If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/21/18

Have you ever been at a loss as to what to watch? Too many shows to pick from? We’re here to give you our opinions on what we feel is worth watching. Check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, FOX airs the first half of the two-night premiere of the new medical series The Resident, which takes a look at the darker drama happening behind-the-scenes at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital. The series follows recent Harvard Medical School graduate, the wide-eyed young Dr. Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal, Halt and Catch Fire), as he embarks on his new internship at the hospital. As he arrives on the first day, Dr. Pravesh learns that his supervisor will be hot shot third-year resident Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry, Gilmore Girls), who has a reputation for being a bit of a jerk. As Dr. Hawkins uses tough love to teach his new intern the ropes, Dr. Pravesh quickly discovers that for these doctors, the ethical lines for treating patients are blurred.

Meanwhile, Dr. Conrad constantly finds himself dealing with problems caused by the Chief of Surgery, Dr. Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood, American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson). The aging chief refuses to acknowledge that he’s no longer the sharp surgeon he once was. He often puts patients at unnecessary (and sometimes fatal) risk and then uses his power to intimidate the other doctors into covering up his mistakes. Other staff members include Dr. Conrad’s former flame, nurse Nicolette “Nic” Nevin (Emily VanCamp, Everwood), and intelligent, gifted surgeon Dr. Mina Okafor (Shaunette Renée Wilson, Billions), who has no bedside manner and little patience for the chief. The series cast also includes Moran Atias (24: Legacy, Tyrant), Merrin Dungey (Big Little Lies, Alias), and Melina Kanakaredes (CSI: NY).

I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere. The series is fast-paced and mixes interesting medical cases with some really engaging character drama. It doesn’t seem like this series will be a simple case-of-the-week type medical procedural. A lot of the focus is on the drama going on behind the scenes at this hospital as the doctors struggle to fix the broken system, starting with how to deal with this chief who is putting lives in danger while hiding behind his notoriety, fame, and power. The series looks beautiful and has a very cinematic feel to it, making use of some creative camera angles, including a scene shot from the POV of the patient. The cast is great, and I really look forward to seeing what happens next, when the series moves to its regular time slot tomorrow night!

On tonight’s premiere, “Pilot,” on his first day as an intern, an idealistic Dr. Devon Pravesh faces the harsh realities of medical care; resident Conrad Hawkins teaches him unconventional methods for treating patients; Conrad goes head-to-head with Dr. Solomon Bell.

To meet the new doctors and nurses, tune in to FOX at 10/9c.

Note: Tonight’s premiere will follow the football game, so be sure to pad your DVR recording for the inevitable sports run-over.

I’ll also be watching/recording Worst Cooks in America, The Alienist, Crashing, and Counterpart.

Saturday on TV – 1/20/18

Saturday is the series premiere of Planet Earth: Blue Planet II on BBC America at 9/8c. Presented by Sir David Attenborough and scored by Academy Award-winner Hans Zimmer, Planet Earth: Blue Planet II takes viewers on a revelatory and magical journey into the mesmerizing world of our oceans — by turn tempestuous and serene, exquisitely beautiful and bleakly forbidding. They cover 70% of the Earth’s surface and hold 97% of all the water in the world. There is more life in the deep sea than anywhere else on Earth, and it is said we know more about the surface of Mars than the depths of our own planet. Our final frontier is the deep ocean – Earth’s “inner space.” By using breakthroughs in science and cutting-edge technology to explore this final frontier, the series reveals the astonishing characters, otherworldly places and extraordinary new animal behaviors. Warm and compelling stories about marine habitats and their characterful inhabitants will leave you emotionally invested in our oceans and the creatures who dwell there, and bring a whole new perspective to this little-known world. Over four years in production, the teams mounted 125 expeditions, visited 39 countries, and filmed on every continent and across every ocean. They spent over 6,000 hours diving underwater, filming everywhere from familiar shores to the deepest seas.

Tonight is also the series premiere of Say Yes: Wedding SOS on TLC at 9/8c. The show will focus on transforming couples who have let themselves go. From every-day life challenges including balancing kids and work and trying to keep that special spark alive, the couples featured on the show are in desperate need of a makeover for their special day. In each hour-long episode, style expert George Kotsiopoulos will work with the bride and groom and get them ready to walk down the aisle. From wardrobe and hair to veneers and tattoo removal, the couple will meet each other at the altar in front of their friends and family with a new look and, most importantly, renewed confidence as they head off into wedded bliss. Viewers will go along for the ride as they watch the couples go from drab to fab from custom suit fittings, liposuction, corrective eye surgery, microblading and laser hair removal, just to name a few.

Finally, tonight is a new episode of Saturday Night Live on NBC at 11:29/10:29c, with host Jessica Chastain and musical guest Troye Sivan.

The Casino On The Small Screen – The Most Memorable Gambling Scenes in Television

Over the years, the casino and gambling in general have featured in a wide array of television series, appearing in various titles, from cult classics such as Friends to animated fan favourite The Simpsons. This is partly because the world of gambling is extremely easy to incorporate into most scenarios and the fact that the pastime is often both peculiar and exhilarating in equal measure means that it translates to the small screen incredibly well. With that being said, there are dozens of examples of TV series dedicating entire episodes to gambling and the casino. Below are eight of our favourite scenes which serve to illustrate the added value that gambling has when incorporated properly.

The Simpsons

It’s possible that The Simpsons has referenced gambling and the casino more than any other animated show, which would make sense, as it’s the longest running series of its kind. From the very first episode, where Homer rescues Santa’s Little Helper from the greyhound track to Homer and Ned being tricked into getting married in Las Vegas, there have been a number of classic moments relating to the casino, but the episode that perfectly encapsulates everything good, bad, or indifferent about gambling is Season 5 Episode 10. The aptly named “How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Legalise Gambling” is intended to be a satirical look at Las Vegas, focusing on the panic which sweeps Springfield when plans for a casino to be built within the town are approved.
