Tonight is the series premiere of Sweetbitter on Starz at 8/7c. The show tells the story of Tess (Ella Purnell), a 22-year-old who arrives in New York City ready to pursue a new life. When she finds herself interviewing for a position at one of the best restaurants in the city, she thinks she’s found a steady income and a safe place to wait. But Tess is quickly intoxicated by the chaotic, adrenalized world behind-the-scenes, tasting expensive wine, exploring dive bars, and learning who she can trust. The show illuminates the sensory journey of developing a palate. How the sweet, sour, salt, bitter, and umami threaten, complement and ultimately need each other so that we can learn to taste. Sweetbitter is a show about the life that happens to you while you’re waiting and is adapted from the best-selling novel of the same name by series creator Stephanie Danler, who serves as executive producer and writer on the series.
Following that is the series premiere of Vida on Starz at 8:30/7:30c. Tonight is the one-hour series premiere of Motherland on Sundance Now at 3:01AM/2:01AMc. The series follows Julia (Anna Maxwell Martin, Philomena, The Night Watch), who always wanted her kids to be brought up like she was — by her mother. But instead her mom has abandoned her, so now she is thrown head first into the Motherland where it’s sink or swim. While she struggles with work and life she meets a full array of hands-on parents including the “Alpha Moms” headed by Amanda (Lucy Punch, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Ben and Kate), who is the Queen Bee: everything is organized, vacuum-packed and sterile — even the kitchen chalk board is a statement of success. At the other end of the spectrum is single mom Liz (Diane Morgan, Me Before You), who is low energy but full of life hacks. She has learned to do things her way. Then there’s Kevin (Paul Ready, The Terror). He’s the stay-at-home Dad who embraces the Motherland with gusto — much to the irritation of the other mothers.

There are two series premieres tonight. THe first is the premiere of Abuse of Power on Oxygen at 7/6c. Hosted by esteemed television journalist Lauren Sivan, each episode will examine the twisted and true stories where people in positions of power and prominence took advantage of their authority to commit heinous acts of crime, all stemming from their control and unyielding power. This five-part limited series based on the acclaimed novels by Edward St. Aubyn tracks Patrick from a privileged but deeply traumatic childhood in the South of France through severe substance abuse in his twenties in New York and, ultimately, toward recovery back home in Britain. At once harrowing and hilarious, Oscar® nominee and Emmy® winner Benedict Cumberbatch stars as the troubled titular character.
Finally, tonight is a new episode of Saturday Night Live on NBC at 11:29/10:29c, with host Amy Schumer and musical guest Kacey Musgraves.
