Tonight is the 3-hour series premiere of Vets on the Beach on Nat Geo Wild at 8/7c. No day is ordinary for these dynamic vets across the Australian coast as they tackle cases like no other. Adorable pets face major problems – from a dog with a fishhook caught in his tongue to acupuncture for a spine injury. But pets aren’t the only patients on the docket. Aging elephants, orphaned kangaroos and sick wallabies need these superstar vets’ attention too.

Tonight is the series premiere of Scenes from a Marriage on HBO at 9/8c. This modern adaptation of Ingmar Bergman’s classic Swedish series stars Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain. Mira is a confident, ambitious tech executive left unfulfilled by her marriage, and Jonathan is a cerebral and accommodating philosophy professor desperate to keep their relationship intact. Throughout, the series mines the full complexity of Jonathan and Mira as individuals who ultimately know their marriage isn’t being torn apart by any one event or flaw, resulting in a radically honest series that allows the audience to eavesdrop on private conversations between two people torn between feelings of hate and love.

Tonight is the series premiere of American Rust on Showtime at 10/9c. Starring Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney, the series is a compelling family drama and a timeless story told through the eyes of complicated and compromised chief of police Del Harris (Daniels) of a Pennsylvania Rust Belt town full of good people making bad choices. It also stars Alex Neustaedter, Bill Camp, Clea Lewis, Dallas Roberts, David Alvarez, Julia Mayorago, Mark Pellegrino, Nicole Chanel Williams, & Rob Yang.

Vaughan and Pia Guerra, the show traverses a post-apocalyptic world in which a cataclysmic event decimates every mammal with a Y chromosome but for one cisgender man and his pet monkey. The series follows the survivors in this new world as they struggle with their efforts to restore what was lost and the opportunity to build something better. The ensemble cast features Diane Lane, Ashley Romans, Ben Schnetzer, Olivia Thirlby, Amber Tamblyn, Marin Ireland, Diana Bang, Elliot Fletcher, Juliana Canfield, and Missi Pyle.

Overnight is the documentary special A La Calle on HBO Max. Directed by Nelson G. Navarrete and Maxx Caicedo, A La Calle is a firsthand account of the extraordinary efforts of ordinary Venezuelans to reclaim their democracy from the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro, whose corrupt and brutal policies plunged the country into economic ruin. Working with a network of clandestine camera crews, smuggling hard drives out of Venezuela, the filmmakers spent three years recording exclusive interviews with key opposition figures including Leopoldo López (whose arrest and imprisonment inspired a national movement), Venezuelan democratic leader Juan Guaidó, and grassroots activist Nixon Leal, as well as a host of everyday citizens.

McAvoy’s role was entirely improvised; he wasn’t given a script or dialogue in an effort to evoke an honest portrayal of a person whose life is clouded by mystery. My Son is a remake of Christian Carion’s 2017 French film, which was similarly ad-libbed. Carion is writing and directing the English-language adaptation as well.

Overnight was the Netflix documentary film special My Heroes Were Cowboys. Robin Wiltshire’s painful childhood was rescued by Westerns. Now he lives on the frontier of his dreams, training the horses he loves for the big screen.

Today is the 5-hour Barrett-Jackson Live Auction. Houston 2021 Day 1. (Live.) special on FYI. Barrett-Jackson is in Houston for Day One of the World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions, live from the NRG Center.

Tonight is the 1-hour Dark Side of the Ring special on VICE at 9/8c. A private 757 flight descends into a nightmare as intoxicated wrestlers clash with their flight crew, erupting into one of wrestling’s most infamous scandals.

Tonight is the Amazon documentary special Black Power: A British Story of Resistance at 12:01AM/11:01PMc. Narrated by Daniel Kaluuya, the special looks at the 60s and 70s through the eyes of the young Black people who refused to take racism as a part of the natural order of things in the UK. It shows how the civil rights struggle in America inspired activists to take a stand, and features rare archive of Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Stokely Carmichael’s activities in Britain, as well as footage of leading figures in the movement in the UK: Altheia Jones-LeCointe, Darcus Howe and Roy Sawh. The film describes the different groups in the movement such as R.A.A.S., the British Black Panthers and The Fasimbas, that appeared in cities across the UK at the time. It illustrates how the activism of these groups, combined with community and culture, helped fuel hope and resilience, and ultimately started Britain on the road to being a more inclusive and diverse society. The film looks at key moments in the movement’s history, such as the Mangrove Nine trial and the Oval Four convictions, and examines controversial figures such as Michael X, and events such as The Spaghetti House siege. But at the heart of this documentary is a series of interviews from past activists, many of whom are speaking for the first time about what it was really like to be involved in the British Black Power movement, who bring to life one of the key cultural revolutions in the history of the nation.

Tonight is the Amazon documentary special Subnormal: A British Scandal at 12:01AM/11:01PMc. Examining one of the biggest scandals in the history of British education, Subnormal: A British Scandal reveals how Black children in the 1960s & 70s were disproportionately sent to schools for the so-called “Educationally Subnormal” (ESN). This gripping documentary tells the story of how Black parents, teachers and activists banded together to expose the injustice and force the education system to change. It explores the controversial debates on race and intelligence that led to the scandal, and the devastating impact it had on the children affected. The film discusses the IQ testing that took place and shows why it was heavily biased against Black migrant children. Subnormal also describes the events surrounding a leaked school report which revealed the common misconception of teachers that Black children have lower IQs than their English contemporaries. The explicit racism of the report galvanized the community into action and led to the publication of Bernard Coard’s seminal book How The West Indian Child is Made Educationally Sub-normal in the British School System. Featuring first-hand interviews with key participants in these events, the film charts the ensuing media storm and the persistence of black parents and organizers which ultimately led to The Race Relations Act being amended to prevent racial bias in education. Though these special schools were eventually phased out, this documentary also features several ESN students who talk for the first time about their education and what it is like to live in the shadow of an ‘Educationally Subnormal’ label. Drawing on a rich array of personal testimony, documents and archive footage, the film captures this high-stakes battle between Black parents and the British education system to drive fair and equal treatment for Black children in today’s society.

Tonight is the feature film premiere of The Mad Women’s Ball on Amazon at 12:01AM/11:01PMc. The film tells the story of a young, radiant and passionate woman, Eugénie, living during the close of the 19th century. As a young woman, Eugénie discovers that she has the special power to hear the dead. After her family discovers her secret, she is taken to La Pitié Salpétrière Hospital without any way of escaping her fate. The hospital is a neurology clinic in Paris run by the famous professor and pioneer of neurology Dr. Charcot, where women diagnosed with hysteria, “craziness”, egomania, epilepsy and other types of mental or physical diseases are committed. Her destiny becomes entwined with that of Geneviève, a nurse at the hospital whose life is passing her by. Their encounter will change both their futures as they will prepare for the annual “Bal des folles” organized by Dr. Charcot at the hospital.

Tonight is the complete limited series premiere of Uprising on Amazon at 12:01AM/11:01PMc. From executive producer and co-director Steve McQueen, Uprising is the extraordinary three-part story of three intertwined events in the UK from 1981: The New Cross Fire which killed 13 young Black people, the Black People’s Day of Action, and the Brixton riots. The series will reveal how these events are connected through interviews with those involved and rare archival footage, and how, in the process, race relations were defined for a generation.
