This Week on TV – 9/11/22-9/17/22

Before we get to the schedule, I’d like to take a moment to remember the unimaginable 2977 lives lost on September 11, 2001, not to mention the many, many more who were injured and those who survived or had family among the victims who live with the tragedy even to this day. My heart goes out to each and every one.

Welcome to a great new week of TV! There’s a good bit on this week, so make sure you check out the schedule so you don’t miss anything!

Tonight is the series premiere of Monarch on Fox at 8/7c. Monarch is a Texas-sized, multi-generational musical drama about America’s first family of country music, the Romans, headed by the insanely talented, but tough as nails Queen of Country Music Dottie Cantrell Roman (Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon, Feud, Thelma & Louise) and her beloved husband, “Texas Truthteller” Albie Roman (multi-Platinum country music star and three-time Academy of Country Music (ACM) Award winner Trace Adkins, Old Henry). Dottie and Albie have created a country music dynasty. But even though the Roman name is synonymous with authenticity, the very foundation of their success is a lie. And when their reign as country royalty is put in jeopardy, heir to the crown Nicolette “Nicky” Roman (Golden Globe nominee Anna Friel, Pushing Daisies) will stop at nothing to protect her family’s legacy, while ensuring her own quest for stardom.

Tonight is the series premiere of The Serpent Queen on Starz at 8/7c. The new series stars Golden Globe(R) winner, two-time Academy Award(R) and two-time BAFTA Award-nominated actress,Samantha Morton (Minority Report, Harlots, The Walking Dead), as the nefarious Catherine de Medici, who, against all odds, became one of the most powerful and longest-serving rulers in French history. A historical drama with an edge, The Serpent Queen puts a contemporary spin on conventional storytelling to tell the tale of Catherine de Medici’s (Morton) rise to power. In the series premiere, “Medici Bitch,” Catherine’s tale unfolds through flashbacks as she defends her actions and imparts the lessons she’s learned to her new servant confident, Rahima (Sennia Nanua, The Girl with All the Gifts, Frankie). At 14, the young, orphaned Catherine (Liv Hill, Three Girls, Jellyfish) marries into the 16th-century French court. Despite her commoner status, her uncle Pope Clement (Charles Dance, Game of Thrones, The Crown), has negotiated a large dowry and a geopolitical alliance in return for the union, and with it comes the expectation of many heirs. However, on her wedding night, Catherine learns that her new husband is in love with Diane de Poitiers (Ludivine Sagnier, Lupin, The Young Pope), a beautiful lady-in-waiting twice his age. With her future suddenly uncertain and with little hope of conceiving, Catherine must quickly learn who she can trust – both within her personal entourage of courtiers and the members of the royal court – while outmaneuvering anyone who underestimates her determination to survive at any cost.

Tonight is the series premiere of American Gigolo on Showtime at 9/8c. American Gigolo follows Julian Kaye (Jon Bernthal, We Own This City, The Walking Dead) after his wrongful conviction release from 15 years in prison as he navigates his complicated relationships with his former lover Michelle (Gretchen Mol, Boardwalk Empire), his troubled mother, and the people who betrayed him. While Julian struggles to reconcile the escort he was in the past and the man he is today, Detective Sunday (Rosie O’Donnell, The L Word: Generation Q) seeks the truth about the murder that sent Julian to prison all those years ago, unearthing a much larger conspiracy along the way. Additional casting includes Lizzie Brocheré (Falling Water) as Isabelle, the heiress to a ring of sex workers; Gabriel LaBelle (Dead Shack) as Johnny, a younger version of Julian; Leland Orser (Ray Donovan) as Richard Stratton, a self-made tech billionaire; and guest star Wayne Brady (The Wayne Brady Show) as Julian’s best friend and mentor Lorenzo. Alex Fernandez (Runaways), Sandrine Holt (House of Cards), Yolonda Ross (The Chi) and Melora Walters (Pen15) also guest star.

Overnight was the premiere of the feature film Official Competition on AMC+. When a billionaire entrepreneur impulsively decides to create an iconic movie, he demands the best. Renowned filmmaker Lola Cuevas (Penelope Cruz) is recruited to mastermind this ambitious endeavor. Completing the all-star team are two actors with massive talent but even bigger egos: Hollywood heartthrob Felix Rivero (Antonio Banderas) and radical theatre actor Ivan Torres (Oscar Martinez). Both are legends, but not exactly best friends. Through a series of increasingly eccentric trials set by Lola, Felix and Ivan must confront not only each other, but also their own legacies. Who will be left when the cameras finally start rolling?

Overnight was the premiere of the documentary film Mija on Disney+. Doris Muñoz desperately longed for better representation in the music she listened to as a teenager. At 23, she took matters into her own hands and began a career in music talent management, passionately advocating for rising Latinx artists. Her swift success transformed her into a pillar for first- and second-generation Americans as well as a breadwinner for her undocumented family. Three years later, Doris abruptly receives news that forces her to reconsider working in music. At this moment of crisis, Doris finds Jacks Haupt, a promising Chicana singer, desperate to break out of her home in Dallas, Texas. Beyond shared moments of joy and hope, Doris and Jacks bond over the ever-present guilt of being the first American-born members of their undocumented families and the financial risks of pursuing their dreams. What’s more, their success is inextricably tied to their family’s hopes for citizenship and family reunification. Mija is a moving love letter to immigrants and their children and to the daughters that fight for their families, their dreams and themselves. The film is an immersive look at the importance of representation in music, highlighting the social and cultural impact across all generations.

Overnight was the premiere of the documentary film Skandal! Bringing Down Wirecard on Netflix. Upstart payment firm Wirecard wowed the financial industry with its runaway success — until a tenacious team of journalists exposed massive faud.

Overnight was the premiere of the feature film I Used to Be Famous on Netflix. A former boy band star unexpectedly gets a second shot at success when he forms a bond with a gifted young drummer. It stars Ed Skrein, Eleanor Matsuura, Leo Long, Eoin Macken, Kurt Egyiawan, Neil Stuke, & Rachael Ofori.

Overnight was the premiere of the feature film Mirror, Mirror on Netflix. Employees at a cosmetics firm grapple with their respective desires by arguing with themselves in the mirror, ahead of their company’s anniversary party.

Overnight was the premiere of Heathers: The Musical on Roku Channel. At Westerberg High, Veronica Sawyer is just another one of the nobodies dreaming of a better day. But when she’s unexpectedly taken under the wings of the three beautiful and impossibly cruel Heathers, her dreams of popularity finally start to come true. Until JD shows up – the mysterious teen rebel who teaches her that everyone fears being a nobody, but it’s murder being a somebody… Deliciously, darkly funny, romantic and moving, Heathers: The Musical is a truthful, uplifting parable for anyone who’s ever been in love, in trouble…or even in high school! The on-stage magic will be available for audiences to watch for free only on The Roku Channel. How very…exciting!
