After the super long hiatus, Ash vs. Evil Dead is finally back, folks. And if chop ’em up slapstick gore-fests starring Bruce Campbell are your thing, then your fix is on Starz Network Sunday nights this spring!

At the end of last season, Ash had defeated the demon trying to take over earth with the Necronomicon. As such, season three opened with Ash happily opening a hardware/dildo store in his hometown of Elk Grove, where he was finally hailed as a hero. But even as the store was having its Grand Opening day, a girl was on an “Antique Evaluator” show asking for the worth of the book, bound in human skin, she found “in the mud.” The appraiser of course read from it, and wham bam thank you ma’am, the unholy powers of darkness had been reawakened. Almost immediately, (a freshly blonde) Ruby showed up to claim the magical Book of the Dead that she helped write eons ago.

Same time that this was going on, the runes that showed Pablo’s possession through season two had returned, and at the Elk Grove high school, the team mascot had seemingly been possessed and was harassing two girls with detention. At the celebration for his store’s opening, he was confronted by former stripper Candace “Candy” Barr, who claimed to be his wife “from that one night” years ago.

Ruby performed a blood ritual with the Necronomicon (which almost made me and her both puke) as Candice informed Ash that not only did they have a daughter together, but that she was at the high school under duress and they must save her at once. They found her and her friend Rachel in the music classroom. But sad thing was – Rachel had already become a Deadite, who launched into intense instrument warfare, attacking them with every musical implement in the room. In the midst of these attacks, Candice died. Finally, though, Ash stomped her face to pieces with the super sharp strings of a harp. The gore factor here was “over-the-top-sliced-to-jelly-face-9.9-outta-10.” This show is not for the weak of heart.

After they slayed Deadite Rachel, the mascot reappeared just in time to get killed by Kelly, who had tracked them down along with her new pal, and Ash devotee, ancient Sumerian: Dalton. The gang was all reunited, and Ash decided to light up the stashed doobie he’d been saving, which he promptly offered to his 16-year-old shell-shocked daughter Brandy Barr.

On tonight’s episode, “Booth Three,” Ruby dons a new disguise in order to bond with Brady after she gives birth to something evil; Kelly comes back with a friend who leads the search for The One; Ash comes to realize that his daughter is being targeted by evil forces.

To see what disguise Ruby takes on, tune in to Starz at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

The last new episode of Chicago Fire was a blast…in more ways than one. First, Casey and Severide butted heads over how best to rescue an officer stuck in the driver’s seat of a prisoner transport van – in the end, Casey agreed they had to pull him out fast after the prisoner in back began kicking the guy’s seat, which meant he was injuring him more. Then when Casey got the back door open, the prisoner jumped out and ran, and Severide had to chase him down. Severide got a commendation for that action, which he thought his old family friend, Chief Grissom, put him up for. Grissom was sniffing around about the disagreement between Casey and Severide, but Severide shut him down, finally walking out of the bar later on, telling him he wanted to do things his own way, not Grissom’s, basically by running toward danger to help people, rather than stepping on people’s shoulders to get ahead. Nowhere was that shown more clear than the end at the chemical plant, where he and Casey put themselves in danger by holding a pipe closed while everyone else got out. The only way out for them was to…jump off the roof into the water. Really?! Neither of them are leaving the show, so I can only assume they’re going to be okay. But that is a BIG LEAP (Hah! See what I did there?) to think they could reach the river!

On tonight’s episode, “The F is For,” after photos of Casey and Severide jumping off the roof during a heroic rescue make the front page of the newspaper, Boden unwillingly agrees for the photographer to chronicle a day-in-the-life story at the Firehouse. Dawson and Brett are on a mission to find out what keeps happening to Gerald (guest star Jonathan Isaac Frank), a frequent flier they know who lives on the streets. Meanwhile, Herrmann decides to take up life-coaching as a side job, and Kidd makes a decision regarding her living arrangement with Severide.

Find out what happens when the photographer hangs out at the station tonight on NBC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing The Big Bang Theory, American Ninja Warrior: Ninja vs Ninja, Top Chef, Will & Grace, Beat Bobby Flay, Impractical Jokers, & S.W.A.T.

Early this morning, Hulu kicked off the new drama The Looming Tower. The series is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book by Lawrence Wright. It is set in the late 1990s and is inspired by the real people and events that led to the rising threat of Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda. The series also explores how various federal government agencies’ refusal to cooperate may have helped to pave the way for the tragic events that took place on 9/11.

Martin Schmidt (Peter Sarsgaard, Wormwood), the head of the CIA’s Al-Qaeda unit at Alec Station, believes his organization is the only one prepared to handle potential terrorist threats. This sentiment is also shared by CIA analyst Diane Priest (Wrenn Schmidt, Outcast, Person of Interest), who helps her boss to conceal the CIA’s intelligence on Al Qaeda from other government agencies. This infuriates the head of FBI’s counter-terrorism unit, John O’Neill (Jeff Daniels, Godless, The Newsroom), who strongly believes the U.S. is being targeted by Al Qaeda. He tries to get assistance from Richard Clarke (Michael Stuhlbarg, Fargo), the chief counter-terrorism adviser on the United States National Security Council, but still finds the flow of information to be blocked. So instead of cooperation, it becomes a race between the agencies to get the information first.

