Jenny’s Choice

There are several things on tonight that I wanted to recommend, but I decided to stay true to my cop show-loving heart, so my pick tonight is the series premiere of East New York. Not only is it a cop show, but the cast has two members who I love in everything I’ve watched them in: Jimmy Smits and Richard Kind.

Amanda Warren stars as Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood, the newly promoted boss of the 74th Precinct in East New York — a working-class neighborhood on the edge of Brooklyn in the midst of social upheaval and the early seeds of gentrification. With family ties to the area, Haywood is determined to deploy creative methods to protect her beloved community with the help of her officers and detectives. But first, she has the daunting task of getting them on board, as some are skeptical of her promotion, and others resist the changes she is desperate to make. Her team includes her mentor, shrewd veteran two-star Chief John Suarez (Smits); Marvin Sandeford (Ruben Santiago Hudson), a highly respected training officer and expert on the neighborhood; Tommy Killian (Kevin Rankin), a detective with some old-school approaches to policing; Capt. Stan Yenko (Kind), Haywood’s gregarious and efficient right hand; Crystal Morales (Elizabeth Rodriguez), an intuitive detective who can’t be intimidated; Andre Bentley (Lavel Schley), a trainee from an upper middle-class background; and ambitious patrol officer Brandy Quinlan (Olivia Luccardi), the sole volunteer to live in a local housing project as part of Haywood’s plan to bridge the gap between police and community. Regina Haywood has a vision: she and the squad of the 74th Precinct will not only serve their community — they’ll also become part of it.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” Amanda Warren is promoted to be boss of the 74th precinct in East New York, where she must get her crew on board — but some are skeptical of her promotion.

Check out the latest cop drama tonight on CBS at a special time of 9:30/8:30c.

I’ll also be watching Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire, SEAL Team, Celebrity Jeopardy!, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, Family Law, Halloween Wars, Outrageous Pumpkins, & The Rookie.

The Equalizer Season 2 DVD Review

Season 2 of The Equalizer was just released September 20, to the delight of fans. In season 2, Robyn McCall is reeling from the fallout of Delilah’s discovery that her mother is “The Equalizer.” While McCall struggles to reconnect with Delilah, she is dismayed to learn that her vigilante profile is growing exponentially online.

Just as McCall considers ending her work at The Equalizer due to the social chatter and the district attorney’s commitment to bringing her to justice, she takes on an unexpected client: Detective Marcus Dante. Dante approaches McCall to help him find a highly tactical and untraceable group of bank robbers who killed and injured multiple police officers in a recent bank heist. Together, they attempt to run down the criminals and are shocked when their investigation leads them to the highest levels of US intelligence and American politics.

This 4-disc collection includes all 18 episodes, along with exclusive deleted scenes and (my favorite) gag reel.

Be sure to get the season 4 DVD now so you can rewatch your favorite episodes! The Equalizer Season 2 DVD

There is SO MUCH ON tonight, but since I want to really try to limit how many I’ll pick, my top pick tonight is the series premiere of So Help Me Todd. Marcia Gay Harden and Skylar Astin star as razor-sharp, meticulous attorney Margaret Wright and Todd, her talented but aimless son whom she hires as her law firm’s in-house investigator. As the black sheep of the Wright family, Todd is a laidback, quick-thinking, former private detective who fell on hard times after his flexible interpretation of the law got his license revoked. Margaret’s penchant for excellence and strict adherence to the law is at complete odds with Todd’s scrappy methods of finding his way through sticky situations. When Todd inadvertently teams with his mother on a case, she’s surprised to find herself duly impressed by – and proud of – his crafty ability to sleuth out information with his charm and his wide-ranging tech savvy. At last, Margaret sees a way to put her son on a “suitable” path to living an adult, financially solvent life she approves of, and she asks him to join her firm. Todd agrees, since it means getting his license back and once again doing the job he excels at and loves. Mother and son working together is a big first step toward mending their fragile, dysfunctional relationship, and they may even come away with a better understanding of each other. But whether Todd and Margaret will be able to accept each other for who they are is another case entirely. It also stars Inga Schlingmann, Madeline Wise, Rosa Arredondo, & Tristen J. Winger.

