My pick tonight is actually two shows, both family competition shows premiering on BYUtv. First is the comedic game show Battle of the Ages, which pits two multi-generational family teams (grandparent, parent, child/teen) against each other in mental and physical challenges. It looks a little bit like Double Dare but with a few twists and just looks like a lot of fun.

Following that is the premiere of Dinner Takes All, a family cooking competition show hosted by celebrity chef Kelsey Nixon. Like several other shows, one of which is currently airing on Food Network, two teams of family members go head-to-head. In this one, it’s families of five who have to cook their “best Sunday dinner.” Each team uses family recipes to create an entrée, three side dishes, and a dessert while simultaneously playing interactive food-centric games for bonus points. Winning families receive a $10,000 cash prize. So it isn’t just a cooking show. There are fun games as well.

On tonight’s episode of Battle of the Ages, “Sanchez vs. Perkey,” grandparents get hints from pilot Lucky Lindenburger in a race to name the state he’s flying over.

Then on Dinner Takes All, “LoRusso Family vs. Castleberry Family,” the LoRusso and Castleberry families cook meals while playing games to win $10,000.

Catch all the fun tonight on BYUtv starting at 8:30/7:30c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing The Goldbergs, Schooled, Gone, Guy’s Grocery Games, Modern Family, Single Parents, Whiskey Cavalier, & SEAL Team.

I love me some cooking competitions – and that includes ones like tonight’s new Buddy vs. Duff on Food Network. Buddy Valastro (the Cake Boss) and Duff Goldman (the Ace of Cakes) are both elite bakers, and in this new series, they face off in a baking battle for the chance to be crowned the undisputed king of cheeses – oh, no, that’s Parmigiano-Reggiano. They’re competing to be crowned the undisputed kind of cake. There are two rounds in each episode, like most cooking competitions of this vein, and they’ll be judged by renowned chefs Sherry Yard and Keegan Gerhard, as well as a rotating cast of guest experts, such as Hannah Hart, Aarti Sequeira, Penn & Teller, Florian Bellanger, and many more.

On tonight’s episode, “The Battle Begins,” in the first of six bake-off challenges, Buddy Valastro and Duff Goldman must make their most beloved family recipes; the chefs create car-inspired birthday cakes for celebrity gearhead Richard Rawlings.

See who…takes the cake on tonight’s premiere on Food Network at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Family Food Showdown & Private Eyes.

My pick for tonight is the series premiere of Gone on WGN America. As of last month, there’s a chilling statistic in the US, according to WGN America: 83,957 people are missing in the US at any given moment. Chris Noth (Law & Order, Sex and the City), Leven Rambin (The Path, True Detective), & Danny Pino (Law & Order: SVU, Mayans M.C.) star in a missing person’s detective procedural that follows the story of Kit “Kick” Lannigan (Rambin), the survivor of a famous child-abduction case, and Frank Novak (Noth), the FBI agent who rescued her. Years later, Novak is running a special task force dedicated to solving abductions and missing person’s cases, and he recruits Lannigan to join. She’s paired with former Army intelligence officer John Bishop (Pino) and uses her intuitive wit and martial arts skills to solve cases and bring victims home. The show also stars Tracie Thomas (UnREAL, 9-1-1) and Andy Mientus (The Flash, Anger Management).

I love detective procedurals, and I love Chris Noth and Danny Pino. I’ve liked Leven Rambin in everything I’ve seen her in (guest starring spots for me, mostly), so hopefully I’ll enjoy her in this. I hope the show focuses on cases (like a case of the week) more than a dramatic story about Novak or Bishop suddenly being a bad guy. I guess we’ll have to wait and see!

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” FBI Agent Frank Novak seeks out former abductee Kick Lannigan and asks her to join him in a special task force that solves abductions and missing persons cases.

To meet Novak and Lannigan, tune in to WGN America at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Chicago Med, The Goldbergs, Schooled, Chicago FIre, Guy’s Grocery Games, Modern Family, Single Parents, Chicago PD, & a repeat of Whiskey Cavalier.

Last week on the penultimate episode of season two of The Gifted, in many ways they were just dealing with the aftermath of the prior “Mutant Massacre” episode in which the Purifiers wiped out dozens of Morlocks in a desperate battle that left Blink wounded and separated from the team. We saw that Lorna was ready to betray the Inner Circle as Reeva’s plans were revealed. Strucker patriarch, Reed Strucker, accidentally killed a Purifier as everyone was scrambling for an escape. Caitlin Strucker & daughter Lauren Strucker got holed up in an old brick building at just the wrong moment: Lauren’s powers were still suppressed from the “cure” that had been developed.

