Tonight, FX’s 1980s Cold War spy drama, The Americans, returns for its penultimate season. As the fourth season came to a close, things got really intense. William had arranged a meeting to hand off the vial of the Lassa virus to Philip, but once he realized the Feds were tailing him, he smashed the vial, infecting himself and alerting Philip that he was walking into a trap. The Centre started to fear that William might turn on Philip & Elizabeth while being interrogated in the hospital, so Gabriel left it up to them if they wanted to go back to Russia. In his dying words, William revealed to Stan that there was an undercover spy couple with kids living the American dream. Meanwhile, Paige and Stan’s son Matthew were starting to get close, so Philip told Paige he wanted her to break it off, as it was too dangerous. And finally, in Russia, Philip’s illegitimate son, Mischa, had been released from his detention thanks to some powerful friends. Later, Mischa asked his grandfather for information about the father he never met and decided to search for him in America.

I was both happy and sad when it was announced last year that The Americans had been picked up for a final two seasons to close out the series (13 episodes this year and 10 episodes next year). While it’s sad to think of this excellent show coming to an end, I’m really happy that the writers can now safely work to a planned conclusion with an end date in mind. This series has a wonderful slow burn, with many tense moments and unexpected twists, and the acting is amazing. I’m looking forward to seeing what Stan does with his new information about the existence of a spy family – will he start to suspect his own neighbors? Will Mischa arrive in the US looking for Philip, and how will that affect the Jennings’ undercover work? And will Paige finally turn to the dark side and join the family business?

On tonight’s premiere, “Amber Waves,” the Centre sends a new operation unlike anything before to Philip and Elizabeth, which puts more strain on their already tense marriage and family life.

See how Philip and Elizabeth deal with the new operation tonight on FX at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Middle, American Housewife, Fresh Off the Boat, The Real O’Neals, This Is Us, Bones, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Imposters, Detroiters, Switched at Birth, Face Off, The Detour, Teachers, and Chrisley Knows Best.

Just when it looked like this season of time travel shows had come to an end, tonight two brand new time travel shows are premiering. ABC’s new crime drama Time After Time is an adaptation of the novel/1979 film of the same name. In the 19th century, author H.G. Wells (Freddie Stroma, UnREAL, Game of Thrones) has actually managed to build a working time machine to use as research for his upcoming novel. Unbeknownst to him, friend Dr. John Stevenson (Josh Bowman, Revenge) has been moonlighting as the psychopathic killer “Jack the Ripper.” As Scotland Yard tracks down the Ripper, John manages to escape in Well’s time machine to the year 2017, a chaotic new world where he feels more at home. Wells follows John but is disappointed to discover the future is not quite the utopia he dreamed it would be. Now, with the help of museum curator Jane Walker (Genesis Rodriguez, Entourage), Wells must navigate this strange new world as he hunts down the dangerous killer.

I recently checked out the 1979 film before watching tonight’s premiere, and the two are extremely similar. However, this series seems to add a bit more levity to the fish out of water story and also introduces a big twist and larger mystery that should provide a lot of interesting stories for the season. While the series starts out focused on The Time Machine, it will also take inspiration from other H.G. Wells stories as it progresses. I’m looking forward to seeing how this cat-and-mouse game through time plays out.

I had a chance to speak with some of the producers and stars at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con. You can find my press room videos at NoReruns.net.

On the first half of tonight’s 2-hour premiere, “Pilot,” a young H.G. Wells travels in the time machine he created to modern day New York City in the pursuit of the charismatic (yet secretly psychopathic) Dr. John Stevenson, better known as “Jack the Ripper.” Then, on “I Will Catch You,” H.G. Wells faces the real possibility that Vanessa Anders is his great granddaughter.

Check out this new drama tonight on ABC at 8/7c.

The new team on Sleepy Hollow is really growing on me, especially after last week’s episode. It was nice that we got to see a story line that included Jake and Alex more while also giving us a glance at the strong relationship between them. Jake risked himself to save Alex from the demon, and I was glad they both survived. Another relationship that had time to blossom last week was between Molly and Jenny. It is so nice to see Jenny helping Molly learn how to deal with her new life as a Witness.

