mother lied to her about her lineage, naive teenager Fauna Hodel (India Isley, The Secret Life of the American Teenager) decides to head from Reno, Nevada into Los Angeles, in search of her grandfather George (Jefferson Mays, Law & Order: SVU) she never knew about. However, Fauna’s mother had good reason to keep her daughter in the dark, as there is a deadly mystery surrounding George Hodel. Meanwhile, former marine-turned-hack reporter Jay Singletary (Chris Pine) finds himself looking into the gruesome murder of a young woman. At age 18, Singletary had a promising career as a full-time reporter for the LA Times, but he messed up and told a story he shouldn’t have, which ruined his career. This story still haunts him years later and has left him a shell of the man he used to be: depressed, taking drugs, having thoughts of suicide, and doing grunt work for the LA Examiner. The subject of that fateful article was George Hodel, so it’s only a matter of time before Fauna and Singletary cross paths.
I checked out tonight’s premiere, and it’s a bit of a slow burn but in a good way. The pilot establishes the characters, poses a lot of questions, and whets the appetite for the larger mystery to come. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing more of the series and seeing how this mystery plays out. I’ve seen the trailer for this miniseries at least a half-dozen times in the theater, and so I’ve been anxious to see the show and learn how the famous unsolved 1947 Black Dahlia murder plays into the story.
On tonight’s premiere, “Pilot,†Fauna Hodel, a teenage girl who is given away at birth and grows up outside of Reno, Nev., makes a discovery that leads her to question everything about her origin; as Fauna begins to investigate the secrets of her past, she meets a ruined reporter.
Don’t miss the beginning of the story tonight on TNT at 9/8c.
I’ll also be recording The Good Doctor, Big Brother, Manifest, The Resident, The Passage, and Arrow.
