Jenny’s Choice

I’m so excited that Criminal Minds is back, especially given how last season ended on the cliffhanger of Garcia being kidnapped and Reid being forced at gunpoint to help the bad guys, lest Garcia be killed. In this case, the bad guys were the cult members headed by the guy (called the Messiah) who was cutting out their victims’ hyoid bones. The BAU learned about it when long-missing FBI Agent Quinn was found in a storage unit – alive. At first they thought he was part of the cult, but they later learned he was just as much a victim. They had the Messiah in custody, but at the end of the episode, when Garcia rode down to the garage in the elevator with Quinn and another FBI agent, Mary Meadows, we quickly realized that Meadows was the one who was part of the cult, when she shot Quinn and kidnapped Garcia, turning her over to her henchmen (heh). Reid was then ordered by Meadows to help her get the Messiah out of the FBI’s custody or she would have Garcia shot.

Since both Garcia and Reid were safe from the previous season’s cliffhanger ending, I suppose it’s only fair that they be the two in jeopardy this past season. Given this is a show that doesn’t really hesitate to kill off or say good-bye to their characters, I never take for granted the safety of characters left in jeopardy during a cliffhanger ending. Sure, if either Garcia or Reid are gone, there would be a huge hole in the team/show. As we’ve seen previously, no one can really take Garcia’s place (Kevin, anyone? Gak.), and Reid is in a class of his own. It’s easy to find another good-looking guy who can kick in doors (as evidenced by the two it took to replace Morgan. 😉 ), and there are any number of strong females who could replace JJ or Emily (although, as we’ve seen, they aren’t exactly easy to replace either, since those characters are so beloved). But Reid’s big brain and memory, etc, would be hard to replicate without being a clone, and then…what’s the point of having someone new? So you’d think they’d both be safe. But given that this premiere is the show’s 300th episode, it’s a big one, and if they were going to kill or send either one off, now would be the time to do it, I suppose! (I’ve seen the episode, btw, so I know the answer to all that supposition. But now you have some things to worry about, just like I did…and am? Maybe… *cue evil laugh*)

On tonight’s episode, “300,” when Reid and Garcia are abducted by Benjamin Merva (Michael Hogan), it’s up to the rest of the team to find them. The BAU finds surprising clues in their own history to solve why the two heroes have been targeted by a mass murderer. It’s a race to save them before a “Believers” prophecy is fulfilled.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/18/18

Jenny’s Choice #1

Oh, poor Garcia on Criminal Minds. It was so sad last week but so much fun learning more about her past. We knew her parents had been killed when she was younger, but to learn that they’d been out searching for her when she was out past curfew made my heart hurt at how much that had affected her. In the end, after spending time with her stepbrother Carlos and meeting with both the man who was up for parole (who was a boy when he drove drunk and killed her parents) and his sister, Garcia dug deep and realized she needed to forgive, rather than continue to hold on to her anger and bitterness, which is what she told the parole board. Unfortunately, that came as a shock to Carlos, who said he couldn’t even look at her afterward, when she told him why their parents had been out that night. My one complaint about that story line was that she was 18, so why her parents were so freaked out about her being out a little past curfew, I don’t know. If she were 15 or 16, maybe. But 18? I don’t know…

As for the case of the week, when the CDC suspected bioterrorism was behind a string of suspicious deaths, they called in the BAU. Turned out to be one man, and it wasn’t so much bioterrorism as we think of it as it was revenge. His parents’ restaurant was forced to close, so when his father died (his mother had passed away not long after the restaurant’s closure), he flipped and started getting back at everyone he thought played any sort of part in it. It was an okay case, but the focus for me was obviously Garcia. LOL

Tonight is the two-episode season finale. It’s been teased that not everyone will make it out alive. So who is it? I don’t want any of them to go, but there are some more than others that would make me angry if we lost them. Guess I’ll have to wait till tonight to (hopefully) find out, because I’ve also read that it’s a cliffhanger ending. Ahhhhh!

On tonight’s first episode, “Mixed Signals,” the BAU is called to Taos, N.M. to investigate an UnSub who is targeting his victims’ temporal lobes.

Then on the season finale, “Believer,” when Reid discovers former FBI Special Agent Owen Quinn (James Urbaniak) locked inside a storage unit, the BAU questions the credibility of Quinn’s bizarre accounts of searching for an UnSub that he named “The Strangler.”

