Tonight on HBO, an exciting new comic book show debuts, though this rendition of Watchmen is not strictly an adaptation so much as an addition to the existing canon of the award-winning Vertigo comic book story from the 1980s. Most of the original 12-issue limited series was successfully adapted to a film a decade ago, with the few missing parts being available as bonus features on the DVD. Widely regarded as the best comic book tale ever told, that movie version is a tough act to replicate, so they went a different direction with it.

They set this show in the same universe as the film, but instead of the OG setting in the 1980s, they are running this continuity in a modern age of sorts. It is the 2019 of an Earth that lived through the events of The Watchmen, however. It’s a world torn by racial tension and tension between the police and the growing racist hordes who support president Robert Redford, who has sat in office for thirty years. One that sees occasional rainstorm of live squid pouring down. (Swear.) The lead vigilante hero in this arc will be an African American woman who fights crime as Sister Night. Everything I’ve heard about this one sounds trippy, morbidly funny, and apropos of many dismal aspects of our modern history. I’m in for the whole season, however it turns out. My blood-splattered Comedian’s button on my sweatshirt won’t let me miss an episode!

On tonight’s episode, “It’s Summer and We’re Running Out of Ice,” in an alternate America, where police conceal their identities behind masks to protect themselves from a terrorist organization, Detective Angela Abar (Regina King) investigates the attempted murder of a fellow officer under the guidance of her friend and Chief, Judd Crawford (Don Johnson). Meanwhile, the Lord of a Country Estate (Jeremy Irons) receives an anniversary gift from his loyal servants.

Don’t miss this exciting new show tonight on HBO at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching Get Shorty, On Becoming a God in Central Florida (which I suspect many of you are still sleeping on), & Bob’s Burgers.

Tonight, Supergirl returns to The CW to kick off its fifth season. As the fourth season came to close, Supergirl was up against Lex Luthor, who had made himself look like the hero, “saving” the country from an alien attack, and using Red Daughter to try to kill Supergirl. For his heroism, the president had named Lex the new Director of Alien Affairs. However, it turned out that Lex was harnessing the aliens’ powers to create batteries, which he planned to utilize to blow up the planet Argus, along with Superman. It was up to Supergirl to expose Lex’s evil plan, which she did as Kara via a written expose. However, Lex was still moving forward with his plan, and the group gathered to stop him from launching his weapon. Meanwhile, Ben Lockwood also showed up, looking to fight Supergirl. During the commotion, Red Daughter took a blast of Kryptonite while trying to protect Supergirl and was killed. Supergirl reabsorbed her clone, and this extra burst of power allowed her to blast Lex and his Lexosuit, sending him hurdling toward Earth. He managed to create a portal into his lap before he exploded into the Earth. However, Lena showed up and shot Lex. As he lay dying, Lex revealed Kara’s big secret to Lena, who was shocked and felt betrayed. In the final moments of the episode, The Monitor arrived through a portal, greeting a Green Martian, who was plotting revenge on his brother, J’onn J’onzz. We then saw The Monitor hovering over Lex’s cold body… It looks like this will not be the end for Lex!

So how will learning Kara’s secret change Lena? Will she turn to the dark side with her brother? Will she plot some kind of revenge against Supergirl? When will she tell Kara that she knows? What new villains and threats await Supergirl and her DEO/superhero crew this season?

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, I got the chance to talk about the series with some of the executive producers and cast members. You can watch my interview videos from the press room at NoReruns.net.

On tonight’s premiere, “Event Horizon,” Kara is surprised to find that CatCo has a new owner who has brought in a star reporter; new couples emerge and explore their budding relationships; J’onn J’onzz receives an unexpected visitor.

Find out who now owns CatCo and who visits J’onn J’onzz tonight on The CW at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Rookie, The Simpsons, Bless the Harts, Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, Batwoman, The Walking Dead, Mr. Robot, and Succession.

Hawaii Five-0 is back tonight, and I’m so anxious to see what happened after last season’s finale, when Steve was supposedly shot. Most of the finale was all about hunting down Aaron Wright, which involved him hacking the emergency alert system to cause panic that there was an incoming missile in order for him to get away. But they figured out where he was headed – a private airfield – and though they didn’t get there in time to stop him, Jerry brilliantly hacked the plane’s systems and caused it to start losing fuel. Rather than crash and burn, Wright turned the plane around and landed…right into police custody. That leads us back to the gunshot at Five-0 headquarters.

