If We Controlled Your Remote… 8/21/14

What happened to summer?! It seems like it just started but feels like it is already over. Kids are already back to school in some areas, the Emmys are already next week, and yesterday I even saw someone asking for snow removal recommendations on my work’s community mailing list! As the onslaught of fall TV looms ahead, we’ve got some recommendations of some it’s-still-summer TV for you to check out tonight.

welcometoswedenlogosmallI was disappointed to see that NBC has already bailed on its Canadian co-produced comedy, Working the Engels—especially since the upcoming episodes included guest arcs by Gregory Smith (Rookie Blue) and Martin Short! However, with this pulled from the schedule, it means we will get a double-dose of Welcome to Sweden for the next few weeks! In the last episode, Bruce was having a difficult time fitting in in with Emma’s friends and always seemed to do the wrong thing. At the end of the episode, Bruce learned that his parents were coming to visit.

While it took me a little time to warm up to the series, it’s now one of the comedies I look forward to each week—although I wish it was airing on cable instead of NBC so that things didn’t have to be bleeped, blurred, or cut out. That said, I am really enjoying the humor, the characters and relationships, and the whole fish-out-of-water aspect of the series. They have also found some fun ways to bring in some recognizable guest stars, despite the distance. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season and happy that NBC has already renewed it for a second one.

On tonight’s first episode, “Parents!/Föräldrar,” Bruce’s parents visit, leading to a culture clash with Emma’s parents. Meanwhile, Bruce tries to prove that moving to Sweden was a good idea, and Emma shares big news.
And then in “Homesick/Lagom,” Bruce receives an offer from Amy Poehler (playing herself) to return to New York to help her resolve a financial problem. Poehler will stop at nothing to get Bruce’s aid, even enlisting Aubrey Plaza (playing herself) to help get him back to the U.S. Meanwhile, Bruce sets out to work as a celebrity money manager.

To see what news Emma shares and if Amy manages to lure Bruce back to the States, tune in to NBC at 9:01/8:01c & 9:30/8:30c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Big Brother, The Quest, Rookie Blue, Married, You’re the Worst, Mythbusters, and Defiance.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 7/10/14

With Comic-Con just two weeks away, I’ve been in a mad dash to submit my press room requests and put my schedule together. To add to the chaos, earlier this week, my water boiler sprung a leak and I had a bit of food poisoning—I thought summer was supposed to be a time of rest! You certainly wouldn’t know it was even summer, based on tonight’s TV lineup—there are at least 10 premieres and 1 finale on TV tonight! So we’re here with some suggestions to help you choose what to watch.

Kyle’s Choice

welcometoswedensmallOne of the new shows starting up tonight is the NBC comedy, Welcome to Sweden. Bruce Evans (Greg Poehler), a successful accountant to the stars in New York City, is madly in love with his girlfriend Emma (Josephine Bornebusch). So when Emma accepts a job in her native Stockholm, Bruce makes the life-changing decision to join her. But he’s is not prepared for the huge culture shock ahead, which starts with moving in with Emma’s therapist mother, Viveka (Lena Olin), and retired sea captain father, Birger (Claes Månsson).

The series is based on events in the life of Greg Poehler, who serves as executive producer, along with sister Amy Poehler, and guest stars over the season include Patrick Duffy, Illeana Douglas, Amy Poehler, Aubrey Plaza, Will Ferrell, and Gene Simmons. It sounds like a really fun premise—I’m a real fan of these fish-out-of-water style comedies. And if Greg Poehler is even half as funny as his sister, then this show should be great!

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot – Day One/Välkommen,” Bruce faces unique challenges and culture clashes while struggling to impress Emma’s Swedish family.

See how Bruce is getting along in Sweden tonight on NBC at 9:01/8:01c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Big Brother, Rookie Blue, Hollywood Game Night, Working the Engels, MythBusters, Defiance, Dominion, and Rectify.
