If We Controlled Your Remote… 3/27/18

Have you ever been at a loss as to what to watch? Too many shows to pick from? We’re here to give you our opinions on what we feel is worth watching. Check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Jenny’s Choice #1

I was a big fan of Roseanne back in the day. There was something just…real about them. They didn’t put on airs, and unlike a lot of shows nowadays, it wasn’t a show about wealthy people and their first-world problems. They were relatable in that the problems they had, I could see myself having those same problems. So when I heard they were bringing it back, I was excited but nervous. Then every little piece of news that came out about it made me happy: same cast, same set, Dan is alive, etc etc etc. Even Johnny Galecki, who is busy over on another network on The Big Bang Theory, is going to be back on an episode as David. And both Beckys are back — the original Becky (Lecy Goranson) is back as Becky, while Sarah Chalke (Becky #2) is guest starring on a few episodes in a special role opposite Goranson. The nostalgia factor is high in this one, I swear. One original character not back is Becky’s husband Mark. The actor, Glenn Quinn, died of a drug overdose in 2002. But Darlene’s son is named Mark after the character, so he’s there in spirit.

Then I saw the first two episodes, and it really blew me away. It’s still the same down to earth, relatable, funny show from the 80s/90s, but they’ve kept it real. Dan and Roseanne are older, so there are health concerns (including Dan wearing a CPAP breathing machine when he sleeps and Roseanne nursing a bad knee), financial and insurance concerns, and adult children/grandchildren moving back in (like is so common now). The snark is still the same, the humor is there, yet everything is updated to 2018: Dan and Roseanne are Trump supporters, Darlene’s son is gender-fluid, and even the opioid crisis plays a part in the new episodes. It’s all really well done and makes me so glad it’s back.

On tonight’s first half hour of the 1-hour episode, “Twenty Years to Life,” Roseanne and Dan adjust to living under the same roof with Darlene and her two children, Harris and Mark, when Darlene loses her job. Meanwhile, Becky announces she is going to be a surrogate to make extra money; and Roseanne and Jackie are at odds with one another. Then in the second half hour, “Dress to Impress,” Darlene’s son, Mark, gets caught with a pocket knife after being bullied on the first day of his new school. Meanwhile, Becky invites Andrea over to meet the family and is nervous to bring her home.

Don’t miss the start of the revival tonight on ABC at 8/7c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 3/26/18

Have you ever been at a loss as to what to watch? Too many shows to pick from? We’re here to give you our opinions on what we feel is worth watching. Check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, AMC airs the two-hour premiere of the new series The Terror. The series is a thriller inspired by the real 1845 expedition by two Royal Navy ships that left England looking for the Northwest Passage through the Arctic. Despite being the most technological ships of their time, the ships and their crew mysteriously vanished without a trace. The drama follows this doomed expedition, led by Sir John Franklin (Ciarán Hinds, Game of Thrones), a man who makes Titanic-like decisions to proceed with the expedition despite evidence that conditions may be too dangerous. And the captains of his two ships, Francis Crozier (Jared Harris, Mad Men) and James Fitzjames (Tobias Menzies, Outlander), don’t like one another and are always at odds. As the ships come across a seemingly impenetrable sea of ice blocking their path, the crew starts to see foreboding visions and faces the threats of disease, dwindling resources, and starvation, while a mysterious, monstrous force starts picking them off one by one. The cast also includes Paul Ready (Fortitude), Adam Nagaitis (Happy Valley), Nive Nielsen, Ian Hart (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone), and Trystan Gravelle (Mr. Selfridge).

Last night AMC aired a special preview of the first hour of tonight’s premiere, hidden as the second half of a 2-hour episode of The Walking Dead in the programming guide, so unless you watched/recorded The Walking Dead, you wouldn’t have even known it was airing. The first hour introduces the characters and gives a few flashbacks to the characters’ lives before the expedition. At the same time, it slowly builds some of the mystery and tension of the situation. However, it looks like things will really kick into high gear in the second half of tonight’s premiere, which I’m looking forward to.

Today AMC has made the entire first season available to AMC Premiere subscribers for binging but will continue to air the series weekly for those of us who don’t subscribe. (This looks like it could be a good show for binging!)

On tonight’s premiere, “Go for Broke; Gore,” an accident at sea cripples a Royal Navy expedition 200 miles from finding the Northwest Passage, forcing its captains to make a dire choice.

Check out the two-hour premiere on AMC starting at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Good Doctor, The Resident, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, iZombie, UnREAL, The Alienist, Good Girls, and Final Space.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 3/25/18

Have you ever been at a loss as to what to watch? Too many shows to pick from? We’re here to give you our opinions on what we feel is worth watching. Check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, FX kicks off the new drama Trust, inspired by the real-life saga of one of America’s wealthiest families, the Gettys. The series opens in 1973, as oil tycoon John Paul Getty (Donald Sutherland, Ice, Crossing Lines) is living in a mansion in the English countryside along with his wife, mistresses, and pet lion. While Getty is the richest man in the world, he is still an extreme penny-pincher. His sons can’t stand him — he doesn’t give them any respect, and they don’t necessarily want to take over the family business. Getty’s estranged, free-spirited grandson John Paul Getty III (Harris Dickinson, Clique) arrives at the mansion and impresses his grandfather with his knowledge of arts and culture. Getty seems some potential in the 17-year-old as a successor, but Paul has ulterior motives and is secretly looking for some quick money to pay off a debt. Getty wants Paul to earn his money and sends him off to Italy to learn more about the business, but Paul’s lack of maturity ultimately gets him into trouble and leads to his infamous kidnapping and ransom at the hands of the Italian mob. Getty hasn’t kept his fortune by giving it away, and he’s not about to start now, no matter what the kidnappers demand. Paul’s mother, Gail Getty (Hilary Swank, Million Dollar Baby), is the only one trying to negotiate with the kidnappers, but she has no access to the family’s money, and Paul’s father, J. Paul Getty Jr. (Michael Esper, Shades of Blue), is too busy to care.

The series was created by Simon Beaufoy (Battle of the Sexes, Everest, 127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire), and the first 3 episodes are directed by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting , Steve Jobs, 127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire). The cast also includes Brendan Fraser (The Affair), Anna Chancellor (New Blood), Norbert Leo Butz (Bloodline, Mercy Street), Charlotte Riley (Peaky Blinders), and Luca Marinelli.

I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere. The series has amazing production values — you would think it was a film and not a cable TV series. And the acting is great — Donald Sutherland is such a commanding presence who can be both charming and despicable at the same time. I am not familiar with all the details of this kidnapping case — I didn’t see the recent Oscar-nominated film, All the Money in the World — so I am really looking forward to seeing how this all plays out and what twists and turns lie ahead. It seems ridiculous that someone with that much money would refuse to pay the ransom for a family member. I’m really interested to learn more about what was going through John Paul Getty’s head at the time, how the kidnappers react to this unexpected turn of events, and what ultimately happens to Paul.

On tonight’s premiere, “The House of Getty,” John Paul Getty III, a member of one of the 20th century’s most iconic families, is kidnapped in 1973.

Catch the beginning of this famous family saga tonight on FX at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Barry, Deception, Instinct, Timeless, Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Family Guy, The Last Man on Earth, Silicon Valley, Billions, & The Walking Dead.
