If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/21/17

Have you ever been at a loss as to what to watch? Too many shows to pick from? We’re here to give you our opinions on what we feel is worth watching. Check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Kyle’s Choice

Food Network Star is about to return for its 13th season, but before we meet the new contestants, one last contestant needs to be chosen to join them. Tonight kicks off a special 3-week “Comeback Kitchen” competition, where six past finalists – Rob (season 12), Josh (season 8), Matthew (FNS season 11, “Comeback Kitchen” season 1), Jamika (season 5), Danushka (season 9), & Joy (season 12) – return to compete for the final open spot in the new season. Valerie Bertinelli and Tyler Florence judge the returning contestants as they tackle the fatal flaws that kept them from winning the last time and try to prove they are worthy of competing again. Tonight one of the six will be sent home.

Tonight’s premiere is available for free on iTunes and Vudu, so if you’ve already got a packed night of TV, you can check it out early! I had forgotten how much I missed this show – and these contestants. It was a lot of fun seeing these contestants again and learning what they’ve been up to since they last appeared on the show. I had a tough time deciding who I was rooting for. Even Danushka had me laughing out loud this time around! While I never end up watching the winners’ shows, I always enjoy the Food Network Star competition itself. I’m looking forward to the start of the regular competition in a couple of weeks but am thoroughly enjoying this mini competition in the meantime.

On tonight’s episode, “Comeback Kitchen: A Fresh Star(t),” former finalists return to the kitchen for a second shot; hosts Valerie Bertinelli and Tyler Florence identify what kept each of them from winning previously; each takes on a retro dessert and shoots an Instagram video about their updated version.

Re-meet the contestants and see who goes home first tonight on Food Network at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Madam Secretary, Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons, Making History, Family Guy, 12 Monkeys, The Leftovers, Silicon Valley, Veep, American Gods, and Twin Peaks.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 7/27/14

It’s the start of the week, which is good because there’s some great stuff on, but we’re now over halfway through the weekend, which makes me want to cry. To console myself, here’s what we’re recommending tonight.

Jenny’s Choice

foodnetworkstar2013smallI’ve been enjoying Food Network Star this season, and most of the people I dislike are gone, thank goodness. Last week, the group was split into two teams to present a four-course meal to the judges, including Bob, Susie, and guest judge Penn (from Penn & Teller). I actually loved the way the teams were split. I just knew that Emma, Lenny, & Loreal were going to kick butt. But honestly, the concept Emma came up with might have worked had they been able to execute it correctly. Their team was a train wreck from the beginning. Emma did a horrible job at giving out the ingredients to Lenny & Loreal. And then, she totally ruined the excellent pork she’d been given. So when their team lost, it came as no surprise (especially since the other team kinda rocked it out), and I was pretty happy that Emma went home. I do have to say, though, that while I loved Lenny in the beginning, he’s starting to annoy me. If it were once every few times that he raised his hat and said “Ma’am” when Giada said his name, fine. But his cowboy/Southern “charm” is so over the top that it’s become obnoxious. So…yeah. We’ll see if I want him out next or not…

On tonight’s episode, “Rachael Ray Show,” the contestants are challenged to solve a culinary problem for a Rachael Ray Show viewer, and they must each create a dish that addresses the viewer’s concerns. Then they must perform a demo of the dish on the Rachael Ray Show.

See who performs the best and who goes home tonight on Food Network at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Guy’s Grocery Games, Flipping the Block, The Last Ship, The Musketeers, Unforgettable, Cutthroat Kitchen, Frankenfood, & Reckless.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 6/1/14

I hope you had a good break last week, because there’s a lot more on this week. Not as busy as it will be, but still a lot on. As I write this up, I’m watching Chow Masters and waiting for my husband to get home with drinks from Sonic. It’s been a good weekend so far. 🙂 Kyle’s power was out for 5 hours tonight (Saturday night), so he’s skipping the Remote. Megan & I are here to give you our recommendations, though, so check ’em out. 🙂