On tonight’s episode, “Child’s Play,” when a monster appears that resembles Molly’s childhood imaginary friend, Diana realizes her daughter’s life as a Witness will be anything but normal. Meanwhile, Molly gets her chance to see the vault for the first time.

To see how Molly progresses, tune in to FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching Emerald City, Grimm, and When We Rise.

I’m so happy with the final two teams on My Kitchen Rules. From the beginning, Lance and Diane & Dice and Valerie have been my favorites. Neither team has bagged on the others, scored them low just to save themselves, or been anything but good competitors. Last week, the final three teams had to cook two dishes for the judges as well as a few of the LA Rams, their cheerleaders, and their fans. I was happy when Brandi and Dean were sent home after their dishes had the lowest combined scores (by quite a bit, actually). In the end, I’m torn about who I want to win. Lance and Diane have been fantastic the entire competition, but considering Val has had to do pretty much every bit of the work herself because Dice wasn’t actually much help in the kitchen, I almost feel like she deserves it more. Overall, I think I’ll be happy with whoever wins.

On tonight’s episode, “Champion is Crowned,” mother-son duo Lance and Diane face off against Andrew Dice Clay and wife Valerie. The final showdown puts both teams to the test with their biggest challenge yet, as they are asked to prepare a four-course meal for a panel of six world-renowned chefs, along with all of their former contestants. Lance and Diane take an early lead, while Dice and Valerie turn up the heat as the night goes on. In the end, the teams are neck and neck, but only one team will walk away as the first winners.

Find out who wins tonight on FOX at 9:01/8:01c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing MasterChef: Junior, Chicago Med, Top Chef, Beat Bobby Flay, & Impractical Jokers.

Last week’s Hawaii Five-0 was a crazy emotional one. Dr. Madison Gray walked into HPD, her hands stained with blood, proclaiming she needed help. She swore her name was…well, something other than Madison Gray, that she was a tourist visiting from Wisconsin. Of course, no one (but the shrink who spent a few minutes with her and then said he thought she had multiple personalities) believed her, but things got tense when the blood tentatively came back as former FBI profiler Alicia Brown’s. Thankfully, she was alive when the team went to her house, and she confronted Gray, who finally let her persona slip only for Alicia to see. So Alicia went back to talk to her at four in the morning and nearly sliced her throat, but Gray convinced her she knew something Alicia would want to know and if she broke her out of there, she’d tell her. I assumed it was the name/location of her daughter’s killer. That’s what Steve and the team thought too, when they went to visit the prisoner who Alicia believed orchestrated her daughter’s murder – but he wouldn’t give them any information, choosing to kill himself instead. Gray drove Alicia out to a house in the middle of nowhere, and in it…she found her daughter, alive! The kidnapper nearly got to them, but they fended him off until Steve and the team arrived and killed him. Of course, by then, Gray had left…only to turn up inside Alicia’s house a few nights later with a gun. She gave it to Alicia and said things weren’t over, that she was going to make Alicia a killer, and that her daughter would only be safe if she pulled the trigger. Alicia told 911 she wanted to report a murder. The screen went black, and then we heard a gunshot.

So did Alicia really kill her? Honestly, I don’t know. I would like to think not, because Alicia just got her daughter back and a chance to really move on. But I don’t have a clue. Hopefully we’ll find out for sure tonight! (Unlike when Grover beat the crap out of his former partner in his former hometown and called the police to turn himself and the other guy in, and we never heard anything after that about any repercussions!)

On tonight’s episode, “E malama pono (Handle with Care),” McGarrett and Danny finally track down the missing uranium, which has been used to build a bomb located in the middle of the jungle. Now, they must carefully extract the unstable explosive through treacherous terrain before it detonates. Singer Darius Rucker guest stars as Desmond Abati, the bomb maker. Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith guest composed multiple cues for this episode.

See if the team can extract the bomb safely tonight on CBS at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Grimm, Last Man Standing, MacGyver, & Rosewood.