Jayce Turner, who was still grieving over the fact that he’d led men into a battle in which they slaughtered women, children, and non-combatants, encountered another shock – he saw security footage that confirmed Blink and Thunderbird were alive before the battle started. When Lorna discovered that Reeva hired the Purifiers to kill the Morlocks, Lorna was able to convince Andy to defect as well. But Andy was scared that his family would not accept him back after he’d done so much evil. But Reed confessed to Andy that he recently killed a man and put Andy slightly at ease. They all have demons, after all.

Andy & Lorna made it back to the rest of the team, and there was a touching reunion. Eclipse, Lorna, and their baby will be together if we get a season three. Yay! We learned that Reeva wasn’t that pissed that they lost Lorna and Andy, revealing she mostly wanted the “Inner Circle cred” their family history would have brought her. She was ready to kill them if she must.

We still don’t know where the hell Blink is. This show is not renewed, and I am given to understand that this episode was written as a tragic cliffhanger. I almost expect Thunderbird to die or maybe Lorna’s baby? There’s also a last-minute twist ending promised that may intro a new mutant or faction. I almost hope for some time-traveling mutants from Age of Apocalypse or some other classic X-Men storyline, orrrrrrr… Okay, oddly specific pitch, but how bout Clarice (Blink) dies but shows back up as her AoA leader of the Exiles version? I guess we’ll see tonight. If for some reason Fox axes this show, I’ll be pissed, because it’s been a pretty solid run and Matt Nix is a good storyteller.

On tonight’s episode, “oMens,” Reeva prepares to carry out her plan for the Inner Circle, but not everyone is on the same page; Reed struggles to manage his powers; Jace and the Purifiers are on the attack.

Check out the season (series?) finale tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be tuning in for another season finale that could actually turn out to be a series finale: Lethal Weapon.

We get two episodes of Hawaii Five-0 tonight – the second directed by series star Alex O’Loughlin. Fun! But first…let’s talk about last week’s episode, which was exciting because it coupled a hurricane with a drug lord being hunted by an assassin. Steve was especially unhappy hearing that the drug lord was going to be brought to Iolani Palace to wait out the storm, not only because of all the civilians who were taking shelter there but because he knew a family that had been killed by one of the bad guy’s bombs. He felt a little better later on after learning the guy was turning State’s evidence about rival cartels. Unfortunately, they almost lost him when they figured out an assassin from one of those rival cartels had snuck in to hunt him down and take him out – with the assistance of one of the FBI team escorting the bad guy. And that assassin stabbed a young deputy. We never did learn if that poor guy lived or died. As for the assassin and the drug lord, the assassin was killed and the drug lord tried to escape, nearly getting killed by the wrong FBI agent, but the team saved him and then took him back into custody.

As for the rest of the team… Tani & Junior were sent out into the early bits of the storm to help rescue any stranded civilians or anyone who was refusing to evacuate the required evac zones. Unfortunately for Tani, she stumbled into a stash house and got tied up, only to talk the guy’s kid into untying her. Then she learned what the place was, right before the even worse bad guys showed up to get to the money (and drugs?) kept there at the house, and she had the family (the ones who had originally tied her up) hide in the closet while she took on the three guys alone. She was just about to have to fight it out with the last one after running out of ammunition, but Junior showed up just in time and shot the guy. And then there was Danny…who stayed safe at his house with Rachel and Charlie (Grace was on a college tour or something in California.). Why Danny was able to stay home when they were so busy at the Palace, I don’t know. But whatever. There were a lot of sparks between Rachel and Danny, so we’ll see if they’re leading them to get back together this season or not.

On tonight’s first episode, “Hapai ke kuko, hanau ka hewa (When Covetousness is Conceived, Sin is Born),” when the top salesperson for a beauty company/pyramid scheme is murdered, Five-0 sifts through a long list of possible suspects who would want her dead. Also, Adam befriends a homeless man estranged from his family. Matthew Lawrence guest stars.

Then on the second episode, “E’ao lu’au a kualima (Offer Young Taro Leaves To),” Junior is torn between his duties as a member of Five-0 and his feelings for his former girlfriend when her new love, the father of her son, is one of the culprits in a bank-heist-turned-homicide. J.J. Soria guest stars.

Don’t miss a fun two hours in Hawaii tonight on CBS starting at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Last Man Standing, MacGyver, The Cool Kids, & Proven Innocent.