Marcia Gay Harden and Skylar Astin are both fantastic and fun to watch, and the previews definitely make it seem like this is going to be both funny and heartwarming, so I’ve been so looking forward to seeing it since it was first announced. I’m excited to check it out tonight.

On tonight’s pilot episode, m eticulous attorney Margaret Wright hires her scruffy son as her law firm’s in-house investigator.

Catch the series premiere tonight on CBS at 9:01/8:01c.

I’ll also be watching Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, Hell’s Kitchen, Law & Order, Ghosts (YES!), Law & Order: SVU, CSI: Vegas (YES!), & Law & Order: OC.

Blue Bloods: The Twelfth Season DVD Review

The Blue Bloods: The Twelfth Season DVD was released on August 30. The five-disc collection includes every action-packed episode along with exclusive bonus features from the latest season, including cast interviews, deleted scenes and more.

This is an incredibly dependable show. You know what you’re going to get—the good guys are the good guys. There’s no real conspiracy theories or wishy-washy characters who you aren’t sure if you can/should root for or not. It’s one of the best parts about the series, in my opinion. This season, Danny seeks the help of Maggie Gibson, a psychic medium, during his investigation into the tragic murder of a two-year-old boy, while Frank finds himself at odds with the mayor over how to protect the city after a recent uptick in crime. Also, Jamie and Eddie defend Officer Witten when she receives departmental and public backlash for pulling her gun on an unarmed man during an arrest at a local deli, and Erin investigates a murder case from 1993, in which the sole witness was her boss, DA Kimberly Crawford, who was 13 years old at the time of the crime.

The 5-disc DVD collection includes all 20 episodes plus deleted scenes, a gag reel (my favorite!), and three featurettes:

My Best Friend – In season 5, Steve Schirripa joined the cast as Detective Anthony Abetemarco. Since then, Anthony and Erin (Bridget Moynahan) have become unlikely best friends. In this featurette, Steve, Bridget, and the writers discuss Anthony and the special relationship between the two characters.

Directed by Bridget Moynahan – Bridget made her directorial debut this season with episode 1217, “Hidden Motives.” She talks about her decision and experience being behind the camera, and we hear from the cast and crew about her efforts.

The Story of the Reagans: Season 12 – Twelve seasons in, and we are still learning more about the Reagan family. In this featurette, the cast and producers talk about the individual journeys of the beloved family.

Don’t miss this chance to take home your copy of a fun show for the whole family! Blue Bloods Season 12 DVD

Megan’s Choice

One thing that hasn’t changed and likely never will is my love of procedurals—I can’t help it. I just can’t get enough. I am aware that most of them are very similar, but for me it’s the cast that makes me fall in love with each particular show.

Speaking of casts I love, FBI returns tonight for its fifth season. I enjoy the case-of-the-week style this show presents, but I also truly enjoy the stories surrounding the characters themselves. Maggie and OA are always a great duo to watch, and I look forward to Maggie’s return this season. I am also looking forward to seeing more growth with Jubal and his family—I am expecting to see his son get into some trouble this season and see how it affects Jubal. Overall, this show never disappoints and keeps us guessing as to who the unsub is every episode. If you’re looking for a show that you can watch one episode of and not get lost, then this is the show for you—but be warned, you’ll get hooked just like I did.

On tonight’s season premiere, “Hero’s Journey,” the team pivots when their sting operation to secure a massive bomb from an illegal broker leads them to discover that the device is already in the wrong hands. Also, Jubal’s promise to be present at his son’s birthday party is put to the test as the case continues to heat up.

Find out how the case impacts Jubal’s home life tonight at 8/7c on CBS.

I’ll also be watching The Voice, The Resident, FBI: International, Monarch, FBI: Most Wanted, and New Amsterdam.
