If We Controlled Your Remote… 9/18/22

Hey hey! Welcome back to the If We Controlled Your Remote… posts! I know it’s been a minute. The last couple of seasons have been crazy weird, but I have high hopes that this season is going to be back to normal. To keep that hope alive, I thought bringing the Remote posts back today to celebrate the start of the new season. Kyle & Megan will be back to join me later this week, so strap in, because here we go!

Jenny’s Choice

I have been waiting on pins and needles for the SEAL Team season premiere since last season’s finale, and I know I’m not alone. The finale was the most stressful season ender we’ve seen the entire series. It started off great. Jason and Mandy got things back on track, and he even made up with his daughter over her living with her boyfriend. Clay finally got to hold his baby, and he & Stella even got to take Brian home – and with Stella’s help, Clay & Sonny, who had been on the outs, finally made up. Davis learned that the paper she’d written that could have tanked her career actually ended up being a good thing. The only bad thing was Ray learned that the homeless vet he and his family had been helping had died of an overdose, and bad news for fans, Clay told Jason that he was stepping back from Bravo for a while, transferring to the Green Team so he could spend more time with Stella and his son.

The team was then sent back to Mali, and while riding in two vehicles, they were ambushed – and that’s putting it mildly. Jason was shot in the shoulder, and Clay got shrapnel to his eye. QRF was too far away to be any help, and Bravo was getting their butts kicked, having to hide behind the vehicles, and that was most definitely not working.

The kicker? The camera kept panning back and forth between the chaotic battle with Bravo and the baby shower back at home for Stella. The difference between the two scenes was insane. Given that the series hadn’t been picked up at that point, it would have made a horrid series finale! Luckily, it WAS picked up, and tonight we finally get a resolution to the questions surrounding Bravo. Will they all survive? Will all of the explosions and gunfire do more harm to Jason, who is already having the memory issues and everything from his years of combat? I can’t wait to find out!

If We Controlled Your Remote… 2/1/21

Phoebe’s Choice

I was surprised but pleased last week to discover Snowpiercer is back already. Season one ended with “Big Alice” – a 40-car supply train – linking up with the 994-car Snowpiercer – a train that is escaping the doom of icy apocalypse that has befallen the rest of the world by staying in constant motion for seven years in a straight loop around North America. Inside the Snowpiercer, the disenfranchised had successfully thrown a revolution against the rich people that live in the forward cars. But now in season two, the designer of the train, Mr. Wilford, is a real threat on his supply train Big Alice with the ability to stop and freeze out the larger Snowpiercer when he chooses.

The premier started with the Snowpiercer’s engineer, Melanie, going under the stopped train to physically cut off Wilford’s uplink to the larger train’s systems. An emissary from Wilford demanded a list of items before they’d start the train back and spare them icy death. When Melanie made it back into the train, she was on Alice, where she spoke with Wilford. She refused to submit the larger Snowpiercer to him, telling him instead that Layton controlled the train now, having won his revolution. Melanie then saw that her daughter Alexandra, presumed dead, had been with Wilford the last seven years. Alex had been turned against her mother ideologically and ordered her taken to the brig.

Meanwhile, Layton and his wife got a cush new living area in First Class because she is pregnant and he is the defacto “president” in the emerging democracy his revolt was trying to establish. Wilford’s doctors easily healed Melanie’s frostbite with synthetic medicine called “goop.” Layton decided to strike at Wilford quickly before he got a chance to make his next move. At first, they took a few cars and succeed in kidnapping one of Big Alice’s hospitality workers, Kevin, hoping to gain leverage. Wilford responded by sending in a crazy cold resistant cyborg beast called “Bob” to suppress the surging attackers.

In response to the attack, Wilford dropped anchor and was going to leave the whole Snowpiercer to freeze to death. However, Melanie revealed that she had sabotaged the point where the two trains are permanently attached, so his threat to leave them to freeze was nullified. Wilford had no choice but to start them moving again.

On tonight’s episode, “Smolder to Life,” an exchange is made between the two trains, but a far greater revelation might be just over the horizon.

