With almost three seasons done in Preacher, we’ve seen an interesting adaptation of a road trip comic book converted to a show set alternately in a small Texas town, New Orleans, & an idyllic swamp haunt called Angelville. The last locale is where title character Jesse Custer was raised by his voodoo-wielding evil Grandma, who is one of several “bad guys” this year. And Jesse likely would have wiped her out as a threat, had Herr Star and his goons in The Grail organization not extracted Jesse’s soul a while back. Without a soul, he had been unable to use the power of Genesis inside him that makes his commands act affect others like the word of God.

God, btw, is still running around doing something depraved in a vinyl dog suit, motorcycling the country with his hot girlfriend. And Cassidy the Irish vampire has been off on his own for half the season, dealing with a cult led by another much more sadistic and powerful vampire named Eccarius. Cassidy tries to warn the cult members who are really just food being fattened for Eccarius to slaughter them, but they believe their leader instead. They beat Cassidy up and leave him crucified on an upright pool table, awaiting the sun’s beams to burn him out of existence.

The last cliff they left us hung on was the bus ride back to hell as overseen by the Angel of Death. Teamed up with the super badass Saint of Killers, a Confederate soldier turned demon cowboy, Angel of Death had acquired the three people Satan sent her to get: Eugene, Hitler, & Tulip. Just as Tulip had been about to try an escape, Hitler instead kicked his way out the window and dove directly onto a landmine in 1940’s WWII. This flipped the bus and left them all stranded in the past!! I can’t wait to see how they finish it all tonight.

On tonight’s episode, “The Light Above,” Jesse returns home for what he hopes is the last time but in doing so angers Starr and endangers Cassidy. Meanwhile, Tulip battles Hell and Nazis.

Find out who prevails in tonight’s finale on AMC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching Get Shorty and The Venture Bros.

One of the breakout late summer shows for me last year was Get Shorty. And the last two weeks, they’ve come back strong. After we found out in the premiere that the director’s cut of the film they were all trying to profit off of, The Admiral’s Mistress, was absolute shite, Miles was left to edit the film. He went on a 40 hour Adderall-fueled editing frenzy. April had switched studios, so she was off this film. Louis, limited by his Mormon religion, proposed marriage to Gladys so they could include sex in dating. She agreed eventually but on the condition that they keep it secret. Amara was feeling the pressure from the L.A. cartel at the same time she was trying to find out how there was a bug planted in her home.

Meanwhile, Yago plotted a big robbery to help pay off Amara’s debts. He coordinated a break-in that got into a sealed safe filled with old movie costumes and props. The best line of the episode may have been: “What’s a Maltese Falcon? Has anyone ever heard of this shit?” He then broke the falcon, thinking it no big deal. Miles’s wife finally gave him the long-awaited divorce papers, but they came with a surprise. She was seeking full custody of their daughter Emma. Amara finally pinned the housekeeper as the culprit that let in the electrician who bugged her house. She has her guys “take care of her.”

Late in the edit process, April showed up to help Miles on her off time. They finally got a watchable cut complete. Then the two totally bumped uglies. And I had been waiting for that since halfway through season one, so yay! While he couldn’t stand to watch it, at the screening of Miles’s cut, Ricky assured him he took a 1 and turned it to a solid 5. The film was marketable now. Miles then lost his chance to produce the new film he was trying to make because he was ID’d as the guy who publicly strong-armed a member of that particular studio the previous episode. He then went and git drunk and sped down an empty road. Until he crashed the car and wrecked it. He awoke a few minutes later though and decided to walk it off.

This iteration of Get Shorty is both hilarious and action packed. It is only loosely similar to the movie/book it was based on, and it manages to create its own definitive feel. #StrongRecommend

On tonight’s episode, “Selenite,” Miles finds himself off the grid at a strange motel; Rick and Amara attend the premiere for “The Admiral’s Mistress,” while Louis, Ed and Yago keep an eye on the movie’s star actor.

I’ll also be tuning into see what Spence and the guys are up to on Ballers, what silliness is afoot on The Venture Bros, & Who Is America?.

That feeling when you remember that your favorite action movie star also stars in an HBO comedy-drama? Yipeeeeeeeee!!! That was me last week when I realized season four of Ballers, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson & Rob Corddry as a pair of financial managers who manage the money and careers of pro football stars. Last season revolved around a huge campaign to get an NFL team to move to Las Vegas, where business magnate Wayne Hastings Jr. was working to expand his already impressive casino empire. Just before the finale we found out Hastings had divested himself from AFM, Spencer’s firm, and was working instead with Candace, who sat in much better favor with the board of NFL owners.

Last year’s finale signaled to us the general direction of the show, a move to California. Ricky & Charles took a flight to L.A. together, where they had diverging goals. Ricky was there to chase after the woman he loved, Amber. Charles was there to interview for the General Manager position of the L.A. Chargers. At first Charles bumbled his way through it, but then he broke through and it seemed like he was going to get the gig. Ricky went to Amber’s mom’s house, where he told her he was ready to give up football entirely and raise their child together.

