Jenny’s Choice
I know… What we don’t need is another reality competition show – especially singing or dancing. But World of Dance is a little bit different in how the competition works, and the first episode – which I’ve seen – at least, is a lot of fun. There are three divisions to the competition: Junior (any size act, 17 years old & under), Upper (groups of 1-4, 18 years old & over), & Team (groups of 5+ dancers, all 18 years old & over). There’s no limit to the kind of dancing, from hip-hop, ballet, ballroom, stomping, & more. The judges use a point system created by the dance brand World of Dance (which is in partnership with the show and obviously where the name for the show itself came from), in which they score performance, technique, choreography, creativity, and presentation. In the first four rounds, dancers compete within their division, but in the fifth and final, the World Final round, the winner from each division will compete against each other for the grand prize of $1 million and the title “Best in the World.â€
So the competition itself is a little bit different and going to be very fun. Jennifer Lopez, NE-YO, and Derek Hough (mega-winner pro dancer from Dancing with the Stars) will be at the judges’ table, with Jenna Dewan Tatum set as host/mentor. I actually really enjoyed all three in the premiere. They all have good, constructive criticism and seem to know what they’re talking about, which doesn’t always happen on some competition shows. All in all, I have hopes that the judges, along with how they score the dancers and how the dancers are split into divisions will make this an enjoyable series.
On tonight’s episode, “The Qualifiers 1,†elite dance acts from all ages and dance genres enter the arena to showcase their artistry, precision, and athleticism to move forward in the competition.
