One of my favorite new comedies last season was Superior Donuts, so I was thrilled when it was renewed. In case you didn’t see season one, here’s a quick summary/recap: Judd Hirsch plays Arthur, a gruff, set-in-his-ways donut shop owner in Chicago who refuses to sell his shop (which he opened in 1969 and ran with his late wife) or update the food & drinks he sells, even though business is slow because the world around him seems to be moving into the future without him, with cronuts & fancy coffee. One day, a young man named Franco (played by Jermaine Fowler) stopped in and somehow convinced Arthur to hire him. Franco is an artist (although to this point, his art has been pretty much confined to graffiti in his neighborhood), and he’s determined to bring Arthur into the 21st century, even if he has to do it kicking and screaming. Along with Arthur and Franco, there are a handful of regulars in the shop: cop Randy (Katey Segal), whose late father was Arthur’s best friend, and her overeager rookie partner James (Darien Sills-Evans); Tush (David Koechner), who uses the store as his makeshift office for the odd jobs he takes via fax machine; Maya (Anna Baryshnikov), a privileged grad-school student working on her Ph.D; Fawz (Maz Jobrani), a businessman from the Middle East who is over-the-top in so many ways and pushes Arthur daily to sell the donut shop’s building to him; and finally, there’s Sweatpants (Rell Battle), Franco’s longtime friend and roommate.

The cast has amazing chemistry together. Franco is one of the nicest characters on TV, in my opinion, and he and Arthur are great together. Randy is full of dry wit and humor and really cares about Arthur. Fawz is one of my favorite characters, though. He’s racist and rude in so many ways but seems to have a heart buried beneath all of it and is just funny all the way around. Together, the whole cast makes up a fun half hour, and I can’t wait to see what they get up to in season two!

On tonight’s episode, “What the Truck?” Arthur’s business is threatened when Sofia (Diane Guerrero), an ambitious young entrepreneur, parks her organic food truck in front of the donut shop, becoming a hit with his customers and catching Franco’s eye. Also, Franco grows frustrated trying to follow his dream of going to college.

Catch up with the donut shop gang tonight on CBS at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Dancing with the Stars, 9JKL, The Gifted, Halloween Baking Championship, Scorpion, & The Brave.

On last week’s episode of Superstore, there was an overriding theme of learning to stand up for oneself. The store was being robbed, and Jonah just stood there – and even moved out of the way so the robber could leave – but Dina jumped on the would-be-thief to thwart the robbery. Store manager Jeff commended Jonah for his lack of action because it was the official course of action that leaves Cloud 9 with the least liability. But Dina felt like she should have been recognized for her heroic deed and started to make fun of Jonah for his wimpy lack of action. Meanwhile, Glenn also had a tough time rising to a challenge – every time he tried to fire the store’s inept security guard, the employee just ended up in some other position. And finally, Amy was upset that the other employees weren’t inviting her to join them in trivia night. Once she finally got up the courage to say something, she ended up regretting it – the reasons they assumed she wouldn’t want to join them were exactly dead on.

This show has such a hilarious ensemble cast, and it’s one of the shows I really look forward to each week. One thing I especially enjoy about this time of year is that it is when most of the TV sitcoms kick off a trio of holiday-themed episodes. Tonight, it’s Halloween at Cloud 9, and I can’t wait to see what these zany employees get up to.

On tonight’s episode, “Sal’s Dead,” a dead body is discovered in the store on Halloween, throwing Glenn and Dina into a panic and confusing the shoppers. Meanwhile, Amy and Garrett get into big trouble using a dating app on Jonah’s phone.

Check out tonight’s fun, spooky Halloween episode on NBC at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Place, Will & Grace, Gotham, The Orville, Nathan for You, Van Helsing, and Ghost Wars.

I’m still really enjoying The Brave. I love all the characters and the story lines. Last week was a tense one, when the team went over to Afghanistan to interrogate a former US soldier turned member of the Taliban to find out which military base the group was targeting next. Patricia actually went out into the field with the team this time because of her skills as an interrogator. Unfortunately, while they were there at the prison, a guard colluded with one of the prisoners, which allowed the prisoners to kill the guards and take over the prison in order to escape. After some trial and error at finding a way out of the prison, they made their own with explosives, taking the American prisoner with them. Thankfully, even though they were chased, shot at, and nearly blown up by some of the bad guys, our guys escaped relatively unharmed – and Patricia was able to get the location of the target from the prisoner.

What I really enjoyed was the episode’s opening and ending, with Patricia gathering dirt from Afghanistan – a physical reminder of her son, who died while serving overseas. I also really enjoyed seeing Jaz set up her sniper position with the motion sensor, and when it went off, she just calmly switched guns and shot without much more than a glance, knowing whoever was coming up without warning was a bad guy. And finally, with Patricia away from the office, Noah was left in charge. And although Hannah teased him about showing up in a suit and tie, he really did a great job filling in for Patricia, making the tough call when needed. It was great to see him stepping up and taking charge. I’m going to be very, very sad if this show doesn’t get picked up for a full season!