Meanwhile up in San Francisco at the owner’s meeting, Team AFM had flown in Anderson’s brother with the big bucks to bid on the move to Vegas. Hastings’ team went first and the owners liked their pitch. But then Spencer hit the meeting with an onside kick when he suggested in an impassioned speech that the Raiders should stay in Oakland. And that they deserved a new stadium, one built with Julian Anderson’s private money, not the 700 million the taxpayers in Vegas had agreed to pay. He punctuated the well-articulated pitch by drawing the owners’ attentions to the huge crowd he’d organized to assemble in the streets below. They chanted their support for the Raiders. Later that night, they got the news that the owners decided to move the team to Vegas, but they did want ASM to finance the stadium construction with Julian’s money.

So tonight we start with season four and a definite shift to L.A. & Vegas as the setting for the show. Can’t wait to see where this one goes!

On tonight’s episode, “Rough Ride,” Spencer and Joe weigh the pros and cons of acquiring an extreme-sport agency. Ricky sets down roots in LA with Amber and their daughter but finds himself yearning for something else. Charles rallies a group of disgruntled employees as he begins his new tenure with the Rams.

Find out how the new season goes tonight on HBO at 10/9c.

I’ll also be tuning in for my other new late summer fav, Preacher.

Last week’s penultimate episode of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger season one took an interesting approach to its unfolding, bringing us back into the world of Tyrone’s love interest Evita. The whole ep was framed around lectures Evita was taking notes on in school about “heroes.” Also, her Aunt Chantelle, the voodooienne who warned her niece that Roxxon Corporation will destroy all of New Orleans unless the “divine pairing” of Tyrone & Tandy can stop them.

But of course they were caught up in their own drama movies: Tandy has learned not only can she see people’s greatest hope, she can also take it from their mind as well, while Tyrone dealt with the fact that the corrupt cop who killed his brother had gotten off the hook for the murder againnnnn. Tandy finally bailed Liam out of jail but only to steal his greatest hope: getting married to her. His love for her gone, he stole her cash stash and skipped town ASAP. Tyrone meanwhile was now the target of Connors, his brother’s killer. The corrupt cop turned to treachery again and falsely accused Tyrone of murder, leading dozens of NOPD to come knocking on his door. Same time, crosstown? Tandy was dealing with an assassin at her mom’s pad. Both storylines ended on cliffhanger moments, setting the stage for a wild finale tonight.

This show was been rock solid, one of the best in the MCU so far, up there with The Gifted & Legion. The young thespians playing Tandy and Tyrone are promising, and season 2 is already confirmed. So if you have never seen it yet, start binging now or wait for it to hit ‘flix, cause this one is a rewarding, twisting tale of two teens cursed or blessed with powers that somehow tie their very souls together.

On tonight’s season finale, “Colony Collapse,” everything comes to a head for Tyrone and Tandy as the city of New Orleans is thrown into chaos. The two realize that it is time they face their destiny and test their powers as the “Divine Pairing” to save the city.

See how the season ends tonight on Freeform at 8/7c.

Other than this tonight, I’m just working on my binge of the first two seasons of Preacher, ’cause holy f*** that show is nuts, as it turns out.

Early this morning, Netflix released all of the episodes of the sixth season of Orange is the New Black. Last season, the series took a unique approach, with the entire season taking place over the course of just 3 days, as the Litchfield inmates rioted for better living conditions after the accidental death of inmate/friend Poussey. After days of trying to negotiate with the prisoners, CERT sent in a tactical team to squelch the uprising. Meanwhile, Red tried to lure former CO Piscatella into a trap to get her revenge. However, he discovered what she was up to and entered the prison on his own, where he held Alex, Piper, Red, and some others hostage. The women eventually managed to turn the tables on Piscatella, but the CERT team found Freida’s hidden bunker just as he was trying to leave, and they shot him, thinking he was an armed assailant in the haze of the smoke bombs they had released.

During the riot, Maritza and Flaca had bonded making their YouTube prison-style videos. However, they were upset to discover that all of the Litchfield inmates were being gathered onto buses to be redistributed to other prisons while the riot aftermath was cleaned up…and the two of them had been placed on different buses. Meanwhile, Leanne and Angie set fire to all of the prisoner records; Lorna discovered she was pregnant, and her boyfriend professed his love; and Pennsatucky managed to escape from prison and made her way to the home of her CO boyfriend. Back in the bunker, Red, Freida, the newly-engaged Piper and Alex, and some other inmates locked arms, bracing themselves for the unknown as the CERT team entered the room with guns locked and loaded.

I’m looking forward to seeing where things open in the new season and how this affects the main characters we have followed for five seasons. Will our group be separated from one another? Is Litchfield no more? Will we jump ahead to after things have been cleaned up from the riots? Or have the women been sent to a new prison/prisons, and if so, how will the environment/character dynamics be different?

Check out the entire sixth season streaming now on Netflix.

I’ll also be watching/recording Welcome to the Family, The Great British Baking Show, Wynonna Earp, Killjoys, and Outcast.