Jenny’s Choice #1

foodnetworkstar2013smallMy first pick tonight is the season premiere of Food Network Star. It’s no secret that I love cooking competition shows, and this is one of the great ones. Twelve contestants join mentors Alton Brown, Giada De Laurentiis, and Bobby Flay to compete in challenges designed to whittle the list down to the top spot, which will earn them their own show on Food Network. I love this show because there’s usually a wide variety of talent and personalities, and sometimes, those personalities clash, making it quite exciting. *laugh*

On tonight’s episode, “Hollywood Calling,” the mentors help prepare the finalists for their big debut at a Hollywood Premier Party, where each contestant must prepare and present one party appetizer to Food Network executives Bob Tuschman and Susie Fogelson, as well as Hollywood insiders, including E!’s Ross Mathews, who help decide which contestants have a shot at becoming a Food Network Star. One finalist’s dream ends here, and the remaining 11 continue their Star journey.

Meet the twelve contestants and pick your favorite tonight on Food Network at 9/8c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 8/11/13

I know, I’m running late this morning posting this. Blame life. 😉 Sick kid, horrible sleeping (me, not the kid), and that just means a slow Jenny in the morning. But we’re here now and ready to give you our opinions on what to watch during a full night of new TV. So read on! 😀

Jenny’s Choice

foodnetworkstar2013smallI have to go with the season finale of Food Network Star. Last week, Stacey got sent home, which I felt was a mistake, since she’d have been better than either of the two guys left in the competition. I know she wasn’t perfect—she had problems sounding and acting non-rehearsed during camera challenges—but when she got it right, she got it REALLY right. And I know I’d have preferred her show above either Rodney or Russell. Rodney’s constant “pie style” is rather grating on the ears (once or twice is fine, but I hear it way more than I should), and the same goes for Russell’s “culinary sins” bit. I will admit that their pilot presentations were better than I’d thought they would be…but to that end, Damaris knocked it out of the park for me. It was the most I’d enjoyed her the entire competition. I could tell she was doing what she really enjoyed. If she doesn’t win this thing tonight, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle. 😉

On tonight’s season finale, “America Picks a Star,” the results are in as America has voted to determine who will be the next Food Network Star. Before the winner is revealed, the finalists are back in the studio to tell all and view never-before-seen footage from the season. Bobby, Alton, and Giada each share their favorite moments during an emotional look back at remaining finalists’ journey to the finale. Then, suspense rises as the time comes to reveal who will walk away as the new Food Network Star.

Find out who wins tonight on Food Network at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Food Court Wars, Chopped, Cutthroat Kitchen, Iron Chef America (I don’t like Food Network at ALL, do I? LOL), Unforgettable, Whodunnit?, Brother vs Brother, & Crossing Lines.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 8/4/13

It’s Sunday, and I’m planning on enjoying what’s left of the weekend. That includes some great TV tonight. Megan’s busy with some family stuff, and JJ needed to get caught up on TV, so it’s just Kyle & me here to tell you our recommendations. Enjoy! 😉

unforgettable84smallLast week’s premiere of Unforgettable was really great. I hadn’t realized how much I’d missed Carrie & Al until I started watching. It did have a slightly different feel to it because of the cast changes, but I didn’t feel like the show was necessarily missing too much. They brought in the new cast in the Major Crimes squad—which was really decked out in a pretty awesome way, I have to say. It took me a bit, but by the end of the episode, I really liked their new boss. His voice and the way he speaks is hard to get used to, but I really like the character. Some of the new co-workers, I’m not sure about yet, but others, I already like. Plus, the ME is there, which is fantastic. So overall, I’m excited to have it back. I hope we get to see more about Carrie & Al’s current personal relationship. Are they dating again? Still just…friends but both would be good with more? The case last week was great, too—my husband totally called it with the hostage negotiator being behind the current kidnapping case.

On tonight’s episode, “Incognito,” Carrie goes undercover with a team of bank robbers when the Major Crimes squad gets a lead on the gang’s leader, a notorious thief who rarely shows his face. Sendhil Ramamurthy (Covert Affairs, Heroes) guest stars.

Find out how Carrie going undercover with bank robbers works tonight on CBS at 9/8c.