I’ll also be tuning in for Shameless, Batwoman, The Watch, & American Gods. I’ll also watch A Perfect Planet at some point this week. Sunday is just the best night for TV these days.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/24/21

Phoebe’s Choice

Last year’s debut season of Batwoman did not impress me. They chose Kate’s psycho but decidedly non-superpowered sister Beth, who personifies herself as Alice, leader of the Wonderland gang, as the Big Bad. Batwoman barely battled any actual super villains the entire season. When CoV19 caused the season to be truncated by two episodes, I didn’t even care. I was like “you can just not do any other episodes ever and that’d be OK.” I saw Ruby Rose, who played Kate, left the show between seasons and that she was being replaced by Javicia Leslie, who would take over as Batwoman. I was just befuddled on that, not realizing Leslie was playing a different woman who would become Batwoman. I thought that Kate was suddenly gonna turn into a black woman. Last week’s season two premiere cleared it all up for me, and I actually look forward to this season now.

The episode opened with Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie) witnessing a plane wreck just outside the van she lives in (down by the river). She rescued a man and found the Batwoman suit. She decided to keep it and fled the scene. Meanwhile, Alice followed through on planting Arkham escapee Tommy Elliot into present-day Gotham posing as Bruce Wayne, as he now wears Bruce’s face. He was basically able to walk right into his house, get Luke Fox to open the Batcave for him, and then walk out with the Kryptonite bullet that can penetrate the Batsuit (for some reason).

Luke & Mary soon tracked down Ryan, who told them the Wonderland gang killed her mom and left her to be framed with drugs that put her in jail. So she’ll be keeping the suit until she brings down Alice. Elliot, deciding he likes the Bruce Wayne identity, betrayed Alice’s location to the chief of police/her dad. When Elliot ran into Julia Pennyworth at the precinct, she immediately sussed that he was an impostor, got his fingerprints off a glass, and then IDed him. She told Luke & Mary, but by that time Elliot had already stolen the Batmobile and was homing in on Ryan to steal the suit from her. There was a delightfully ridiculous car chase through an amusement park at night that ended in a hand-to-hand confrontation. Elliot managed to shoot Ryan with the Kryotonite bullet, but she literally beat his face off despite the wound. She decided to give the suit back to Luke & Mary.

In a series of closure scenes, both Jacob (Kate’s dad) and Sophie (Kate’s lover) were told she was Batwoman. A note from Safiyah, international criminal and super villain, indicated that she killed Kate, giving Alice a reason to live again. She curled up with Mouse’s corpse and starts to plan her revenge on the woman who killed Kate before she could. In the very last scene, we saw that the Kryptonite bullet wound in Ryan’s chest was glowing, indicating she’ll either be infected or empowered by it. Who knows, who cares? I like this show for the first time, and that’s what matters.

Best moment of the S2 premiere was when the new Batwoman was shaking down two hoodlums for leads on Alice’s location, she accidentally launched a bolas attack that incapacitated the one guy. She went on to threaten the other guy, “I don’t even know what this button does. Wanna find out together?”

On tonight’s episode, “Prior Criminal History,” after her quick spin in the Batgear, Ryan is back to facing the daily challenges of life as herself. Meanwhile, Alice has a new, devious plan to get the attention of both Gotham and Safiyah. With Kate still missing and the city in an uprising, Luke and Mary are desperate to find a stand in. In a pinch, Ryan dons the suit again and comes face-to-face with Alice for the first time. Back at Crows Headquarters, Sophie and Commander Kane try to uncover who may have had a vendetta against Kate.

I’ll also be tuning in for American Gods, which is doing good things with the slowest part of the book, and Shameless.

Phoebe’s Choice

Hey, everyone. I’m back for at least one blog! Wear a mask and don’t cough on me, thank you very much, but OK I’m back because so is Shameless. The eleventh and final season of the American version of the show starts tonight on Showtime in its usual 9PM Sunday night slot. With the way things ended last year, a number of plots remain that need to be resolved, though other matters will be covered as well. When we last saw the Gallaghers, it was wedding bells for Ian & Mickey, a roller-coaster love that has been central to the show since season one. The main obstacle to that love is Mickey’s homicidally homophobic dad, Terry, who has sworn to kill Mickey if he marries a man.

