Food Network Star is about to return for its 13th season, but before we meet the new contestants, one last contestant needs to be chosen to join them. Tonight kicks off a special 3-week “Comeback Kitchen” competition, where six past finalists – Rob (season 12), Josh (season 8), Matthew (FNS season 11, “Comeback Kitchen” season 1), Jamika (season 5), Danushka (season 9), & Joy (season 12) – return to compete for the final open spot in the new season. Valerie Bertinelli and Tyler Florence judge the returning contestants as they tackle the fatal flaws that kept them from winning the last time and try to prove they are worthy of competing again. Tonight one of the six will be sent home.

Tonight’s premiere is available for free on iTunes and Vudu, so if you’ve already got a packed night of TV, you can check it out early! I had forgotten how much I missed this show – and these contestants. It was a lot of fun seeing these contestants again and learning what they’ve been up to since they last appeared on the show. I had a tough time deciding who I was rooting for. Even Danushka had me laughing out loud this time around! While I never end up watching the winners’ shows, I always enjoy the Food Network Star competition itself. I’m looking forward to the start of the regular competition in a couple of weeks but am thoroughly enjoying this mini competition in the meantime.

On tonight’s episode, “Comeback Kitchen: A Fresh Star(t),” former finalists return to the kitchen for a second shot; hosts Valerie Bertinelli and Tyler Florence identify what kept each of them from winning previously; each takes on a retro dessert and shoots an Instagram video about their updated version.

Re-meet the contestants and see who goes home first tonight on Food Network at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Madam Secretary, Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons, Making History, Family Guy, 12 Monkeys, The Leftovers, Silicon Valley, Veep, American Gods, and Twin Peaks.

Jenny’s Choice

For the last month, we’ve been back in the kitchen with some Iron Chef hopefuls in Iron Chef Gauntlet. A handful of chefs competed against one another in mystery ingredient challenges until last week, Stephanie Izard beat out Jason Dady and Sarah Grueneberg for the chance at the title this week. I’ve loved her from the beginning, so I was thrilled when she got the nod. Chef Izard is from Chicago and has three restaurants (all with Goat in the name. LOL). She was also the first female chef to win Top Chef, in season 4, beating out another of my favorite chefs of all-time, Richard Blais. Unfortunately, she also competed in Iron Chef America against Michael Symon, who beat her. So she has a score to settle tonight, in addition to simply wanting to win to become an Iron Chef herself!

On tonight’s episode, “The Gauntlet,” Chef Izard must run the three-round gauntlet against legendary Iron Chefs Bobby Flay, Masaharu Morimoto, and Michael Symon and finish with more points than the Iron Chefs combined. In the end, judges Anya Fernald and Ludo Lefebvre decide if the finalist makes culinary history and becomes an Iron Chef or leaves in defeat.

To see if Chef Stephanie Izard becomes IRON Chef Stephanie Izard, tune in to Food Network at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Food Network Star: Comeback Kitchen, & Iron Chef Eats.
