Tonight is the series premiere of – The Masked Singer on FOX at 9/8c. Hosted by Nick Cannon, with panelists Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and Robin Thicke, the show is a top-secret celebrity singing competition that will have everyone asking, “who’s behind the mask?!” Based on an international format, and already a viral phenomenon with over half a billion fans worldwide, the series features celebrities facing off against one another with one major twist: each singer is shrouded from head to toe in an elaborate costume, complete with full face mask to conceal his or her identity. With each performance, the host, panelists, audience, viewers and even the other contestants are left guessing who is singing behind the mask. Although the celebrities’ identities are a mystery, between them they have a combined 65 Grammy Award nominations, 16 Emmy Award nominations, four stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and four Super Bowl titles. The singers may attempt to throw the crowd off of their scent, while keen observers might pick up on tiny clues buried throughout the show. One singer will be eliminated by the audience and judges each week, based on their performance, and will then reveal his or her true identity. It’s not a “whodunit,” it’s a “whosungit!”

Tonight is also the seris premiere of Mythbusters Jr on Science Chennel at 3:01AM/2:01AMc. Adam Savage will return to television as host and executive producer. For the ten-episode series Savage has teamed-up with six of the nation’s leading young ‘makers’, robotics wizzes, builders, and inventors, all under the age of 16, who show off their amazing ingenuity and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) skills. Together, they tackle myt9hs just like those seen in the popular Emmy(R) nominated television series MythBusters, ranging from driving, explosions, movies, popular culture and more. From building a fire extinguisher jetpack, to dominos big enough to crush a car, and testing myths from the Oscar(R)-winning big screen pic Gravity and TV’s Breaking Bad, it’s an action-packed season.

Finally, tonight is the series premiere of True Life/Now on MTV at 10/9c. Four episodes will uncover stories of real people immersed in today’s biggest social phenomena ranging from celebrity fanaticism to photo filter addiction.

With the new year approaching, the Winter TV season is finally upon us, and there are lots of new and returning shows about to premiere. Tonight FOX launches the fun new mystery singing competition series, The Masked Singer.

I had stopped watched these singing competition series a while back, but The Masked Singer provides a fun new twist on the genre. If you saw the YouTube clip of Ryan Reynolds dressed as a unicorn signing on a Korean TV show last year, this is the same show but for US audiences. The series finds 12 celebrities hiding their identities under full-body costumes as they take the stage to sing incognito before a live audience. All told, the 12 celebrity competitors have amassed 65 Grammy nominations, 16 multi-Platinum albums, 16 Emmy nominations, nine Broadway shows, four stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and four Super Bowl titles! Each week some of the contestants will participate in head-to-head sing-offs. The studio audience and judges will vote, and at the end of the night, one of the singers will be eliminated and reveal his or her identity. Hosting the series is Nick Cannon, and the judging panel includes Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong, and Nicole Scherzinger.

I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere. As each masked singer is introduced, they give some clues to help you try to identify them. The judges also ask each contestant a question or two and make their own guesses. When the contestants are interviewed, their voices are distorted, but it’s fun to try to figure out who these singers are based on the clues, their mannerisms, their singing voices, etc. It’s obvious that some of these folks have a lot of experience singing/performing, while others not-so-much. My screeners for the first two episodes were blurred and bleeped during the big reveals, so I am really excited to check out tonight’s episode to learn the identity of one of these celebrities! In tonight’s episode, we meet half of the contestants, and next week we meet the second half.

On tonight’s premiere, “Mask On Face Off,” the first six undercover celebrity singers – peacock, hippo, monster, unicorn, deer and lion – face off against one another in elaborate head-to-toe costumes.

Check out the wildly fun competition tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording MythBusters Jr.

Phoebe’s Choice

A few weeks ago, Lethal Weapon gave us their Christmas episode before going on a short break. They’re back tonight, but allegedly Damon Wayans’s days on the program are numbered. For now at least, he’s still playing the TV version of Captain Murtaugh based on the blockbuster film series. Last time we started with a flashback to Cole’s childhood and how tough he had it being the son of a single mom who was a war zone photographer. Fast forward to the present, and we saw that he was trying to make up for the absentee parent he’d been by making this Christmas with his daughter count.

Cole saw one of his friends, Oscar, who was an ex-con, meeting with a shady guy. This happened while the two old pals were on a meetup so their kids Sam & Maya could hang out. Murtaugh’s son was on his way back from Costa Rica, and he called from the airport. Roger began to plan a welcome home party. That night, a burglary went explosively wrong, and one robber was shot by the wife. The next morning, Cole & Roger were on the scene, and they discovered the dead thief was the man Cole saw Oscar talking with. Oscar wound up getting arrested, but not before he drove his car through the wall of Cole’s motel room. In the meantime, the female cop pairing of Bailey and Louisa got placed on a chopped-up jogger case, and Capt. Brooks was a bit bummed because his husband went to see family in Wyoming without him.

Oscar swore he was innocent, and Cole believed him. The kids saw a third guy talking to Oscar and the dead guy, and they drew a sketch that looked like Santa with a birthmark. Cole followed up on the lead and recruited Murtaugh into helping him investigate the scene. They entered the house through the chimney (ho, ho, ho!), but Murtaugh got stuck. Cole wound up fighting 3 criminals at once, including a rad chainsaw fight sequence. The crooks got away with a frozen thumb, but not before Cole saw what it was they needed from the house.

While the welcome home party was occurring, Roger discovered that his son missed his flight and he got upset at him. The next day, the two cases converged when the jogger was ID’d as a bank security guard missing a thumb. They rushed to the scene of the crime in motion, and there was a Christmas parade crowding the streets outside. The guys pulling the heist ran into the crowds dressed as two Santas, but the good guys soon chased them down and saved the day. Oscar was released from jail, and Cole bought Brooks a ticket to Wyoming. Merry Christmas!!

Now, regarding the future of this show? It look highly canceled after this season. It is all but formal. Even though they have a strong cast that could support a cop comedy show without Damon Wayans, there is just no Lethal Weapon without either Riggs or Murtaugh. So looking forward to seeing them end it strong at least.

On tonight’s episode, “There Will Be Bud,” Cole finds himself on the rebound after Natalie’s engagement, and his new romantic interest, Julie (guest star Haley Strode), has an unexpected connection to A.D.A. Erica (guest star Nishi Munshi), complicating things at work. Meanwhile, Murtaugh worries about the connection between the murder he’s investigating and a new opportunity for Trish to serve as co-counsel on a high-profile lawsuit with Leo Getz (guest star Thomas Lennon).

To see how Cole rebounds and how Trish’s lawsuit goes, tune in to FOX at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching The Gifted.
