As a kid, I couldn’t wait for each new episode of Stephen Spielberg’s anthology series Amazing Stories. Each week the show would take viewers on a whole new adventure, transporting everyday characters into some fantastical new world and story. It was like a more family friendly Twilight Zone, with the movie magic and wonder of Stephen Spielberg and starring an all-star cast. Today, Apple TV+ kicks off a 5-week reboot of this classic series, this time with longer, hour-long stories. As I checked out today’s premiere, I was instantly transported back 35 years when that familiar theme song started playing.

On the first episode, “The Cellar,” brothers Jake (Micah Stock, The Right Stuff) and Sam (Dylan O’Brien, Teen Wolf, Maze Runner) are restoring an old house from the early 20th century, when something magical occurs. Jake is older and more mature. He’s married, with a newly adopted baby at home, and wants his brother to join his construction business full time. But Sam is a bit more free-spirited. He likes to have fun, flipping through Tinder to find a one-night-stand while at work, and doesn’t really want to settle down or know what he wants to do with his life. While the brothers are doing some demo on the house, Sam discovers a box hidden in the fireplace, containing an old photo of a beautiful woman in a wedding dress and a matchbook with a code word written on the inside. The next day, while they are working on the house, a siren goes off and a major storm quickly moves in. Sam heads down to the storm cellar, where he hears a disorienting, high-pitched buzzing, and then suddenly finds himself transported back in time 100 years. He soon finds himself face to face with Evelyn (Victoria Pedretti, You, The Haunting of Hill House), the woman from the photo, who is holding a shotgun and demanding he leave her home.

After the initial shock and things calm down, Sam learns that Evelyn is unhappy. She has a deep love of music, but her mother (Sasha Alexander, Rizzoli & Isles) doesn’t approve of her spending time on such foolish things. Her family is in danger of losing their home, and so it has been arranged for Evelyn to marry a widower she doesn’t even love. Evelyn doesn’t really have much choice in the matter and is prepared to accept her fate in life. That is, until she starts falling for Sam, who tells her about a future where women can be and do anything they want. Now, they must figure out how to get back to the year 2019, and they only have 10 days until Evelyn is to be married.

It was so great to have this show back on my TV after so many years. I really enjoyed the premiere – it had that same sense of wonder and adventure I remember from the original series. While the show is mostly family friendly, there were a couple of minor bits of dialogue in this episode that may cause parents of younger children to take pause…perhaps it’s a PG-13, but there was nothing too shocking. If this first episode is any indication of the level of production value and story we can expect from the series, it makes me really excited to see what other tales and actors will show up this season.

I’ll also be watching/recording Spenser Confidential and Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector.

All Rise is one of my favorite shows this season for so many reasons, but one of the biggest is the fact that it is a female-led drama. Lola is a strong female judge, but she is also flawed, which makes her relatable to all of us. I enjoy the way she leads her courtroom not only with her brains but her heart, which makes her a more effective judge in my opinion. Her friendship with Mark is adorable, and I love how much they banter like siblings. It is a true platonic relationship, which in television doesn’t happen very often between men and women, so it really gives this show an edge over the other legal dramas.

On the last episode, Luke went a little overboard with a romantic gesture for Emily, which included a flash mob and a fish as a valentine’s gift. Emily didn’t know how to respond, because her ex-husband used elaborate gifts and gestures to make it up to her after he had been abusive. They came to an arrangement and understanding about how she needs him to approach these situations, and he was very receptive. Luke is such a sweet man, and I hope that they can develop their relationship further. Speaking of relationships… Lola and her husband are doing the long-distance thing, which I think will result in her marriage failing, but time will tell. Finally, Lola has been asked to help with Judge Brenner’s campaign research, and she is uncomfortable with the situation. She has already found out some questionable things about Brenner’s past at the other firms, and she is uncertain whether or not she should dig deeper. It is difficult to say how this story will play out, but I am invested completely in the outcome.

On tonight’s episode, “My Fair Lockdown,” Lola’s world spins out of control when she presides over the trial of Emily’s client, who rejects the rule of law and seizes control of the courtroom.

To see if they can survive this dangerous situation, tune in to CBS at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching Bull, America’s Got Talent: The Champions, Bob Hearts Abishola, The Neighborhood, 9-1-1: Lone Star, Prodigal Son, and All American.

It’s been 20 years (the show premiered in May 2000) and 40 seasons of Survivor. That seems crazy, doesn’t it? What’s even crazier is that tonight, 20 of the previous winners are back to compete for not $1 but $2 million! If you’ve been around since the beginning, you’re going to recognize many of the names, but if you’re like me and haven’t watched in a big handful of seasons, you won’t recognize some of them too.

First, here’s a list of the competing players:

Adam Klein (28), Winner of “Millennials vs. Gen-X” (2016); Amber Mariano (40), Winner of “All-Stars” (2004); Ben Driebergen (36), Winner of “Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers” (2017); Danni Boatwright (43), Winner of “Guatemala” (2005); Denise Stapley (48), Winner of “Philippines” (2012); Ethan Zohn (45), Winner of “Africa” (2001); Jeremy Collins (41), Winner of “Second Chance” (2015); Kim Spradlin-Wolfe (36), Winner of “One World” (2012); Michele Fitzgerald (29), Winner of “Kaôh Rōng” (2016); Natalie Anderson (33), Winner of “San Juan del Sur” (2014); Nick Wilson (28), Winner of “David vs. Goliath” (2018); Parvati Shallow (36), Winner of “Fans vs. Favorites” (2008); Rob Mariano (43), Winner of “Redemption Island” (2011); Sandra Diaz-Twine (44), Winner of “Pearl Islands” (2003) & “Heroes vs. Villains” (2010); Sarah Lacina (34), Winner of “Game Changers” (2017); Sophie Georgina Clarke (29), Winner of “South Pacific” (2011); Anthony “Tony” Vlachos (45), Winner of “Cagayan” (2014); Tyson Apostol (39), Winner of “Blood vs. Water” (2013); Wendell Holland (35), Winner of “Ghost Island” (2018); & Yul Kwon (44), Winner of “Cook Islands” (2006).

