Jenny’s Choice

Last week on SEAL Team, it was clear Jason was well on the mend after his surgery. Not only was he walking and running without a hitch in his stride, but he was also hitting on and then kissing Natalie. I kinda like them together, but I’m not yet sure if that’s good or bad for Jason. And while the team was overseas protecting aid convoys in an Ebola hot zone and then finding out later that they were really there to go after a new strain of the Ebola virus that had been stolen (they were NOT happy about that delay in their mission knowledge, btw…), Davis was stateside and getting into trouble. She met up with her sister, but she really seemed to have a chip on her shoulder, so the visit didn’t go very well. That sent her to a bar, where she sat and drank…and drank…and drank…by herself. And THAT caught the eye of a couple of jackasses who tried to hit on her and wouldn’t listen when she said no. They put their hands on her, so she was on high alert already, and when someone else came up behind her and put his hand on her shoulder, she reacted…well…frankly like I think she should have. She turned around and threw a punch, assuming it was another guy who was with the first two. Unfortunately for her, it was a police office, so she was arrested. Now, I doubt she’d go to jail for it after the circumstances came out about why she threw the punch, but because she’s now an officer in the military, the military may have something to say about that…and that leads us into tonight’s episode. When I first saw the pictures and episode title, I figured maybe her relationship with Sonny had come to light, but now I think it has to do with the tussle at the bar last week. Guess we’ll see!

On tonight’s episode, “Unbecoming an Officer,” Jason leads Bravo Team on his first mission back following surgery, and Ensign Davis faces disciplinary action. The episode was directed by series star and real-life veteran Tyler Grey (Trent).

If We Controlled Your Remote… 12/9/19

Phoebe’s Choice

I have no idea how to encapsulate the start of Batwoman season one better than “nah to ish.” It is OK sometimes, derivative mostly, but with Alice and Mouse revenging on estranged sister Kate not Bats v. Madhatter. The Kate Kane vs. her sister the psycho Alice scenes leads us eventually to one more of those Harrison Wells (the Indiana Jones styled version named “Nash”) “unlocking the Monitor’s secret room after finally surrendering allegiance to him” scenes. We have seen this scene in four shows now.

Unifying moment that ties the crossover together, acknowledged. Right, moving on.

Last night, CoIE as I will henceforth call it, actually launched with an episode of Supergirl.

On Earth-38, there were earthquakes at all points of the globe caused by an external force. They determined that it was an enormous antimatter wave that would soon destroy the planet. Further, the planet Argo 139, where Superman & Lois Lane had discreetly retired to raise their son John, would be destroyed by the wave momentarily. The antimatter wave soon arrived to destroy that world, and Clark & Lois sent their son in an escape pod like Dad went through so long ago. Let redundancy be redundant.

Harbinger, the newly appointed herald of the Monitor, then fetched the proverbial Fellowship. She snatched Oliver Queen and his time displaced daughter, Batwoman, Flash, and surprise surprise Supes & Lois. So they launched their son who could have been rescued, but nah, hey whatever. The Monitor told his assembled team that they were needed to guard the Quantum Tower he was activating to stop the antimatter wave. The Tower would disrupt the wave, but the Antimonitor’s forces would then show up to try to disable the power of the building.

When Oliver found out that Barry also had committed to die in this CoIE event, he called for a conference with the Monitor. Monitor revealed how many earths were at stake but did not promise Barry would live. The bulk of the team united, including a few Legends of Tomorrow, to secure the Quantum Tower. Brainiac, Lois Lane, & Sarah Lance teamed up to rescue the lost Superman baby from an alt Earth future where a Green Arrow protected him.

On Earth-38, it seemed that time wraiths were the forces of the Antimonitor, as that was who swarmed the heroes. The Tower succeeded in its function only partially: it bounced the wave back but only temporarily. When this timeline was seen to have been lost, the Monitor started pulling his heroes back from Earth-38. Oliver Queen refused and even stopped Monitor for a moment with an arrow, but in the aftermath, Arrow died. This felt fitting. The end of the Arrowverse’s birth – of an extension of itself.

We have come full circle. We are still doing the damn thing!

Finding out that Nash was the one who released the Antimoniter is #predictable in hindsight, but here we are, locked in for an EPIC four more episodes that will change DCU TV forever. No really, I mean it. The first two or three Earths that they showed in the opening of this crossover featured Titans characters and actors. This alludes to a possibility I had pointed out before. CoIE offers a chance to merge the Arrowverse & DCU. #JustSaying.

The crossover continues on tonight’s episode of Batwoman, “Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part Two,” the group uses Ray’s invention to track new recruits to help save the universe. The Monitor sends Iris, Clark, and Lois in search of a mysterious Kryptonian, while Kate and Kara head out to find Bruce Wayne. In addition, Mia challenges Sara, Rory discovers a hidden talent, and Lex Luthor returns.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 12/6/19

Kyle’s Choice

Today, Netflix releases the first half of the fifth and final season of Fuller House. As the fourth season came to a close, the She Wolf Pack went to a performance of Hamilton, but Kimmy’s water broke just as the show was about to start. So DJ and Stephanie rushed her off to the hospital. Meanwhile, Jimmy was having doubts about becoming a father (little did he know it was about to be a little too late for that), but Fernando and Max calmed his fears. As Kimmy gave birth to a baby girl, Jimmy proposed to Stephanie, who, of course, accepted—”Stephanie Tanner, you are now officially going to be a Gibbler!” Also in the waiting room were Jackson and Rocki, who had reconciled – Jackson had made fun of her at prom, but she forgave him, and during the car ride to the hospital, the two seem to have realized they still had feelings for one another.

