I’m so happy because one of my favorite new shows (possibly THE favorite) from last season, Bob Hearts Abishola, returns tonight with its season premiere. By the time the finale rolled around, Bob and Abishola were in a good place in their relationship – starting with the fact that they were actually IN a relationship. It took Abishola a little bit to come around to it, but once she did, they began to settle in to being a couple…crazy families and all.

Dottie, Bob’s mother, met a fellow stroke survivor in rehab (played by the ever charming John Ratzenberger), and while I don’t think he’ll be back right away, who knows. He may show up again in the future. The other big story was Christina, Bob’s sister, and Kofo, one of the workers from Nigeria at Bob’s sock company. They had started up a flirtation while working on naming colors of socks, and when Kofo tried to back away, having been convinced that flirting and a relationship with his boss was a bad idea, Christina went kind of “boil a bunny” scary on him. Bob and Douglas (their brother), sent her away to a “spa retreat” type place that was actually a mental health and wellness program on a ranch that she’d been to before. Apparently she’s kind of…well…let’s just say she has some issues. And they feared she wasn’t any better when she told them she’d met Randy, a wrangler.

So how will Bob & Abishola’s relationship be when the show returns tonight? How will Abishola, as a nurse, be handling the pandemic, or is the show going to keep that part of real life out of it? And will Christina be back and over both Kofo and Randy? I can’t wait to find out all that and more tonight!

On tonight’s episode, “On a Dead Guy’s Bench,” Bob enlists Tunde’s help to buy an engagement ring, but his plans to propose to Abishola are upended by her belief that a traditional marriage is more trouble than it’s worth.

Don’t miss the fun premiere tonight on CBS at 8:31/7:31c.

I’ll also be watching Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Holiday Baking Championship, Christmas Cookie Challenge, & Weakest Link.

I’m really enjoying Bob Hearts Abishola. Two episodes ago, Abishola started having romantic (not quite sexual, but going in that direction) dreams about Bob. Last week, she and Bob were chatting on their bench, in the snow, talking about the differences between America and Nigeria, and he asked her out to dinner in a really sweet moment. I loved how her family all dressed up before Bob picked her up. LOL The restaurant was kind of a snooty place, and when an older white couple looked askance at them for a moment, Bob made the joke that it was okay because they were from California. Abishola smirked and leaned over to tell them, “We’re also Jewish.” It made no sense really, but she got a kick out of it, and that made me laugh. Of course, then Bob tried to order steak and Abishola said no because of his heart. She shot down all of his decisions, and he ended up getting fish and spinach. It was totally something I could see an old married couple doing. LOL But then just as they were talking about doing something else instead of her going straight home, Bob’s sister called and said something weird was going on with their mother. After hearing the symptoms, Abishola said it sounded like their mom was having a stroke and to call 911. Sure enough, that’s what had happened. So the end of their date didn’t go like either of them thought it would, for sure! But even with such a serious topic, the show kept up the humor, sending Bob’s brother everywhere BUT the waiting area where Bob, Christina, and Abishola were waiting.

On tonight’s episode, “Tough Like a Laundromat Washing Machine,” Bob hires Abishola to take care of Dottie in his home while she recovers; Dottie has a hard time dealing with her limitations and takes it out on Abishola.

See how Abishola handles Dottie tonight on CBS at 8:30/7:30c.

I’ll also be watching 9-1-1, All Rise, Holiday Baking Championship, Rock the Block, Prodigal Son, & Christmas Cookie Challenge.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 9/23/19

Welcome back, fall TV! We’ve sure missed you around here! Because there’s so much on this week, we have multiple picks almost every night. Mostly we’ll feature some new shows, but some returning faves may or may not make the list as well. So check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Jenny’s Choice #1

My first pick tonight is the new drama on CBS, All Rise, although I’d coin it almost a dramedy, rather than a straight drama. I’ve seen the first couple of episodes, and there’s a lot to laugh about in addition to the courtroom drama action. The show stars Simone Missick (Misty Knight on Marvel’s Luke Cage & Marvel’s The Defenders) as Lola Carmichael, former deputy district attorney turned newly appointed judge. Despite what her new judicial assistant Sherri (Ruthie Ann Miles, probably most famous for her roles on Broadway, but she was also in a few episodes of The Americans as well) advises her, Lola is determined to push the boundaries and challenge the expectations of what a judge can be. Unlike the older, stuffier judges who push cases through in rapid fire, Lola is determined to give each case her all, no matter how backed up her case files are. It’s that caring concern mixed with the humor she brings that makes her fun to watch.

Also starring are Wilson Bethel (Hart of Dixie) as Mark Callan, a deputy district attorney who has been best friends with Lola since college; Marg Helgenberger (CSI) as Supervisory Judge Lisa Benner, an influential, powerful woman tasked with overseeing Lola’s transition into her new job; Jessica Camacho (Taken, The Flash, Sleepy Hollow) as Emily Lopez, a young, empathetic public defender; J. Alex Brinson (Travelers) as Luke Watkins, a court bailiff by day, law student by night who takes a liking to Emily; and Lindsay Mendez (best known for her roles on Broadway) as Sara Castillo, a court reporter and reliable source of intel and advice.

I really loved this pilot. It’s funny, but it’s got heart too, and I can’t wait to see more.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” newly appointed Judge Lola Carmichael works to get justice for people amidst a flawed legal process.

Meet Lola, Mark, and the others tonight on CBS at 9/8c.
