If We Controlled Your Remote… 10/17/18

Have you ever been at a loss as to what to watch? Too many shows to pick from? We’re here to give you our opinions on what we feel is worth watching. Check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Jenny’s Choice

SEAL Team returned last week, and it was packed full of action and emotion. Mandy wasn’t with the team, on a mission of her own in Mexico. She was there questioning a man named Fausto about a missing DEA agent. I wasn’t too invested in the story line, given that she wasn’t with the team. But I’m wondering if that’ll be a future mission for Bravo Team. Speaking of Bravo, they were in Saudi Arabia for their mission – one of the old tunnel systems at the heart of the largest water source in the country had been taken over by Shiite Extremists. Together with the Saudi military, they had to work to stop them.

Back at home, Ray was having to make a decision about waiting to get back on Bravo or applying to another team – Charlie. Also, Jason took his daughter on her first college tour, which was great because their relationship has had its up and downs, and given what happened at the end of the episode, they may need that bond to be stronger soon. I think my favorite part of the episode, though, was Clay and Stella having dinner with her parents…who were both clearly anti-military or whatever. They were pretty uppity and snotty, but Clay was calm and clearly let them know he was more than they were assuming he was. I think it was the sexiest I’ve ever found him. He’s clearly growing more mature as the series goes on.

And now to the scary part of the episode… In the closing moments, a cop knocked on Jason’s door, asking if he was Jason Hayes. “I’m sorry to have to tell you this. It’s your wife. There’s been an accident.” Even though they weren’t happily married anymore, Jason clearly still loves Alana. And they have two teenage kids, so if she is severely injured or dead, it’s going to knock the three of them on their behinds. And how will Jason handle that? I mean, with his job and everything. So many questions!

On tonight’s episode, “The Worst of Conditions,” after tragedy strikes, Jason is faced with a huge decision regarding his future with Bravo Team.

To see what Jason is going through and what decision he makes, tune in to CBS at 9:01/8:01c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Chicago Med, The Goldbergs, American Housewife, Chicago Fire, Guy’s Grocery Games, Modern Family, Single Parents, Chicago PD, & Criminal Minds.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 10/16/18

Have you ever been at a loss as to what to watch? Too many shows to pick from? We’re here to give you our opinions on what we feel is worth watching. Check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Jenny’s Choice

My pick tonight is ABC’s latest drama, The Rookie, starring Castle vet, Nathan Fillion, who plays John Nolan, a small-town guy who pursues his dream of being an LAPD officer after an incident one day changes the way he looks at his life. He’s the force’s oldest rookie, so many of the higher-ups feel like he’s just a “walking midlife crisis,” and some are even really hard on him, since if he can’t keep up, he’ll not only be a danger to himself but to the public and other officers out there with him.

I was a big Castle (& Nathan Fillion) fan and was sad when it ended, even though the last few seasons weren’t as great as the beginning. I’m an even bigger fan of cop shows, so combine Nathan, cop shows, and a few producers from some of my all-time favorite shows like Criminal Minds & Human Target, and you know I’m going to look forward to it. When I got a chance to watch the pilot, I was both scared and excited – excited, because, duh…and scared because I was worried it wouldn’t live up to my expectations. But it did, even more than I’d hoped. There’s some serious story lines, but there’s also that Fillion charm and some laughs and romance as well, so I have my fingers crossed that it’ll be as popular with others as I think it should be.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” after a life-altering incident, John Nolan decides to pursue his dream of becoming a police officer; as the force’s oldest rookie, John is met with skepticism from some higher-ups.

Find out why John decides to join the police department tonight on ABC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing The Conners, The Little Couple, NCIS, The Kids Are Alright, Chopped, FBI, Lethal Weapon, NCIS: New Orleans, & Sweet Home Sextuplets.

The Games Making Us Swap Remotes for Joysticks

This “atompunk” beauty is one of our favorite games

We’ll admit it! As TV enthusiasts, a video game needs to be pretty special indeed for us to put down the TV remote and pick up a controller instead. As advanced as the video gaming industry has become, with simulations and emulations available in abundance, not every game released manages to hold our attention. There are some games, however, that have interesting stories, engaging content, and compelling characters who keep us tuning in, much like our favorite TV shows. Here’s a rundown, in no particular order, of some of our favorites:

Fallout 3

Even though this franchise has been around since the late nineties and contains a total of seven different titled games with another one in the works, the fifth game in the series (confusingly titled Fallout 3) is our top pick from this crop of games.

This post-apocalyptic, “atompunk retrofuturistic” RPG is incredibly vast. It’s an open world game, so you can wander, and wander, and wander – which probably makes it one of the definitive immersive video games. The attention to detail in each environment would make even Stanley Kubrick quake in his boots. Add some special guest voice stars like Heroes’ Mr. Linderman himself, and you have yourself a winner. Released way back in 2008, it’s still so popular that a new mod has even been released for it this year.

Red Dead Redemption

“Ride ’em, Cowboy!”

Before we had Westworld through which to live out our Wild West fantasies, there was Red Dead Redemption. This iconic game had us hooked from the moment we saw the released footage of its gameplay, and with its eagerly-anticipated follow-up, Red Dead Redemption 2, due for release any day now, it’s definitely time to give this one a re-visit.

RDR has drawn critical and cultural acclaim for everything – from its gripping gameplay to immersive, interactive elements, like being able to play Five-Finger-Fillet in a full-on Wild West Saloon. Then there’s all the gunfights, missions, and hours of roaming open plains on horseback that you can enjoy as the lead character John Marston. Despite almost being ten years old, RDR definitely withstands the test of time.

Super Mario Bros III

Okay, it’s a bit of a retro choice, and if you’re not playing it on an original console, the feeling isn’t quite the same… However, Super Mario Bros III is one of those games that we’ll happily forgo time spent watching the gogglebox for. And if you don’t feel the same after watching this nostalgic clip below, then what are you reading this article for?

Batman: Arkham Franchise

In much the same way we’d never be able to prefer one Game of Thrones season over another, so it’s the same for the Batman: Arkham franchise. Whether it’s trying to stop the mayhem unleashed by the Joker in Arkham Asylum, facing down eight of Gotham’s most deadly assassins in Origins, or dealing with the king of terrifying lunatics, Scarecrow, in Arkham Knight, each of these games based on DC’s most noir of all characters is truly gripping in their own right. If you want to take your Batman: Arkham immersion one step further, check out Rocksteady’s own virtual reality experience, Batman: Arkham VR. Although, we can’t promise that you won’t return with bats on the brain if you do…

South Park Stick of Truth

Okay, it’s another slightly retro pick, but since it has only just been given a release date for Nintendo Switch, this hilarious game is a lot more relevant to today’s audience than you might think. From the deranged geniuses Trey Parker and Matt Stone, South Park the television series, the movie, the tie-in album, and yeah, the video game really shouldn’t need much of an introduction!

Why do we love Stick of Truth? Let us count the ways… For starters, it actually has a really simple premise and, despite all the lunacy that unfolds, the characters similar to what we know and love from the TV show. Plus, that 8-bit Canada level will always have us chuckling to ourselves with its Legend of Zelda homage.
