If We Controlled Your Remote… 6/12/19

Kyle’s Choice #1

Tonight two very different shows return to kick off new seasons.

First up, airing on both Syfy and USA Network, is the second season premiere of Krypton. In the first season, present-day Earthling Adam Strange traveled back in time to the planet Krypton to warn Seg-El – the future grandfather of Superman – of a pending attack by time-traveling super-villain Brainiac. If this Devourer of Worlds managed to destroy the planet, causing Superman to never be born, the Earth would be doomed. However, Kandor City was currently too distracted by a religious and political war that was going on – an underground rebellion known as Black Zero had formed against those in charge.

As the season came to a close, Brainiac finally arrived and started his attack on Kandor City. Dru-Zod, the future son of Lyta-Zod and Seg-El, had also traveled back in time to stop Braniac, but he had his own ulterior motives, desiring to rule over Krypton. He joined Black Zero, rising up the ranks, while awaiting Braniac’s arrival. Meanwhile, Seg-El’s grandfather Val-El, who was presumed dead, was actually alive and was rescued from the Phantom Zone by Dru-Zod; Jax-Ur revealed to Nyssa that she was in fact just a clone of the original Nyssa; and Doomsday escaped containment. During the big final showdown, Seg-El managed to trap Brainiac in the Phantom Zone, but he was pulled in as well. Dru-Zod destroyed the Phantom Zone gateway, trapping them both in there. He then seized control of Kandor City as well as most of the other Kryptonian City-States, declaring himself the leader. When Adam returned to Earth, he discovered a ruined city, with a giant statue of Zod.

The second season picks up 6 months later, as Zod continues to expand his empire. The others believe Seg-El is dead and don’t want his sacrifice to have been in vain. Even though Braniac has been stopped, the Earth still appears to be doomed. Can Adam and the resistance stop Zod’s evil plan to take over the world and fix things back to how they should be? Will they find a way to save Seg-El from the Phantom Zone? What does Nyssa’s revelation that she is a clone mean? And what does Doomsday’s escape pose another big danger? It looks like this will be another exciting season.

On tonight’s premiere, “Light-Years From Home,” Seg-El is stranded far from home, where his grandfather leads a rebellion against General Zod.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 6/5/19

Kyle’s Choice

Overnight last night, Netflix released the fifth season of the anthology series Black Mirror. Unfortunately, since we got the choose-your-own-adventure Bandersnatch film at the end of December, this season is just three episodes. This season’s first story, “Striking Vipers,” finds estranged friends Danny (Anthony Mackie, Avengers: Endgame) & Karl (Yaha Abdul-Mateen II, The Get Down) reuniting over a Mortal Combat-like video game they used to play a lot while in college. The latest version of the game includes an immersive VR experience, and Danny’s growing obsession with the game starts to affect his relationship with his wife Theo (Nicole Beharie, Sleepy Hollow). The second story, “Smithereens,” finds a rideshare driver’s (Andrew Scott, Sherlock) day spiraling out of control as he desperately seeks an audience with social media tech mogul Billy Bauer (Topher Grace, The Hot Zone). The episode also stars Damson Idris (Snowfall) as a young man who gets pulled into the events. The final episode, “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too,” follows lonely teenagers Rachel (Angourie Rice) and Jack (Madison Davenport, Sharp Objects), who move to a new town after their mother passes away. Thanks to technology, Rachel is able to form a connection to her pop star idol, Ashley O (Miley Cyrus, Hannah Montana). However, Ashley’s glamorous life isn’t all it appears to be.

Writer Charlie Brooker continues to provide fully fleshed-out, thought-provoking stories centered around technology. He shows how it can be both beneficial in our lives but can also turn into a destructive force as things can quickly go overboard. I thought these three stories got progressively better as I made my way through the season. All of these stories pose scenarios where technology could potentially take over our relationships or replace people in our lives. The producers have assembled a wonderful cast. Andrew Scott’s performance in the second episode is excellent, and the third episode shows a very different side of Miley Cyrus – this is definitely not Hannah Montana! The third episode was easily my favorite, as it has some really fun comedic moments as the story really comes together in the final act.

The thing that’s nice about Black Mirror is that all of the episode are separate, so you can jump in at any story if the plot sounds interesting or if it features some actors you enjoy. This is definitely one of my favorite Netflix shows. Charlie Brooker does an excellent job of coming up with these interesting and thought-provoking stories that shine a light on how technology could impact the human condition.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 6/2/19

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, AMC kicks off the fifth season of Fear the Walking Dead. During the fourth season, we lost a couple of the original main characters but gained some replacements along the way. As the season ended, our band of survivors consisted of Morgan, Strand, Althea, Alicia, Luciana, John, June, Wendell, Sarah, and Charlie. The group had been poisoned with antifreeze by a crazy serial killer, a filthy woman named Martha. However, apparently they just needed to drink a lot of beer to offset the poison, and they managed to find some in the nick of time. Martha ended up getting turned into a walker and was quickly dispatched by Morgan. It looked like the newly reunited gang was all set to head from Texas to Virginia, to the Alexandria community. However, Morgan changed his plans at the last minute, wanting to stay and continue Polar Bear’s work, helping to provide supplies for lost travelers and hopefully prevent someone else from ending up desperate and alone like Martha. The others decided to join him and planned to start by trying to find and help some of the folks that were on Al’s tapes. So they set up shop in an old denim factory, using it as their base of operations.