We found out early that he was pretty committed to that, as he burnt down the venue the wedding was supposed to be at. While dealing with a love triangle between Debbie, Mickey’s sister, & the underaged and insane Julia, the family somehow secured the polka hall, The Polish Doll. Did I say somehow? Cause I meant: they lied and said Debbie was marrying Mickey because the place had a very homophobic history. Debbie cried to the widow who ran the hall as they pulled off the ceremony, while Gay Jesus followers detered Terry when he showed up looking to shoot someone. We found out that Kevin had been saving a secret stash of money from his Keg Exercise side hustle to buy a wedding ring for Viv. So new wedding this year, I’d think.

After a huge blow-out screaming match in front of their baby, Fred, Lip, & Tami walked away in anger for the umpteenth time. This fight rocked him bad enough that he fell off the wagon and got drunk on rum. He did the right thing though and went to see his AA sponsor/brother-in-law immediately. Somehow that humanity was enough to get Tami to show up the next day to help him renovate the house she previously had not been interested in living in – to the point of threatening moving their child 150 miles away. Terry attempted a drive by on Ian & Mickey, but they survived. To cap it all off, Debbie was served with a warrant for statutory rape for sleeping with Julia. The season ended with her fleeing from the cops in her PJs the morning after the wedding.

So this last season, we have some things that we know will be dealt with, like Debbie’s fate, the beef with Terry, & how Kevin is gonna track down his wife to divorce her so he can marry Viv. But also on the table is the fact they are writing the COV-19 pandemic into the plot. If what I read is correct, it seems Frank may die early in the season, leaving Lip to find his footing as the patriarch of the family in the absence of Frank or Fi. And that’s the last big mystery. We don’t know if Emma Rossum will return for an episode or two as the series comes to a close next year. No matter what happens, I’ll be there for the ride!

On tonight’s episode, “This is Chicago,” the Gallaghers adjust to life during the pandemic; Frank fears gentrification of South Side; bar closures force Kev and V to get creative; Lip and Tami work to make their new house a home as Carl finishes his time at the police academy.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 12/2/20

Jenny’s Choice

Probably my favorite (or at least in the top 5) show returns tonight, and I’m so excited because we get a double episode premiere. Like so many shows, SEAL Team had to cut last season short due to the pandemic, and they left a whole whopping lot of story lines open. Clay had signed up for STA-21. Ray was waiting to hear whether or not he got the warrant officer position/rank. Both Jason and Cerberus were having to face the possibility of retirement. Jason and Mandy slept together. Mandy’s dealing with her own possible career change after having lost another asset. And hanging over Bravo’s heads is the Marsden letter, which could impact them greatly if it was one of Bravo who sent it. Not to mention they were in the middle of hunting down the Al-Hazred terrorist, the son of the man Jason killed 13 years ago, before he became Bravo 1.

I haven’t seen the double episode premiere, but I have read that it’s exciting stuff, as in edge-of-your-seat exciting. So I can’t wait, but I’m also terrified. I haven’t heard about anyone ON THE TEAM leaving the show. But here’s a bit from TVLine.com that is really interesting.

Executive producer Spencer Hudnut | So yeah, like most of our characters, even Cerberus is at a crossroads this season.

TVLINE | Do you have any idea what that looks like in the real world? Like, does the dog get rotated out and placed in a good home…?

SH | That is my understanding, and we’re dealing with it with Dita, who plays Cerberus, because Dita doesn’t know that this isn’t real combat. So to her, she’s been through three seasons and 60-plus missions. But yeah, finding a purposeful life for Cerberus is much like finding a purposeful life for any of our SEALs who move on from operating.

For those who don’t know, the guy who plays Brock, Justin Melnick, is an actual K9 police officer and is Dita’s real-life handler. Fascinating stuff, right?

On tonight’s first episode, “God of War,” Bravo Team enters enemy territory in the snowy Spin Ghar Mountain Range to capture Al-Hazred, the leader of a terrorist group and son of the terrorist leader that Jason took down early in his career and made him Bravo One. When they are attacked, Jason and Cerberus, Bravo’s canine member, are separated from the team. (Episode was directed by David Boreanez.)

Then on the second episode, “Forever War,” Bravo Team reunites with Jason and Cerberus, then go underground to search booby-trapped tunnels for terrorist leader Al-Hazred.
