Jenny’s Choice #1

My first pick tonight is the new single-camera comedy on ABC, Single Parents. Looking at the premise, I assumed that it would be one of those shows that I liked but that critics didn’t, but from almost everything I’ve read so far on TV sites/blogs, critics are really enjoying it. And I have to say that I’ve seen the pilot as well and I loved it too.

The show focuses on a group of single parents all raising their kids (mainly 7-year-olds) as…well…single parents. They’re sarcastic, funny, and don’t hesitate to say out loud what so many of us parents want to say but don’t. Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond among others) especially has a dry sense of humor and seems to have few boundaries – such as saying kids are the perfect size to wash cars as his twin daughters are outside washing his car. When the small group of single parents meets a new father/daughter (Will & Sophie) at school, they quickly learn he’s a single father as well, but there’s one big difference: Will has fully immersed himself into single parenthood. His life revolves around his daughter and nothing else, including who he himself is as a man. The group decides it’s up to them to bring him out of the parenting vortex and remind him he’s allowed to have a life while still being a loving and attentive father to his daughter.

The cast is great. Besides Brad Garrett, who is always exceptionally funny in everything he does, it includes “parents” Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl), Taran Killam (Saturday Night Live), Kimrie Lewis, & Jake Choi, as well as kids Marlow Barkley, Tyler Wladis, Devin Trey Campbell, & twins Mia and Ella Allan. (And a baby who plays Jake Choi’s character’s infant son. Choi is brilliant as a new dad. So funny.)

I urge you to give this one a chance. It’s really quite amusing!

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” Will Cooper has been so focused on raising his daughter, Sophie, he’s lost sight of who he is as a man and has headed deep into the parental vortex. When the other single parents – Angie, Douglas, Poppy, and Jake – at his daughter’s school see just how far down the rabbit hole of PTA, parenting and princesses Will has gone, they band together to get him out in the world and make him realize that being a great parent doesn’t mean sacrificing everything about your own identity.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/9/18

Jenny’s Choice

As I watched last week’s Chicago PD, in that final minute, I texted my husband: Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit!. He immediately responded, sounding worried. I’d scared him. But I was shocked. Olinsky had been stabbed repeatedly, and as he slid to the floor, it didn’t look good. That was, of course, after Voight’s plan with the judge goes awry thanks to Denny Woods, which meant Al didn’t get out on bail. I swear, Woods is one step ahead of them every time! And after Al was denied bail, Voight decided it was time to come clean with Woods. Good for him. He went to Woods’s place and said it was time to make things right, basically telling Woods that he would confess if he got assurances that Olinsky was released from prison and not charged for anything. There was a story about guns and Halstead and Atwater going undercover, and it was a good one, but for the most part, the episode was about Voight and Olinksy and that ongoing story.

So did Al survive? Will Voight learn about the attack before he confesses it all to Woods? Will the Woods/Voight conflict finally come to a head? You’ll find out all that and more with tonight’s season finale.

On tonight’s episode, “Homecoming,” tensions run high as Intelligence seeks justice for Olinsky after he’s stabbed in prison. Antonio’s loyalty is put to the test and Woods looks to take down Voight once and for all.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/18/18

Jenny’s Choice #1

Oh, poor Garcia on Criminal Minds. It was so sad last week but so much fun learning more about her past. We knew her parents had been killed when she was younger, but to learn that they’d been out searching for her when she was out past curfew made my heart hurt at how much that had affected her. In the end, after spending time with her stepbrother Carlos and meeting with both the man who was up for parole (who was a boy when he drove drunk and killed her parents) and his sister, Garcia dug deep and realized she needed to forgive, rather than continue to hold on to her anger and bitterness, which is what she told the parole board. Unfortunately, that came as a shock to Carlos, who said he couldn’t even look at her afterward, when she told him why their parents had been out that night. My one complaint about that story line was that she was 18, so why her parents were so freaked out about her being out a little past curfew, I don’t know. If she were 15 or 16, maybe. But 18? I don’t know…

As for the case of the week, when the CDC suspected bioterrorism was behind a string of suspicious deaths, they called in the BAU. Turned out to be one man, and it wasn’t so much bioterrorism as we think of it as it was revenge. His parents’ restaurant was forced to close, so when his father died (his mother had passed away not long after the restaurant’s closure), he flipped and started getting back at everyone he thought played any sort of part in it. It was an okay case, but the focus for me was obviously Garcia. LOL

Tonight is the two-episode season finale. It’s been teased that not everyone will make it out alive. So who is it? I don’t want any of them to go, but there are some more than others that would make me angry if we lost them. Guess I’ll have to wait till tonight to (hopefully) find out, because I’ve also read that it’s a cliffhanger ending. Ahhhhh!

