Kyle’s Choice

Tonight ABC kicks off the new mystery/thriller/family drama Emergence. While ABC didn’t provide a screener for the series, they did make the first 9 minutes of the series available to watch on their web site, and I was hooked after checking it out this short preview. I am looking forward to seeing the full episode tonight!

Small-town police chief Jo Evans (Allison Tolman, Fargo) is at home with her 14-year-old daughter Mia (Ashley Aufderheide, The Slap) and father Ed (Clancy Brown, Earth 2) when there is a sudden, short, town-wide power outage. The outage also temporarily knocks out all electronic devices, causing a small plane to crash. When Jo heads to the crash site to investigate, she finds a mysterious young girl named Piper (Alexa Swinton), who has no memory of who she is or what happened. It’s unclear if she was part of the crash, but she doesn’t have a scratch on her. Jo brings Piper to the hospital to get her checked out but soon discovers that there are people posing as government agents who are looking for the girl. Jo decides to take Piper in to protect her until she can figure out more about this conspiracy surrounding who this girl is and what’s happening. But while the two are in the car, they start to experience some strange phenomena, and it seems like Piper may be the source.

Every year, at least one of the networks seems to have one of these high-concept mystery/thrillers in their new fall lineup, always trying to recreate the magic of Lost. And while many of them don’t make it, I always end up watching and enjoying these shows. This one has an interesting premise and a great cast, and I hope it sticks around. The cast also includes many recognizable TV faces, including Owain Yeoman (The Mentalist) as Benny Gallagher, Robert Bailey Jr. (The Night Shift) as Officer Chris Minetto, Zabryna Guevara (New Amsterdam) as Abby Fraiser, and Donald Faison (Scrubs) as Alex Evans.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 9/23/19

Welcome back, fall TV! We’ve sure missed you around here! Because there’s so much on this week, we have multiple picks almost every night. Mostly we’ll feature some new shows, but some returning faves may or may not make the list as well. So check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Jenny’s Choice #1

My first pick tonight is the new drama on CBS, All Rise, although I’d coin it almost a dramedy, rather than a straight drama. I’ve seen the first couple of episodes, and there’s a lot to laugh about in addition to the courtroom drama action. The show stars Simone Missick (Misty Knight on Marvel’s Luke Cage & Marvel’s The Defenders) as Lola Carmichael, former deputy district attorney turned newly appointed judge. Despite what her new judicial assistant Sherri (Ruthie Ann Miles, probably most famous for her roles on Broadway, but she was also in a few episodes of The Americans as well) advises her, Lola is determined to push the boundaries and challenge the expectations of what a judge can be. Unlike the older, stuffier judges who push cases through in rapid fire, Lola is determined to give each case her all, no matter how backed up her case files are. It’s that caring concern mixed with the humor she brings that makes her fun to watch.

Also starring are Wilson Bethel (Hart of Dixie) as Mark Callan, a deputy district attorney who has been best friends with Lola since college; Marg Helgenberger (CSI) as Supervisory Judge Lisa Benner, an influential, powerful woman tasked with overseeing Lola’s transition into her new job; Jessica Camacho (Taken, The Flash, Sleepy Hollow) as Emily Lopez, a young, empathetic public defender; J. Alex Brinson (Travelers) as Luke Watkins, a court bailiff by day, law student by night who takes a liking to Emily; and Lindsay Mendez (best known for her roles on Broadway) as Sara Castillo, a court reporter and reliable source of intel and advice.

I really loved this pilot. It’s funny, but it’s got heart too, and I can’t wait to see more.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” newly appointed Judge Lola Carmichael works to get justice for people amidst a flawed legal process.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 9/22/19

Have you ever been at a loss as to what to watch? Too many shows to pick from? We’re here to give you our opinions on what we feel is worth watching. Check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Phoebe’s Choice

One of the best comic book adaptations that TV has seen in recent years draws one step closer to completion tonight as Preacher airs its second-to-last episode ever. This is a gritty, mature audiences-only kind of show, similar to the depraved source material written by Garth Ennis and drawn by Steve Dillon. As we get close to the finale, it’s obvious it will not end exactly as the book did, but that’s okay. That’s what this show has been like all along: a great rendition that carries the spirit of the comic, even if they changed a lot of minor details (and Tulip’s ethnicity).

Last week we got a bit of background of the Grail’s Herr Star, who was a bullied beauty pageant winner as a child. This history was told in a fever dream that he woke from to find himself held by cannibals who were eating his leg. Before they ate much more of him, he was rescued by Lara Featherstone, who was once again working for the Grail. At some remote farm, Cassidy and Tulip had the true messiah, Humerdoo, held hostage. To exact her revenge on God, Tulip wanted to kill Humperdoo in front of the Almighty. After God told Star the location, the Grail easily pulled off a rescue mission.

When God & Jesse had their face-to-face finally, God told the Preacher that he failed because even though he resisted temptation, he “wanted” to give in to it. God then bit Jesse’s eyeball out, a gruesome moment that came straight out of the comic book. This infuriated Jesse, but God teleported him back to his friends, instructing him to bring them along to the coming Apocalypse. We also got a glimpse of Arseface discovering his passion for music. Perhaps we’ll see a bit of his meteoric rise to fame that he had in the book? No matter what happens, tonight’s penultimate episode should be a riot!

On tonight’s episode, “Overture,” Masada is abuzz as the Messiah has finally arrived. Our heroes mount one last assault in a desperate attempt to thwart the end of the world, but God uses every trick in His omniscient arsenal to divide them. Eugene gets out of prison.