If you read that list closely, yes, you’ll have noticed both Boston Rob AND his wife Amber are playing. I’m super excited about that. I love them both. But my pick has to be Ethan Zohn, who I remember watching and rooting for during the Africa season. He is a soccer guy, and my brother and sister both grew up playing soccer, so I was drawn to him from the beginning, and he was just a nice guy. Since his season, he survived cancer, so he’s feeling super lucky and happy to be back. I wasn’t thrilled about Parvati, although I read an interview where she talked about how much she’s changed since her season, and I was pretty happy about that until I saw another clip of her and it sounded like same old, same old. Another one I’m super not happy about being back is Sandra, who has already won twice. It isn’t that I care that she’s won twice, but it’s how she won. I know, I know… My like of Boston Rob to the contrary, I like to root for the players who play fairly, do well on the challenges, and don’t backstab their way through the game. And yes, I’m well aware that’s part of how the game is played! LOL But it doesn’t have to be. *shrug* Regardless, it should be a lot of fun being back with some of our favorite previous winners and seeing how they handle the new twists and turns that have cropped up since their original time on the show.

On tonight’s 2-hour episode, “Greatest of the Greats,” former champions battle it out in a classic Survivor challenge to ring in their first immunity win, while also navigating an all-new twist involving fire tokens.

Don’t miss seeing how this hopefully epic season begins tonight on CBS at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching Chicago Med, The Goldbergs, Schooled, America’s Top Dog, Chicago Fire, Guy’s Grocery Games, Modern Family, Lego Masters, Single Parents, 68 Whiskey, Chicago PD, Criminal Minds, & Stumptown.

Tonight, NBC kicks off the new comedy Indebted. Young parents Dave (Adam Pally, Happy Endings) and Rebecca (Abby Elliott, Odd Mom Out) are thrilled that they are finally beyond the years of changing diapers and dealing with crying babies and are ready to enjoy their married life. However, that quickly changes when Dave’s parents, Debbie (Fran Drescher, The Nanny) and Stew (Steven Webber, Wings), show up at their door. Years of mismanaging their money and spending beyond their means has finally caught up with Dave’s parents, and now they are broke. So while contractor Dave fixes up their home to sell, Debbie and Stew move in with him, and Dave and Rebecca soon discover that they need to act more like the parents to these child-like adults. Also living with them is Dave’s sister Joanna (Jessy Hodges, Barry).

While I wasn’t bowled over by tonight’s premiere, it did make me laugh a bit. Debbie and Stew can be a bit much after a while, but I did really enjoy the chemistry between Dave and Rebecca. The series has a wonderful cast – I am thrilled to have both Fran Descher and Adam Pally back on my TV – and so I’ll withhold final judgement on this show until I see a few more episodes.

On tonight’s premiere, “Everybody’s Talking About the Pilot,” young parents Dave and Rebecca end up having to take care of Dave’s parents, who have mishandled their finances and need help to pay down a sizable debt.

Meet the newest family on the block tonight on NBC at 9:30/8:30c.

Tonight, after just four short-but-delightful seasons, NBC’s The Good Place finally comes to an end. Last week, the gang finally made it to the Good Place. Michael was worried he wouldn’t be welcome, being a demon and all, but the committee members whisked him off to give him a job. Meanwhile, the four humans walked into their welcome celebration arm-in-arm, which caused the party space to be an eclectic mix of elements from all four of their ideal celebrations. There was also a green Holodeck-like door that they could go through to see or experience anything their hearts and minds desired.

After Michael signed his contract, the committee members quit, leaving him as the sole person in charge of the Good Place – and things weren’t really as good there as they seemed. At the party, Chidi and Eleanor were also about to learn this fact. Chidi was excited to meet philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria (Lisa Kudrow), but it quickly became clear that something was off with her. It turns out that having an eternity to do and see whatever you want is still an eternity, and eventually you become exhausted. And knowing there was no end to this boredom caused malaise and their brains to just slowly turn to mush.

So Michael and the gang had to come up with a way to fix the Good Place and make things better for all of these folks who had already been there for thousands of years. After thinking for a while, the team came up with a plan– they would create another door. When folks in the Good Place felt that they had had their fill of eternity, they could just enter it and move on. This idea that they weren’t stuck there instantly improved the moral of the residents. It seems like a simple fix, but is that all that is needed?

Tonight, the series comes to an end with a special 90-minute event, including a series discussion with the cast/creators. How will it all come to an end? Will we see how our four humans choose to spend their time in the Good Place? Will they eventually tire of it and want to move on? Will there be yet another twist to this story? I can’t wait to see how this ends, but I am going to really miss this show. It is easily one of my all-time favorites.

On tonight’s series finale, “Whenever You’re Ready,” various conversations occur, between various groups of people. (Such a descriptive and spoilery episode description!)

See how things end in the Good Place tonight on NBC starting at 8:30/7:30c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Grey’s Anatomy, A Million Little Things, Young Sheldon, The Unicorn, Carol’s Second Act, Superstore, Outmatched, and Everything’s Gonna Be Okay.