On tonight’s first episode, “Mixed Signals,” the BAU is called to Taos, N.M. to investigate an UnSub who is targeting his victims’ temporal lobes.

Then on the season finale, “Believer,” when Reid discovers former FBI Special Agent Owen Quinn (James Urbaniak) locked inside a storage unit, the BAU questions the credibility of Quinn’s bizarre accounts of searching for an UnSub that he named “The Strangler.”

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/11/18

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, Syfy’s outer space drama, The Expanse, returns for its third season. Last season, the crew of the Rocinante learned that the protomolecule had taken over Eros station and was heading directly for Earth. Miller sacrificed himself, causing the asteroid to crash into Venus. While this was happening, there was a mutiny on Tycho station, and the Belters managed to steal some of Earth’s nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, on Ganymede, the largest moon on Jupiter and home to the bio-domes that produced food for both Earth and Mars, Martian Bobbie discovered that her whole crew had been killed during a secret test of a new Martian weapon…a weaponized version of the protomolecule created by a scientist hired by Jules Mao. He was experimenting on children with a rare disease, using the protomolecule to mutate them into monsters. Bobbie sought asylum on Earth after learning that the Martians were trying to use her to cover up their weapons test. However, Avasarala was herself in danger after her own people turned on her.

Meanwhile, Holden and the gang teamed up with Prax to help him find his daughter Mei, one of the children being used for the experiments. Before they could find her, the Rocinante was attacked by one of the proto-mosters. They managed to lure it out of the ship and fry it in space using the ship’s blasters. Afterwards, Naomi admitted to Holden that, instead of burning up their sample of the protomolecule in the sun, she had given it to Fred Johnson — since the Earth and Mars both already had samples of the protomolecule, she figured the Belters should have it as well. As the season ended, Earth was investigating the crash on Venus when the protomolecule separated The Arboghast piece by piece, like a set of LEGOs.

What is this protomolecule, what can it do, and what does it want? How will Holden and the others react to Naomi’s news? Can Bobbie and Avasarala escape, and if they do, where can/will they go? There’s a war brewing between Earth, Mars, and the Belt, and all three sides are armed with weapons and the protomolecule. Can any side truly come out victorious from this situation? Tonight’s action-packed premiere picks up immediately where the second season left off. It’s a fun, exciting ride, and I look forward to seeing how the rest of the season plays out and what lies ahead for the characters.

On tonight’s season premiere, “Fight or Flight,” the Rocinante crew deals with the fallout over Naomi’s betrayal while caught in the middle of the war between Earth and Mars; Avasarala and Bobbie hatch an escape plan.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 3/21/18

Jenny’s Choice #1

Oh snap! Last week’s Chicago PD might have been the most perfectly titled episode to date: “Breaking Point.” The case itself was okay – a prominent alderman was killed, and of course the team solved the case. But the bigger story in my opinion was when Woods came after Olinsky. Apparently a hair of Olinsky’s was found on the dead body of Voight’s son’s killer, and a witness saw a woman in the area as well. Woods, of course, is trying to get to Voight through Olinsky, and it seems like Olinsky is going to hold steady…but when he went to Voight with the news about the witness being credible and said they should talk to Erin to get their stories straight, he may have run into Voight’s “breaking point” in terms of his loyalty to Olinsky: Erin. He said no, they didn’t want to do that yet, or something to that effect. And right then is when Olinsky realized that if it came down to Erin or him for Voight’s loyalty, he would not come out on top. Voight better do something quick if he wants to keep Woods from hearing the whole story from Olinsky!

I’m so excited about tonight’s episode. We get to learn more about Upton’s past, AND Bosch…I mean Titus Weller is guest starring! I love him, and it makes the time until the new season of Bosch starts next month!

On tonight’s episode, “Ghosts,” Upton brings back an old undercover identity to help take down a meth ring spearheaded by a former criminal contact. And with pressure from Woods mounting, Voight calls in a favor for Olinsky.
