If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/3/18

Have you ever been at a loss as to what to watch? Too many shows to pick from? We’re here to give you our opinions on what we feel is worth watching. Check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, TBS premieres the new comedy The Last O.G.. Tracy Morgan (30 Rock, SNL) stars as Tray, a man who is released from prison after spending 15 years behind bars for selling drugs. However, he soon discovers that the world has changed a lot while he was in prison. Tray’s Brooklyn neighborhood has been gentrified and no longer resembles the hood he grew up in. His former girlfriend Shay (Tiffany Haddish, The Carmichael Show, Girls Trip) is now married to a white guy (Ryan Gaul, Superstore), who’s been helping to raise the teenage twins (Taylor Mosby & Dante Hoagland) Tray never even knew he had. Now Tray has put his life back together if he wants to be a part of his kids’ lives. Helping Tray adjust to his new life on the outside are his cousin Bobby (Allen Maldonado, black-ish) and halfway house administrator/wannabe comedian Mullins (Cedric the Entertainer).

This series has such a great cast, and it is especially great to see Tracy Morgan doing well and back doing what he does best. Tonight’s premiere primarily just introduces the characters and sets up the show’s premise, but it looks like this should be a really fun and heartwarming show once it gets going. Much like the other TBS comedies, the series will be serialized in its storytelling. Since I am an all or none type of person when it comes to watching a TV series, I definitely prefer this more serialized format, rather than a traditional sitcom that is more of a drop in/drop out setup that resets the status quo each week. I like to see the characters and storyline progress over the course of a season.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” ex-con Tray is shocked to see how much the world has changed when he’s released from prison for good behavior after a 15-year stint.

Catch the premiere tonight on TBS at 10:30/9:30c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Middle, black-ish, Splitting Up Together, For the People, Rise, LA to Vegas, The Mick, Black Lightning, and Legion.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/2/18

Have you ever been at a loss as to what to watch? Too many shows to pick from? We’re here to give you our opinions on what we feel is worth watching. Check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, ABC premieres the new series The Crossing. Sheriff Jude Ellis (Steve Zahn, War for the Planet of the Apes) is called to investigate when hundreds of bodies start washing ashore in his small fishing town in the Pacific Northwest. The bodies are not wearing any lifejackets, and no ship or aircraft can be found. It’s like these people just appeared out of nowhere. As Homeland Security Agent Emma Ren (Sandrine Holt, Homeland, Mr. Robot) interviews the 47 survivors, they all have the same story — that they are refugees from a war that takes place in America nearly 200 years in the future. Are these people telling the truth? How is this even possible?

The series also stars Natalie Martinez (Secrets & Lies, Kingdom), Georgina Haig (Once Upon a Time), Tommy Bastow (Harley and The Davidson), Rob Campbell (Chicago Med), Rick Gomez (Band of Brothers, Justified), Marcuis W. Harris (Animal Kingdom), Grant Harvey (The Secret Life of the American Teenager), Jay Karnes (The Shield), Simone Kessell (Of Kings and Prophets), Kelley Missal (One Life to Live), Luc Roderique, and Bailey Skodje (A Christmas to Remember).

I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere, which ABC had made available early online. The series wastes no time jumping right into the mystery of where/when these refugees have come from and why they are here. It also launches some new questions as to what exactly they are running from and how that threat may be linked to the present time. The pilot introduces some of the main characters, and we start to get a glimpse into their various relationships, which will no doubt be explored in more detail in future episodes. I really liked the small, remote fishing town setting, as that adds a level of mystery and creepiness to the events. I look forward to seeing more of this show, and I hope they continue this trend of both giving viewers answers, while also spurring on new questions.

On tonight’s premiere, “Pilot,” Sheriff Jude Ellis and DHS agent Emma Ren team up to investigate 47 refugees who wash up in a small fishing village, claiming to be fleeing a war taking place 180 years in the future.

Check out this new haunting drama tonight on ABC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Good Girls, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Terror, and UnREAL.

Robot Chicken: The Walking Dead Special Review

The stop-motion animated series Robot Chicken has ventured into the worlds of Star Wars and DC Comics for previous specials, but for its latest 22-minute themed special, the series takes on The Walking Dead. As the special opens, a nerd is visiting the U.S. Walking Dead Museum, which was established to honor and celebrate the heroes who saved the humans from the walkers, found a cure to the walker virus, and brought an end to the Walk-pocolypse—the group known as “Rick and the Gang”. The young man acting as the tour guide for the museum is being quite liberal with the facts, getting all sorts of information wrong. This angers an older Carl who is hiding in the shadows. He pulls the nerdy tourist aside to correct this information, and starts to recount the events that really happened.

The special is a collection of shorts based on many of the memorable/major events from the first 7 seasons of The Walking Dead. These are a fun mix of recreations, parodies, comical speculation as to what happened after the moments we saw on the show, and other general craziness set in the The Walking Dead universe. There are some funny running jokes such as people thinking Carl is a girl, due to his long hair. There are also some really hilarious musical moments such as Negan singing about his signature dip move, a chained-up Merle singing a love duet with a walker, and the Terminus folks (led by he voice of Daniel Radcliffe) singing a welcome song to Rick and the gang about how they have no plans to eat them. There is also a really creative sequence that is shot from the POV of a walker—we hear his inner monologue as he searches for food and falls to his death (again). And another sequence gives a Superman-like origin to Lucille the bat. Overall, the writing is quite clever, and you can really tell those involved are big fans of The Walking Dead.