As the fifth season opens, we are thrust right into the middle of the action/story. Our band of do-gooders is off on a mission to find a man named Logan, who contacted them for assistance, when things run afoul. They now find themselves in a dangerous, unfamiliar new location. Not only are there zombies to deal with, but there’s also some unknown person or group that doesn’t seem want anyone in their neighborhood, and they have put up signs and other roadblocks to keep people out—anyone having flashbacks to Negan? What is this new threat, what do they want, and should our group be concerned?

I checked out the first few episodes of the season, and it’s definitely shaping up to be another exciting one, with many twists and turns. Just in the few episodes I saw, there are several new and familiar faces that show up to shake things up. And the number of threats our group is facing seems to grow exponentially with each new episode. I’m looking forward to learning more about what our survivors are really up against and seeing what else this season holds!

On tonight’s premiere, “Here to Help,” led by Morgan and Alicia, the group lands in uncharted territory in search of survivors to help; everything is not as it seems in this foreboding new land.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/31/19

Kyle’s Choice

Early this morning, Amazon Prime Video released all 6 episodes of the new original series Good Omens, which is an adaptation of the 1990 novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. Angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen, The Good Fight, Masters of Sex) and demon Crowley (David Tennant, Doctor Who) have been on Earth since its creation, literally. In fact it was Crowley who tempted Eve with that apple. While they work for opposite sides, the two have come to an arrangement during their centuries of influencing humans, particularly in situations where their efforts would just cancel one another out. This professional respect for one another has grown into a long-lasting friendship – in so much as an angel and a demon can be friends. The two are enjoying their time on Earth and don’t want to see it end anytime soon. So when they learn that the Antichrist has been born, they decide to insert themselves into the child’s life, to mentor him, so that when he comes into his powers at age 11, he will not bring about Armageddon. However, this means defying their superiors, who are looking forward to this long-awaited war between good and evil to play out – but things don’t go quite as smoothly as Aziraphale and Crowley planned.

Meanwhile, Anathema Device (Adria Arjona, Emerald City), an American ancestor of infamous 17th century witch Agnes Nutter, makes her way to the small British town where the Antichrist resides. Agnes had written a book of incredibly accurate prophesies, which has been passed down for generations. All her life, Anathema has been letting these prognostications dictate her actions, and that has led her to cross paths with Newton Pulsifer (Jack Whitehall, Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father), an awkward young man who seems to break any piece of technology he touches. Newton is the ancestor of the man who executed Agnes Nutter for being a witch, and the latest protege of the head of the Witch Hunter army (of one), General Shadwell (Michael McKean, Better Call Saul). Shadwell has a few screws loose and is focused on his self-appointed duty to rid the world of witches.

As the four horsemen of the Apocalypse make their way to the spawn of Satan, time is quickly running out. Humanity’s last chance to prevent Armageddon lies in the hands of a band of quirky misfits.

I can’t recommend this series highly enough. Over the course of the 6 episodes, you get a complete story, so it’s not a huge time commitment, and you don’t have to worry about being left on a cliffhanger that may never get resolved. Once I started watching the first episode, I couldn’t stop. Who would have thought a show about preventing the apocalypse could be so delightful and entertaining?! The show is filled with bizarre, off-beat characters and extremely smart and witty writing that combines fun pop culture references with a bit of social commentary on the human condition. The style and tone of the series often reminded me of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. The series is extremely faithful to the original source material, and now I can’t imagine anyone else but Tennant and Sheen in these roles. Crowley is like the classic cool rock star, who’s always wearing shades and drives around in his prized vintage Bentley. While he likes being evil, there is definitely some good in him, and he tries to hide this from his superiors. Meanwhile, Sheen’s Aziraphale is constantly trying to do good, but he sometimes breaks the rules when he feels like his superiors – such as the angel Gabriel (Jon Hamm, Mad Men) – don’t have the humans’ best interests in mind. The series’ cast also includes Frances McDormand (as the narrator/voice of God), Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), Miranda Richardson, Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland), and Mireille Enos (The Catch, The Killing).

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/29/19

Jenny’s Choice

My pick tonight is NBC’s newest drama, The Inbetween. Relative newcomer Harriet Dyer plays Cassie Bedford, a young woman who was born with the rare ability of visions, events that have already occurred or ones that will happen in the future. She also can see and communicate with ghosts. Her father is Detective Tom Hackett, played by the sexy and talented Paul Blackthorne (Arrow & The Dresden Files to name a couple of his latest and most famous roles). When he and his new partner, former FBI Agent Damien Asante (Justin Cornwell, I am the Night on TNT and CBS’s Training Day), need help solving a dark and twisty murder, Cassie agrees (albeit reluctantly) to help. Unfortunately, once she opens that door, the dead don’t want to let her rest.

I’ve seen the first couple of episodes and really enjoyed it. Cassie’s ability is nothing earth-shatteringly new, but it’s still creepy and spooky and all things ghostly. This show has been in the works for quite a while, and I don’t know that NBC has been advertising it much (although I don’t watch a lot of stuff on NBC right now, so maybe they have?), but I’d suggest giving it a shot because at least the first two episodes are really great.

On tonight’s premiere, “Pilot,” Cassie helps her father and his partner solve a young woman’s murder using her unique psychic powers. She also encounters a supernatural spirit, Ed Roven (recurring guest star, Sean Bolger), whose evil transcends time.