I’ve really enjoyed this revival series, and it’s sad to think there are just 18 episodes left. What crazy situations await the Tanners and Gibblers? We know there’s at least one more wedding in the works. Will the Olsen twins actually make an appearance before it’s all over? (Seems doubtful.) How will they explain the disappearance of Aunt Becky – is it too soon to joke about her legal situation? What will Stephanie and Jimmy name their daughter? This is one of the few Netflix shows I’ve managed to keep up with, and I look forward to checking out the new episodes tonight.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Blacklist, Van Helsing, Encore!, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Servant, The Graham Norton Show, The Mandalorian, The World According to Jeff Goldblum, and Top Elf.

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, FOX kicks off the fun but also heartwarming limited holiday series, The Moodys. Dan Moody (François Arnaud, Midnight, Texas) is the youngest of the three Moody children. He moved to New York City to become a photographer but is returning home for the holidays to spend a week with his dysfunctional family. His parents, Sean (Denis Leary, Rescue Me) and Ann (Elizabeth Perkins, Sharp Objects, Weeds), were expecting to finally meet Dan’s girlfriend. However, the couple broke up just before the trip, due to Dan’s inability to commit to moving in together. Dan’s oldest sibling, Sean Jr. (Jay Baruchel, Man Seeking Woman) still lives at home with his parents. He’s a maintenance man at the local ice rink, but he has a grudge with his boss. His parents are eager for Sean to find a real job and get out of the house. Sean Sr. thought that one day his son might join him in the family heating and air conditioning business. Middle sister/lawyer Bridget (Chelsea Frei, Sideswiped), on the other hand, appears to have it all together – but there’s a secret she’s been keeping from her husband that is about to throw her world into chaos. Speaking of chaos, Ann Moody just wants to be able to relax, but Sean has hired some underqualified guys from his AA group to renovate the master bathroom – a project that has no end in sight. With the holiday quickly approaching, Ann is eager to get their house back in order. Meanwhile Sean has a major secret that he’s been keeping from his children, which could put a major damper on the holiday celebration.

The Moodys have a list of traditional activities planned for the week leading up to Christmas, many of which involve the oddball extended family. The first event is a welcome home party for Dan, where the guest of honor has a meet-cute with Cora (María Gabriela de Faría, Deadly Class). There is instant chemistry between the two, but the only problem is that Cora is dating Dan’s cousin Marcos (Josh Segarra, Orange Is the New Black, Arrow). Marcos can be an obnoxious Bro at times, but he’s still Dan’s best friend, and Dan couldn’t do that to his best friend…or could he? And this is just the start of what is going to be quite the crazy week for the Moodys.

The Moodys is based on an Australian series. In that show, each episode followed a consecutive family holiday get-together. However, in the US version, the events take place over just one week, with each episode covering one day of the holiday adventures of the Moody family. As the family members try to partake in their various holiday traditions, things go comedically and disastrously wrong. However, no matter what the holidays throw at them, the Moodys always manage to stick together. I was expecting more of a wild, irreverent comedy, but the series has a surprising amount of heart. The six-episode series will air across three nights, with two back-to-back 30-minute episodes each night. The story plays out like one long movie, though there is usually some event with family or friends that is the focus of each episode. The cast is amazing – they feel like they could actually be a family – and they are joined by some fun side characters, such as the talkative uncle, the bumbling underqualified contractors, Sean’s rival AC installers, and Bridgitte’s old high school friend/high school wrestling coach Monty (Kevin Bigley, Sirens), who still pines over her a decade later.

On tonight’s premiere, “Pilot; Episode 2,” freshly single, Dan returns to his childhood home for Christmas to find it’s in various stages of disarray; Dan meets and instantly clicks with Cora, but she’s dating his cousin; Bridget returns to her childhood home after a fight with her husband.

Kyle’s Choice

Just when you thought you’d seen the last of the Dreamworks Dragons franchise, NBC is bringing back Hiccup (Jay Baruchel), Astrid (America Ferrera), Stoick (Gerard Butler), Gobber (Craig Ferguson), Fishlegs (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), and more of your favorite characters for the all-new animated holiday special, How to Train Your Dragon Homecoming.

This new tale is set 10 years after the end of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, just before that film’s epilogue. The latest generation of Vikings in New Berk hasn’t grown up with dragons and are unaware of the great bond that had once existed between dragons and humans. So as New Berk prepares to celebrate the Snoggletog Festival, Hiccup decides to put on a pageant to celebrate the dragons, which leads to some fun and exciting moments.

How to Train Your Dragon is probably my favorite animated franchise, so I’m excited that we are going to get a new story set in this world, especially with the original voice cast reprising their roles! I am really looking forward to checking out tonight’s holiday special.
