Tonight, Veep returns to HBO for its sixth season. When we last left off, the state of the presidency was left to a vote by the Senate. Tom James offered Selina the position of vice president should he win the presidency, but she turned this down, saying she would rather be Secretary of State. Selina tried everything to improve public opinion of her, and Jonah even became a Senator so he could vote for her. However, all of this was moot because the vote came down to a tie, and Vice President Doyle made the tie-breaking vote for Laura Montez, because she promised him the job of Secretary of State. And to add insult to injury, moments after Montez was sworn in, she was given credit for freeing Tibet and was said to be in line for the Nobel peace price, which was the legacy that Selina had been working hard to claim for herself.

I’m really curious to see where this season will go now that Selina is no longer in office. What are she and her former staffers up to now? What kind of schemes is Selina plotting to try to establish her legacy? And does she have plans to try to re-run for president?

On tonight’s premiere, “Omaha,” Selina tries to secure her legacy one year after losing the presidency. Meanwhile, Dan tries to fit in at his new job; and Amy’s D.C.-style campaign tactics are a little too rough for her new coworkers.

Catch up with Selina tonight on HBO at 10:30/9:30c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Match Game, Into the Badlands, The Leftovers, and Guerrilla.

Tonight, Syfy’s fantasy series The Magicians returns for its second season. This series was a pleasant surprise for me last year. When I saw that the premise was about a bunch of people in magic school, I jumped to the incorrect conclusion that it was just going to be Harry Potter in college. However, the show has a very unique style and more of an adult tone, and halfway through the first season the series took a very creepy, dark turn that had me hooked.

When the series left off, the group had made their way from Brakebills College to the magical land of Fillory, a place they thought only existed in a series of novels. Eliot discovered that he was next in line to become High King of Fillory and agreed to get married, meaning he could never leave this land. Meanwhile, the others sought a magical blade that would help them defeat the Beast, who had been threatening the lives of those back at Brakebills. However, the confrontation with the Beast didn’t go as planned. Alice, who had swallowed the magical “elixir,” froze under pressure and the group was badly injured. Penny got the worst of it, losing both his hands. Meanwhile, Julia, who was still reeling over her revelation that she had been violated by a trickster, snatched the blade and appeared to make some kind of deal with the Beast, helping him to get away.

The second season picks up right where we left off as the gang must regroup, tend to their wounds, and figure out their next move. Can they forgive Julia’s betrayal? What deal did she make with the Beast? How will the group prepare to face the Beast again? I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere – it is a lot lighter and funnier than I would have expected, given the extremely dark direction the first season headed. The premiere has some really funny moments and sets up some interesting quests/journeys for each of the characters, kicking off what looks to be another thoroughly entertaining season.

I got a chance to speak with the cast about the new season at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. You can check out my videos at NoReruns.net.

On tonight’s premiere, “Knight of Crowns,” in the aftermath of their clash with the Beast, Quentin and his friends scramble for a new plan. Meanwhile, Julia and the Beast strike a dangerous deal.

Learn what deal Julia made tonight on Syfy at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Hunted, Arrow, Frequency, Workaholics, Jeff & Some Aliens, Man Seeking Woman, Incorporated, Suits, and The Young Pope.

chicagopd105smallLast week’s Chicago PD got a little bit more back to normal after the first episode dealt primarily with the fallout from Voight’s actions after his son’s death. And last week was very timely, given what’s going on in the country right now. When a young white couple was beaten up and the woman went missing in a primarily (all?) black neighborhood basically run by one of the city’s gangs, Intelligence and the rest of CPD had to work to make sure it wasn’t about race but simply about finding the missing woman. Of course, I had to feel for the woman when we figured out her fiancé had gone there to buy drugs and she was collateral damage. Thankfully, they were able to find her, but not before she was horrifically attacked by a guy who had been in prison before for rape. It was a very sad case.

The other big thing was Platt going up against Tay’s former boss, Commander Fogel. In the premiere, he ran into Tay at the hospital and learned she’d been moved to the 21st. So last week, he confronted Platt about going around him (to which she snarked she didn’t… She went above him. Hah!) to get Tay transferred. Then he basically threatened her and told her to move Tay back to his district immediately. When Tay asked her later if things were okay between her and Fogel, Platt said everything was fine…but it isn’t, and I have to wonder if that is part of what is up with tonight scary exciting episode…

On tonight’s episode, “All Cylinders Firing,” when Platt goes to her father Robert’s (guest star Chelcie Ross) house for dinner, she warns him to be careful with his new girlfriend Natalie (guest star Lilia Vassileva). Following dinner, Platt is physically assaulted as she’s getting into her car and is rushed to Chicago Med. Christian Stolte (Mouch from Chicago Fire, and Platt’s husband) also guest stars.

Find out if Platt is going to be okay tonight on NBC at 10/9c.

manvschildsmallIt’s a food-competition-show type of night for me. So my first pick is the season premiere of Man vs Child: Chef Showdown on FYI. I loved this show last season. A team of child cooking prodigies compete in different challenges against an executive-level chef in the kitchen. The kids, ages 8-15 (maybe 9-16 now?), are absolutely incredible. And the challenges are fun and different. So combined that with the fact that kids are competing against professional chefs, and this is a great show to chill out to.

On tonight’s episode, “Fish Out of Water,” the prodigies will have to sink or swim when they face off against Drew Tsang, an executive chef who takes them to task in three rounds that revolve around seafood.

See if the kids can defeat Chef Tsang tonight on FYI at 8/7c.

galavant13smallHuzzah and Tally Ho! Tonight, one of my favorite shows from last year finally returns! I am so glad Galavant got a second season because the first season ended on quite the cliffhanger! As the season came to a close, all of the prisoners had escaped from the castle, except for Sid. Madalena killed Richard’s brother and took the throne for herself, with Gareth by her side. Meanwhile, Isabella made her way to the home of her young cousin/future husband, where she was locked away in a tiny room. And Galavant and Richard were boarding a ship, trying to make their way back to their loves.

Will Galavant find Isabella before she marries her child groom? Will King Richard reclaim his throne? How will Madalena and Gareth run their new kingdom, and how will Sid fit in as their new squire? And how will Chef and Gwynne deal will their new freedom?

I thoroughly enjoy this show and have been anxiously awaiting new episodes! The characters are so much fun, and each episode is so creatively written, mixing in humorous situations and dialog, clever medieval parodies of modern-time pop culture and technology, and extremely witty and catchy original songs. I love having an hour of musical comedy to look forward to every week – and with at least 4 original songs each Sunday, there’s bound to be one that gets stuck in your head the next day!

The second season picks up immediately where the first left off. (If you missed the first season, you can still grab it for free on iTunes!) This series is perfect for binge-watching as it plays out like long story. However, each episode also has its own self-contained arcs. The second season will be aired across 5 weeks, 2 episodes each Sunday. I had access to screeners of the first 7 of this year’s 10 episodes, and I couldn’t help myself… I binged them all in a day! But even though I’ve already seen tonight’s premiere, I can’t wait to re-watch the episodes again tonight!

On tonight’s first episode, “A New Season aka Suck It Cancellation Bear,” Galavant and the crew are shipwrecked thanks to bad advice, and their overland trek back to Richard’s kingdom leads to a bar in West Hollow-wood. Then, in “World’s Best Kiss,” Galavant sees a fortune teller and is able to contact Isabella, who is planning her escape from Hortensia.

Sing along tonight on ABC starting at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Simpsons, Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life, Family Guy, Bordertown, & Worst Cooks in America.