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/11/18

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, Syfy’s outer space drama, The Expanse, returns for its third season. Last season, the crew of the Rocinante learned that the protomolecule had taken over Eros station and was heading directly for Earth. Miller sacrificed himself, causing the asteroid to crash into Venus. While this was happening, there was a mutiny on Tycho station, and the Belters managed to steal some of Earth’s nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, on Ganymede, the largest moon on Jupiter and home to the bio-domes that produced food for both Earth and Mars, Martian Bobbie discovered that her whole crew had been killed during a secret test of a new Martian weapon…a weaponized version of the protomolecule created by a scientist hired by Jules Mao. He was experimenting on children with a rare disease, using the protomolecule to mutate them into monsters. Bobbie sought asylum on Earth after learning that the Martians were trying to use her to cover up their weapons test. However, Avasarala was herself in danger after her own people turned on her.

Meanwhile, Holden and the gang teamed up with Prax to help him find his daughter Mei, one of the children being used for the experiments. Before they could find her, the Rocinante was attacked by one of the proto-mosters. They managed to lure it out of the ship and fry it in space using the ship’s blasters. Afterwards, Naomi admitted to Holden that, instead of burning up their sample of the protomolecule in the sun, she had given it to Fred Johnson — since the Earth and Mars both already had samples of the protomolecule, she figured the Belters should have it as well. As the season ended, Earth was investigating the crash on Venus when the protomolecule separated The Arboghast piece by piece, like a set of LEGOs.

What is this protomolecule, what can it do, and what does it want? How will Holden and the others react to Naomi’s news? Can Bobbie and Avasarala escape, and if they do, where can/will they go? There’s a war brewing between Earth, Mars, and the Belt, and all three sides are armed with weapons and the protomolecule. Can any side truly come out victorious from this situation? Tonight’s action-packed premiere picks up immediately where the second season left off. It’s a fun, exciting ride, and I look forward to seeing how the rest of the season plays out and what lies ahead for the characters.

On tonight’s season premiere, “Fight or Flight,” the Rocinante crew deals with the fallout over Naomi’s betrayal while caught in the middle of the war between Earth and Mars; Avasarala and Bobbie hatch an escape plan.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/4/18

Kyle’s Choice

Last week Zach Braff returned to television in the new ABC comedy Alex, Inc.. In the premiere, Alex suddenly decided to quit his job working at a radio station in order to launch a new podcast company. His ragtag support team in this venture are his second cousin Eddie (who can sell anything) and his young former producer from the radio station (who is infatuated with Alex). While Alex’s wife supported his decision, Alex initially found it a little difficult to balance spending time with his two children and starting a new career. However, Alex soon found his groove and made his company’s first podcast all about what he and his family were going through as he launched his new business.

I was a bit skeptical when I first saw the ads for this series, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the first few episodes. This cast is hilarious and have such great chemistry right from the get go. Alex and his wife and kids feel like a real family, and their interactions with and reactions to one another feel so genuine. The series quickly finds a nice blend between the office and home life stories. And I also appreciate how the creators of the show found an appropriate and organic way to work in that wonderful, familiar Scrubs-style narration that Zach Braff is so good at. This show is a lot of fun and is definitely worth adding to your DVR!

On tonight’s episode, “The Wax Museum,” Eddie and Deirdre compete for Alex’s time; Alex does not like Rooni’s handmade costume for Ben’s class project on famous people.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 3/28/18

Jenny’s Choice

In his first full-time TV gig since Scrubs, Zach Braff is back as Alex Schuman, a married father of two who quits his prominent job to pursue his dream of his own podcast company. Unfortunately, it’s not going to be as easy as he thinks. Thankfully, he has the support of his wife Rooni (Tiya Sircar, who played the Vicky/Real Eleanor/Denise on The Good Place) and kids Ben (Elisha Henig, who has guest starred in a good number of shows) and Soraya (newcomer Audyssie James. Joining Alex at his new podcast company are his cousin Eddie (Michael Imperioli, The Sopranos & more) and former producer Deirdre (relative newcomer Hillary Anne Matthews).

The previews for this seem adorable, and I am so excited for Zach Braff’s return to television. Tiya Sircar was a scene stealer on The Good Place, so I’m hopeful she’ll be fun to watch as Alex’s wife. The show is based on Alex Blumberg’s successful podcast “StartUp,” and Blumberg and Braff also service as executive producers, with Braff also playing a directorial role.

On tonight’s episode, “The Unfair Advantage,” with the help of wife Rooni and their children, Alex Schuman quits his prominent job to start his own podcast company telling real stories that matter. He hires his cousin Eddie and former producer, Deirdre, to help achieve his dream. Meanwhile, Ben performs magic at the school talent show which teaches Alex an important lesson about his future.

Meet Alex and his family tonight on ABC at 8:30/7:30c.
