themuppets29smallLast week, art imitated life as The Muppets returned from hiatus, and “Up Late with Miss Piggy” was a on a mission to reinvent itself after a new brand executive was hired to try to fix the show (which wasn’t even broken in the first place). This started with making Piggy a little less abrasive and bringing more of the Muppets into the segments of her talk show. The end result for both the ABC series and the show within the show was that they were less focused on serious workplace drama and more geared toward just having fun. The episode ended with Kermit and Piggy singing a sweet duet as Denise watched jealously from the audience – so it looks like that whole publicized break-up may be coming to an end as well.

I never had any issues with the original incarnation of this series. I thought it was a fun, fresh take. I wasn’t really a fan of last week’s episode. It seemed like it was trying a bit too hard to appeal to a younger demographic, with Piggy dressing up like Miley Cyrus and twerking. However, I’m happy to say that they have eased back a bit in tonight’s episode, which I enjoyed a lot more. While I didn’t think the show needed a change – except to bring on Walter; where is he?! – but if these slight tweaks increase viewership and get the series a second season, then I’m all for it.

On tonight’s episode, “A Tail of Two Piggies,” a wardrobe malfunction involving Miss Piggy creates a scandal that could ruin her career, but Kermit and the crew come together to defend her honor. Meanwhile, Pepe and Rizzo throw a party for Gonzo to lift his spirits when he misses his ex-girlfriend.

Check out My Piggy’s wardrobe malfunction tonight on ABC at 8:30/7:30c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Limitless, Fresh Off the Boat, Marvel’s Agent Carter, Hollywood Game Night, New Girl, Grandfathered, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Grinder, The Flash, iZombie, American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson, Pitch Slapped, Teen Wolf, and The Shannara Chronicles.

lucifer28smallI was quite skeptical when I first heard about the new show Lucifer, but after watching the first two episodes, I can say that I am pleasantly surprised. There are many reasons why this show works for me, including the incredible sexy leading man and the fact that it’s a procedural with a twist, but at the end of the day it’s simply an entertaining new show to spice up my regular television landscape.

On the last episode, Lucifer showed that while he has no issue with people sinning, he takes great offense to people using God’s word and hell to scare people into donating money, which is why he scared the crap out of a guy doing just that on the street. I admit I giggled, because there’s nothing worse than a hypocrite. Chloe has been working on trying to figure out who Lucifer really is and why he didn’t exist up until 5 years ago – the idea that he really is THE Lucifer is just too far-fetched for her, I suppose. The case of the week involved a paparazzo who was accused of murder and confessed, but Chloe didn’t believe he did it, and neither did Lucifer. This sent them on a wild-goose chase to find the actual killer, which they did in the end. Although Chloe had to step in to stop Lucifer’s little game of Russian roulette between Nick and his protégé, Josh, who Nick was taking the fall for, where they try to shoot each other, only there were no bullets in Josh’s gun. In the midst of it, Chloe showed up, and Lucifer realized he was wrong and used brother Amenadiel because he knew that his arrival would slow time down just enough for Lucifer to step in and grab the bullet from Nick’s gun midair. Lucifer then realizes that he is in fact changing, and it’s due to someone in his life: Chloe.

I’m really enjoying the building relationship between Lucifer and Chloe, but I’m curious to see how long they can play this Chloe not believing he’s the devil story, because after a while, she’s going to have to figure it out.

On tonight’s episode, “The Would-Be Prince of Darkness,” when a 22-year-old future superstar quarterback wakes up to find a dead girl floating in his swimming pool, he turns to his friend, Lucifer, for help. Lucifer enlists Chloe to investigate the case, which leads to the world of big-money sports and people who will literally kill to be number one.

