If We Controlled Your Remote… 10/10/13

I had a great time in Montreal earlier this week for the annual Syfy Digital Press Tour. We got to visit the sets of Being Human and upcoming series Helix, both of which will air in January. However, those days away mean I’ve now got a huge backlog of shows to catch up on! If you’ve got some free time in your busy TV schedule, we’ve got some suggestions for you to check out tonight.

wonderlandsmallTonight, ABC premieres the new series Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. This spin-off from the original Once Upon a Time series follows the adventures of Alice in Wonderland. The format is similar to the original show, where we will follow concurrent stories in both the real world and in Wonderland. We will also see characters from other tales and worlds—such as Jafar and Cinderella—collide with the residents of Wonderland. I’m looking forward to seeing how the Once Upon a Time world is expanded and what new stories and characters we will meet in this spin-off.

On tonight’s premiere, “Down the Rabbit Hole,” Alice is taken to an asylum after she shares fanciful tales about a curious place called Wonderland, and the Knave of Hearts saves her before she has an operation.

Get swept away in a fairytale tonight on ABC at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, The Millers, The Crazy Ones, Elementary, Grey’s Anatomy, Parks and Recreation, Welcome to the Family, Sean Saves the World, The Michael J. Fox Show, Parenthood, Glee, and Childrens Hospital.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 10/3/13

Help, I’m drowning in new TV! I thought the summer was busy, but now that the fall TV lineup is back in full swing, I don’t know how I’m going to keep up! To help you try to stay afloat in this vast primetime ocean, we’ve got some suggestions on what shows to check out tonight.

Kyle’s Choice

welcometothefamilysmallThe new shows keep on coming—tonight, NBC premieres the new comedy, Welcome to the Family. This sitcom explores the culture clash when two very different families are thrown together by an unplanned pregnancy. Latino gym owner Chuey Hernandez (Ricardo Chavira) is proud of his son Junior (Joseph Haro), valedictorian and first of the family to be heading off to college. However, Junior’s promising future may be put on hold when he discovers his secret girlfriend Molly (Ella Rae Peck) is pregnant. Molly’s parents (Mike O’Malley, Mary McCormack) aren’t too thrilled by this either—not that Molly’s really had a promising future to begin with.

I enjoyed tonight’s pilot and look forward to seeing where the series goes. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but still a lot of fun. I liked the two “teenage” leads as well as the rest of the cast—Mike O’Malley is always great, and Ricardo Chavira brings that same humor he brought to Desperate Housewives. However, I didn’t even realize it was In Plain Sight’s Mary McCormack playing the mother until I read a review weeks after I had watched the pilot—she looks so different!

Find out if you like this sweet new comedy tonight on NBC at 8:31/7:31c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, The Millers, The Crazy Ones, Elementary, Grey’s Anatomy, Parks and Recreation, Sean Saves the World, The Michael J. Fox Show, Parenthood, Glee, Childrens Hospital, NTSF:SD:SUV:: and Hot Package.

Pilot Watch 2013 – NBC

We’ve done the FOX, ABC, & CBS pilots, but now, Megan, Kyle, and I are back to talk about the NBC pilots for the 2013 season. We’ve each rated them as Watch, Maybe, or Skip, so check out what we have to say.

Dracula (Premieres 10/25)

draculasmallJenny: Intriguing, but way too complicated for me. I’m not a fan of period dramas, and maybe I just don’t know my history, but for the life of me, I couldn’t tell when this was supposed to be set. A lot of the acting felt over the top, etc. There’s a reason I don’t watch shows like The Tudors or Game of Thrones, etc. – Skip

Megan: I was expecting to love the whole episode as much as I loved the trailer…but I didn’t. While I still love the idea of the show, I didn’t love the full execution. I found the trailer moving quickly, but the show itself dragged. It’s unfortunate, because I had really high hopes, but now I’m just wondering if it’ll be NBC’s first cancelled show? – Skip

Kyle: I like the 19th century England setting—the production values are really great. The series is like Revenge, if Emily Thorne was a vampire willing to kill to get revenge on corrupt members of the aristocracy and a secret order trying to hunt down vampires. While I wasn’t blown away, I found the series to be an interesting new twist on the classic tale and will check out more. – Maybe

Our Thoughts on the NBC 2013-14 Pilot Trailers

Megan, Kyle, & I have been giving our opinions on the trailers for the new fall shows. You can check out the ones we’ve already posted: ABC & CBS. Now, we’re here to give you our opinions on the NBC shows, starting with the dramas.

Dracula

  • Jenny: I started to mark this one as Most Likely 1 and Done, but…it’s vampires. My problem with it is the historical aspect of it. I’m not a fan of shows set way back when, so I have a feeling that will override my love of vampires. Therefore, I’m putting this as Curious. It looks like if it’s done right, it’ll be good for those people who don’t mind the historical aspect. We’ll see… – Curious.
  • Megan: I really enjoyed The Tudors—it was incredibly dramatic and full of some intense sexual themes (so not appropriate for NBC LOL)—so a lot of the same cast/crew on this show makes me hopeful. I love supernatural shows, but my only worry is if they will be able to keep the show going for a full season without it getting boring. – Excited.
  • Kyle: I liked The Tudors, and this series finds the same people working with the same actor, so I have some hope. My only fear is how do they keep the story going for a full season? – Curious.
