This week’s episode of This Is Us (titled: “Jack Pearson’s Son”) was another emotional rollercoaster that put all of the Pearsons in tough spots.

The past timeline
The Big Three are teenagers at this point, and Rebecca is about to leave for her tour with Ben and the band. Jack plans a special night for himself and Rebecca at O’Shannon’s for after her show on Valentine’s Day night. And while Jack seems very supportive, he admits to Miguel that he really doesn’t want her to go but also doesn’t want her to think he’s holding her back.

That afternoon, Rebecca overhears the Big Three talking about Kevin having sex with Sophie. When Rebecca and Jack sit down with Kevin to have “the talk,” Randall is having an anxiety attack about his Hamlet paper. Jack calms Randall down, ending the conversation with Kevin. Rebecca is worried that this isn’t the time for her to go on tour, and Jack reassures her, saying he can handle it.

This week’s episode of This Is Us (titled: “I Call Marriage”) explores the stages before, during, and after marriage between all of the Pearson clan, showcasing the good and the bad.

Recap:

Randall
Randall has a terrible dream, where he finds William dead at the piano. Something is off since having that dream, and everything seems to be going downhill for him this week. At work, the new guy, Sanjay, is slowly taking over Randall’s accounts. When he confronts his boss about it, it seems that Randall’s home life is starting to affect his previously long work hours. Then when Beth “called marriage,” telling Randall he had to go to Tess’s chess tournament over the work dinner, it seemed this was the last straw for Randall. His final scene showed him unable to hold on to a glass of water because his hands were shaking so much.

Kate
Kate is doing well at her immersion weight-loss camp. After one of her classes, Toby texts her with a message about a package waiting for her at the front desk. Turns out, the package is him! He wants to take Kate to a hotel for the day so they can catch up. Kate doesn’t want to leave because of the rigorous schedule of the camp, and Toby understands (sort of). And then there’s Duke. He’s continuing to hit on Kate, and then when he meets Toby, he makes an innuendo about Kate that doesn’t sit right with Toby, which is part of the reason he decides to stay. Later, Toby shows up at her sticks class with new threads and light-up sneakers. He treats the class like a joke, and Kate gets angry with him about it afterward. He tells her he misses her and his incisions aren’t healing like they are supposed to and he’s a little scared. When Kate tries to apologize, Toby gives her his grandmother’s ring and leaves. Later that night, Kate ends up outside of Cabin 13 (Duke’s cabin) with her finger hovering over Toby’s name in her cell phone.

This week’s episode of This Is Us (titled: “Three Sentences”) revealed a particularly life-changing birthday party for the Pearson gang while revelations were made in the present timeline for the Big Three.

Recap:

The Pearson’s Birthday
Showing through the lens of home movies, the Big Three have celebrated their birthdays together, complete with a three-layered cake and pin the tail on the donkey. When the kids come to Jack and Rebecca and want separate birthdays one year (they will be turning ten), the parents are less than thrilled but comply with their kids’ wishes. Kate wants a Madonna theme, Kevin wants a Princess Bride theme, while Randall just wants a magician.

While Jack is Bedazzling a pair of gloves for Kate, he mentions to Rebecca that he wants to have another kid. He feels the Big Three are growing up so quickly and they won’t need him anymore. Rebecca understands what he’s saying, but she tells him she’s done having kids.

This week’s episode of This Is Us (titled: “The Big Day”) filled in the blanks about the day the Big Three were born and the people involved.

Recap:

Jack & Rebecca
We get a glimpse of Rebecca in her early pregnancy when Jack puts on music for the babies and they start to move around in her belly. The two dance, and it’s just perfect…until months later when Rebecca is very pregnant and none of her shoes fit. She’s hormonal and overreacts about everything. She ends up telling Jack to leave the house for the day so she can relax. Soon enough she remembers that it’s his birthday and she just kicked him out! She tries to make him a cake and realizes she has none of the ingredients needed. Since she kicked her husband out, she has no car. She tapes a pair of flip-flops to her feet and trudges to the closest store within walking distance, which happens to be a liquor store. Out of breath and out of patience, she hysterically asks the clerk for something “homemade” that she can present to her husband. He gives her a muffin, and she buys some twinkies to “frost” the muffin. Then on the way out, she finds the “Terrible Towel” as a present for Jack and heads home.

Meanwhile, Jack is out with Miguel and his friends (who constantly find excuses to be away from their families) and realizes that the only place he wants to be is with his family. Instead of buying golf clubs as a birthday present for himself, he purchases a video camera and secretly tapes Rebecca talking to the babies. Years later, we see the Big Three watching home movies recorded from that very camera.

We get a few snippets from the hospital, filling in the blanks of that day, including the heartbreaking conversation that Jack has to have with Rebecca about losing the third baby.

This week’s episode of This Is Us (titled: “The Right Thing to Do”) gave us Toby’s diagnosis while delving further back in the past timeline before the Big Three.

Recap:

Jack and Rebecca
We take several steps back in this episode with the past timeline. We get a peek into the home that Jack grew up in with an abusive father. Then we push ahead to when Rebecca and Jack think they are having a single baby and rent an apartment that is over their means. Then when the doctor informs them about the triplets, an added weight presses on their relationship. Rebecca has lunch with her mother (whom she doesn’t get along with) to discuss her future with the triplets. Her mother offers to have Rebecca, Jack, and the triplets live with them. Jack knows this isn’t something Rebecca wants, but they have no other choice. Rebecca sends Jack out for ice cream, and he forgets his wallet and quickly returns. He hears Rebecca crying, and while out on his errand, he swallows his pride and goes to his father to ask for money. Later, Jack takes Rebecca to a job site that seems to be a money pit for his boss. Jack bought it for them and has a plan to fix it up (at least the essential rooms) during the final months of Rebecca’s pregnancy. He did this without telling her where the money really came from.