Omar Hassan’s wife wanted to come by with her young son to make “amends” for her husband’s reign of terror and end the cycle of violence. The visit seemed to go well, but on the way out, she shoved her kid off to the side, pulled out a white plastic gun, and fired it in Steve’s direction off-camera.

So was Steve shot? Did someone else jump in front of the bullet? From the description of tonight’s episode, it sure seems like someone maybe died, but I haven’t heard of anyone leaving…so who knows! Also, Katrina Law joins the cast as Quinn Liu.

On tonight’s episode, “Ua ’eha ka ’ili i ka maka o ka ihe (Hawaiian for ‘The skin has been hurt by the point of the spear’),” a new ally helps McGarrett and Five-0 when mob bosses on the island are being targeted by an assassin. Also, Five-0 says goodbye to one of their own. Rob Morrow guest stars.

Don’t miss it tonight on CBS at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching The Great British Baking Show, American Housewife, & Blue Bloods.

My first pick tonight is the series premiere of Evil. If you know me, you know I’m not at all into dramas or even most supernatural shows, but this is different. It’s a bit of a cop drama mixed with the supernatural, and I couldn’t help but watch when they made the screeners available.

From Michelle & Robert King (The Good Wife/The Good Fight & BrainDead), this is a psychological mystery that examines the origins of evil along the dividing line between science and religion. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers) is a skeptical psychologist basically single mother of four (her husband is off supervising climbing tours of some big mountain overseas, so he’s rarely home). She starts off the show as an expert witness for the District Attorney, but after being pushed to lie on the stand, she quits and a little reluctantly joins forces with David Acosta (Mike Colter), a former adventure-seeking journalist now studying to be a priest and tasked by the Church to assess unexplained phenomena – possessions, miracles, etc. Their job is to figure out if it’s supernatural or if there’s a logical explanation. Along with Kristen and David is Ben Shakir, another skeptic who uses his computer and carpentry skills to figure out/prove that what seems to be supernatural is, in reality, something done by humans or naturally in the environment.

Kristen begins having night terrors, which are SUPER freaky, and one of the more scary characters is Leland Townsend, a man who (CBS’s words but oh so appropriate) “oozes menace” and threatens Kristen and her daughters. David tries to tell Kristen that Townsend is in reality evil, but she doesn’t believe it…until she does. The road to that is spooky and creepy and…everything good that is this show.

I’ve seen the first few episodes already, and it’s scared the pants off me. I loved it way more than I thought I was going to, so I highly recommend at least checking out the first couple of episodes! Also starring are Christine Lahti, Kurt Fuller, Brooklyn Shuck, Dalya Knapp, Maddy Crocco, & Skylar Gray.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” forensic psychologist Kristen Bouchard is hired by the Catholic Church to work with David Acosta, a priest-in-training, and contractor Ben Shakir, to determine whether a serial killer is possessed by a demon or merely a psychopath. Kristen finds that she has a taste for the work and is invited to join the team on a permanent basis.

Don’t miss the premiere tonight on CBS at 10/9c.

My first pick tonight is the new ABC drama Stumptown, starring Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother). Based on the “Stumptown” graphic novel series, the show follows Dex Parios, a strong, assertive, and sharp-witted army veteran with a complicated love life, gambling debt, and a brother to take care of in Portland, Oregon. Her military intelligence skills make her a great PI, but her unapologetic style puts her in the firing line of hardcore criminals and not quite in alliance with the police. The previews look great. Dex is a smart-mouthed smartass and I think she’s going to be someone we can all root for. I like the rest of the cast too: Michael Ealy (Almost Human, Suspect, Sleeper Cell), Camryn Manheim (Person of Interest, The Practice), Jake Johnson (New Girl), Adrian Martinez (The Blacklist: Redemption), plus Tantoo Cardinal and newcomer Cole Sibus.

Be sure to watch tonight’s episode, “Forget It Dex, It’s Stumptown,” on ABC at 10/9c.
