Desperate Housewives Would Be a Huge Hit if Revived

Desperate Housewives is one of the best-loved and most successful American comedy-drama series of the 21st century. It ran for eight seasons from 2004 to 2012 and is still on reruns in several countries around the world. The comedy-drama and mystery series followed the lives of a group of married women and their daily successes, trials, and tribulations as seen through the eyes of their late friend and neighbour – thus the name Desperate Housewives.

The show had some well-known and talented cast, including Teri Hatcher and Marcia Cross, and one of them recently admitted that they would love to see the revival of the series. Eva Longoria, who played the role of Gabrielle Solis in Desperate Housewives, has been quoted by E!News as saying that she misses everything about the show and is very open to it being revived. The 42-year-old American actress did admit that it is unlikely that there will be a Season 9 of Desperate Housewives on the television screens, but fans of the show must now be more optimistic than ever about the revival of the series.

What made Desperate Housewives so special and loved was that it did not take itself too seriously and admittedly had the right mix of humour, seriously, intensity, and suspense – at least enough of a right mix to score an impressive overall 79% on Metacritic. It was a drama series, but at the same time it had the easiness of How I Met Your Mother. You could be invested in Susan Mayer, Bree Van de Kamp, and Lynette Scavo, but at the same time you could see their flaws and what they were doing wrong.

One of the reasons Desperate Housewives was so fun to watch is that the makers made the everyday mundane appear so fun and knew exactly when to sprinkle the mundane with some crime and intrigue. Be it from the normal conversation between neighbours, bickering between couples, or a mother trying to cope with the ways of her teenage daughter, the scenes were shot beautifully, and the characters played off each other. Desperate Housewives had a story to tell, and that story can still continue in Season 9. Arguably, there is still a market and an audience for commercial success.

Of course, the world and its way have changes since Desperate Housewives last aired in May 2012, and the creator, producers and the directors will have to adjust some of the ways of the “housewives.” For example, in 2018, Susan Mayer, Lynette Scavo, Bree Van de Kamp, and Gabrielle Solis will probably not be playing poker sitting next to each other. They will probably be in their own respective bedrooms or living rooms playing live dealer poker on websites such as Vegas Casino, which are desktop and mobile focused. Arguably, many new concepts and considerations can enter a new series, including our increasing obsession with social media.

Given that this is 2018 and their children would have grown up, the Desperate Housewives would also probably be working now, so the creators would need to add in more office dynamic or work-related storylines. A revival of the series could definitely work, and maybe Marc Cherry, who created the series, should look into reviving it – maybe not now, but perhaps in 2019 or in 2020.