O’Neill mobilizes the members of his I-49 counter-terrorism squad to follow Al Qaeda, in hopes of exposing their plans before it’s too late, but the situation grows increasingly more serious and deadlier each day. O’Neill’s team includes Agent Ali Soufan (Tahar Rahim, The Last Panthers), a Muslim Lebanese-American who’s tired of seeing his religion being perverted in the name of terrorism; Floyd Bennet (Sullivan Jones), a former NYPD SWAT Team member; Agent Kathy Shaughnessy (Virginia Kull, Sneaky Pete, Big Little Lies); Agent Vince Stuart (Louis Cancelmi, Billions), who’s assigned to be an unwelcome presence at the CIA’s Alec Station; and veteran New York FBI agent/interrogation expert Robert Chesney (Bill Camp, The Leftovers).

I checked out the first episode and was delighted to see that the series waste no time before jumping right into the action. The series is an interesting and exciting look at how these two federal agencies – the CIA and the FBI – went about trying to gather intel on Al Qaeda’s deadly activities around the globe and how their lack of communication and refusal to share information might have ultimately allowed this terrorist organization to thrive and carry out its plans. I look forward to checking out more of the show, even though we ultimately know how it ends. The cast is great, especially Jeff Daniels. It’s hard to believe that he was once known for playing an idiot on Dumb and Dumber! With The Newsroom and now this series, Daniels now really embodies the idea of a serious, well-educated, and influential man.

Today, Hulu released the first 3 episodes of the 10-episode limited series and will release the rest of the episodes one per week each Wednesday.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Goldbergs, Modern Family, American Housewife, Designated Survivor, Survivor, The Blacklist, The X-Files, 9-1-1, American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace, Schitt’s Creek, Let’s Get Physical, and The Magicians.

Tonight, NBC kicks off the new dramedy Good Girls, which follows three suburban mothers who decide to fix their financial problems by robbing a grocery store. Beth Boland (Christina Hendricks, Mad Men) discovers that her husband, car dealership owner Dean (Matthew Lillard, Twin Peaks, Bosch), has been both cheating on her and has been lying about the family’s devastating financial situation for years. Her younger sister Annie’s (Mae Whitman, Parenthood) ex is demanding custody of their daughter Sadie (Izzy Stannard, Brad’s Status) and she needs money to hire a lawyer. And friend Ruby (Retta, Parks and Recreation) and her security guard husband Stan (Reno Wilson, Mike & Molly) are in desperate need of money to pay for their daughter’s kidney treatments. Fed up with their situations, the women break bad and rob the local grocery store where Annie works, hoping to get $30K to ease their money problems. However, their situation becomes a lot more complicated when they discover they got more than they bargained for and are now wrapped up in a dangerous situation involving the head of a local crime gang, Rio (Manny Montana, Graceland).

I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere. The cast is great and really play well off one another, and the pilot does a good job of establishing the characters’ relationships and motivations. The series feels much like Big Little Lies meets Breaking Bad. You’ve got the dark secrets these suburban moms are dealing with that ultimately cause them to do really bad things in the name of helping out their families. The series has this nice blend of drama and humor. The women forced to do some unexpected things, and while they initially have good intentions, things quickly get out of hand and desperation takes over. I look forward to seeing what other twists and turns happen over the course of the season and if/how these women are about to get out of the situation they’ve managed to get themselves into. Will be see them go full-on Walter White by the end of the season, or will they find a way to still remain good people at heart?

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” a trio of desperate suburban moms decide that being good never got them anywhere and rob a supermarket in order to get a little cash to help them and their families out. Unfortunately, the supermarket is already the territory of a local gang, and the women soon find themselves in hot water.

Meet the three moms who take on more than they bargained for tonight on NBC at 10/9c.

Tonight, AMC’s The Walking Dead returns for the second half of its eighth season. As the first half of the season came to a close, the Saviors retaliated in full force, doing devastating damage to our combined force of good guys. They stopped Maggie and her Hilltop caravan, killed one of the citizens as a show of force to get Maggie back in line, and sent her back to the Hilltop to keep producing their crops/food supply. In the Kingdom, Ezekiel set fires to buy his people some time to escape, before turning himself over to the Saviors. And Dwight stuck to his agreement, helping lure some of the Saviors into a trap that Daryl and Rosita had set but blowing his cover in the process. Meanwhile, Negan and his men attacked and burned Alexandria to the ground. Negan was out for vengeance, and Carl offered himself up as a sacrifice, but Negan wasn’t having any of that. Carl and the others managed to escape the town as it burned via the sewers. However, at the end of the episode we (and Rick) discovered why Carl was so willing to offer himself up — he had been bitten and it was now only a matter of time before he would join the ranks of the undead.

Will they really kill off Carl? (This seems highly likely, despite the showrunner’s recent backpedaling.) And if so, what does this mean for Rick? This whole series started with Rick’s desperate search to find his son — how will Rick change without this driving force in his life? And how will the rest of the group be affected by the loss of Carl? How will Dwight fit into the group now that he can’t go back to the Saviors? Will Eugene ever man up and do the right thing, or will he continue to stick with the Saviors? And will our group ever manage to kill Negan?! I can’t say that I wasn’t extremely disappointed with the way the first half of the season ended — I’ve kind of been disappointed with the series as a whole ever since the arrival of Negan. I really hope the series can course correct in this second half of the season and become the great show it once was. And if this is his final episode, I hope that Carl gets a great send-off and that he can make one final big move on his way out that helps our group.

On tonight’s midseason premiere, “Honor,” Rick faces new difficulties after a battle. Meanwhile, the fight continues in other communities as core members face hard decisions.

See how the group fares tonight on AMC at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Celebrity Big Brother, A.P. Bio, Worst Cooks in America, Crashing, and Counterpart.