On tonight’s episode, “Enhanced Protection,” when Ambassador Charles Webb (guest star Ben Cain) is in danger while stationed in Nigeria, Dalton’s team heads to the region to find a situation different than they expected. Jaz makes a connection with a little girl she meets during the mission, and Patricia receives some personal news. D.K. Uzoukwo, Amanda Warren, and Jimmy Jean-Louis also guest star.

See what situation they find themselves in tonight on NBC at 10:01/9:01c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing The Big Bang Theory, Dancing with the Stars, 9JKL, The Gifted, Halloween Baking Championship, & Scorpion.

Tonight, AMC’s The Walking Dead returns for its eighth season. Last season opened with the reveal that Negan had brutally murdered Abraham and Glenn. Our band of survivors was forced to cooperate and meet Negan’s demands or more of them would die. Negan also took Daryl, and later Eugene, as recruits for his Saviors. While Daryl managed to escape and return to Alexandria, Eugene seemed content in his new position. Meanwhile, Rick and his group secretly plotted to fight back, joining forces with some other communities that were also being oppressed and threatened by Negan. Maggie and Rosita worked on convincing the Hilltop to join them (which caused Gregory to defect to the Saviors), while Carol and Morgan befriended King Ezekiel, the tiger-loving leader of the Kingdom, and Rick made a deal with the garbage-dwelling Scavengers. However, when it came down for the showdown with Negan, the Scavengers double-crossed Rick and aided the Saviors. The Alexandrians managed to turn the tide of the battle, and Negan and his Saviors fled, but they were badly wounded and this was only the first battle is what promises to be a much bigger war.

Now that the gauntlet has been thrown, there’s no turning back for these three communities. How will they stave off Negan and the Saviors? Can they recruit others to also join their cause? While it seems like Eugene has turned against his friends, he did give Sasha the poison and had to know she was going to use it to attack Negan. Is he really a spy working in the enemy camp? It also seemed like Dwight might be willing to fight for Rick—could the two of them help to cause unrest in Negan’s army? Will Negan discover what Eugene did, and how will he react? Will we lose any more of our favorite characters this season? (I think that’s probably a given, but who?!)

While I liked Negan at first, I wish they’d just kill him already and move on to a new big villain. It seems kind of ridiculous that he treats his Saviors horribly, rules by fear, and they all hate him, and yet no one has even attempted to assassinate him in his sleep?!

On tonight’s premiere, “Mercy,” Rick and his group, along with the Kingdom and Hilltop, have banded together to bring the fight to Negan and the Saviors.

To see if Rick and his group challenge Nathan tonight, tune in to AMC at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Ten Days in the Valley, Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons, Ghosted, Family Guy, The Last Man on Earth, Good Behavior, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and White Famous.

Tonight, Syfy kicks off a new supernatural drama Superstition. The Hastings family has been secretly protecting their small town of La Rochelle, Georgia, for almost a century from evil forces known as Infernals. Isaac Hastings (Mario Van Peebles, Roots) and wife Bea (Robinne Lee, Hitch) are the proprietors of the town’s only funeral home. Ever since his boys were young, Isaac been training them to fight ghosts and demons. However, 16 years ago, an incident left youngest son Arlo dead, and first-born Calvin immediately left to join the military. Now Calvin (Brad James, Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse) has returned from Afghanistan to rejoin his father in the fight against evil. Aiding them in their efforts are forensic scientist Tilly (Tatiana Zappardino), Sheriff May Westbrook (Demetria McKinney, House of Payne) and her teenage daughter Garvey (Morgana Van Peebles, Ali), who works part-time in the funeral home. Other than May, the rest of local police department isn’t aware of what the Hastings are really up to, and she tries to keep things that way.

The premiere jumps right into the thick of things while also introducing us to the main characters as well as this mysterious small town. The details as to the nature of some of the relationships between the characters slowly unfolds, and we learn that some of them are keeping secrets or hidden motivations that will be revealed over the course of the series. The pilot sets up this spooky atmosphere that is ripe for tales of demons, spirits, and other supernatural creatures wreaking havoc on the small town. I enjoyed tonight’s premiere and look forward to seeing more of the series.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” Calvin Hastings returns home to reconnect with his family, but the reunion is cut short by a string of killings instigated by a supernatural villain only Calvin & his family can take down.

See how this new drama compares to Supernatural tonight on Syfy at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Marvel’s Inhumans, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Jane the Virgin, Ginormous Food, and Mike Judge Presents: Tales From the Tour Bus.