To see if Chloe can help clear this quarterback’s name, tune in to FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching Scorpion, Supergirl, Superstore, NCIS: LA, and Castle.

madoff23smallTonight, ABC airs the first half of its two-part Madoff original movie event, inspired by ABC News Chief Investigative Correspondent Brian Ross’s book “The Madoff Chronicle.” It is a dramatization of the rise and fall of investment advisor Bernie Madoff (Richard Dreyfuss), who pulled off the largest financial Ponzi scheme in US history. The miniseries takes a look at how the events affected Madoff’s family and associates, including wife Ruth (Blythe Danner), sons Mark (Tom Lipinski) and Andrew (Danny Defarrari), brother Peter (Peter Scolari), secretary Eleanor Squillari (Erin Cummings), and CFO Frank DiPascali (Michael Rispoli). The rest of the characters include Harry Markopolos (Frank Whaley), the securities industry executive who first discovered what Madoff was up to, Carl Shapiro (Charles Grodin), who lost billions of dollars, and Gregory Perkins (Lewis Black).

I remember hearing about Bernie Madoff on the news but never really followed all of the details. I’m looking forward to checking this out tonight and learning what really went on during this big scandal. It looks like they’ve assembled quite an amazing cast!

The first half of the film airs tonight on ABC at 8/7c, and the 2-hour conclusion airs tomorrow.

I’ll also be watching/recording Arrow, Supernatural, Young & Hungry, Baby Daddy, Man Seeking Woman, Suits, Face Off, Younger, and Teachers.

greaselivesmallWe’ve had The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, and The Wiz. Now, we get another classic: Grease. Julianne Hough (Dancing with the Stars) and Aaron Tveit (Graceland) star as the iconic Sandy and Danny, with other big names such as Ana Gasteyer, Carly Rae Jepsen, Mario Lopez, and Vanessa Hudgens among others.

What’s interesting about the production tonight is that the cast will be wearing GoPro cameras between scenes to show audiences online the frenetic chaos that goes on as they sprint from set to set and get ready to do the next scene. They WANT the audience to see the production of it, as well as enjoy the musical as they normally would, and that’s definitely something new and different.

Sing along tonight with the songs you remember and hear new ones too on FOX at 7/6c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing American Ninja Warrior, Guy’s Grocery Games, Worst Cooks in America, CSI: Cyber, & Cutthroat Kitchen.

Last week, Younger returned to TV Land to kick off its second season. Liza’s daughter Caitlyn returned home from India but decided not to stick around after she saw her mother making out with Josh, and she went off to live and work with her father for a few weeks. Ever since he learned that Liza was actually 40, Josh became obsessed with her age. Plus, he now had to lie to his friends and her coworkers to keep up Liza’s charade – and this started to put a strain on their relationship. Meanwhile, Kelsey was getting tired of being neglected at work and almost took an offer to go to another publisher. However, Charles offered her her own imprint for 20-somethings and the ability to select her own team. Josh had convinced Liza to at least tell Kelsey the truth about her age. However, just as she was about to, Kelsey shared the good news about her promotion, how she wanted Liza to join her team, and how exciting it would be to have a bunch of 26-year-olds working together. And so Liza decided that it wasn’t the right moment to come clean. However, my favorite story line from the premiere was Diana’s embarrassing one-sided flirting with Charles, followed by her being stuck in a dentist’s chair, unable to speak, as the hot young doctor flirted with Charles right above her.

This show was one of my favorite new series last year – another great show from prolific producer Darren Star! I look forward to seeing how the rest of the season plays out. How long can Liza keep her secret? Do Liza and Josh have a future together, or will she move on to start a relationship with Charles? (They seem perfect for one another.) I’m really happy to have this show back on my TV!

A tip for folks who don’t get TV Land in HD: The series is also airs on Nickelodeon (though sometimes not on the same day).

On tonight’s episode, “Like a Boss,” Liza and Kelsey launch a new imprint while facing online criticism.

See how the new imprint goes for Liza and Kelsey tonight on TV Land at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Criminal Minds, The Middle, The Goldbergs, black-ish, Second Chance, Arrow, Supernatural, Man Seeking Woman, Face Off, and Teachers.
