Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, FOX kicks off the new series, The Passage, which is based on the trilogy of novels by Justin Cronin. Project NOAH is a top-secret government medical organization formed through the cooperation of the CDC and DOD. Its goal is to create a vaccine that would prevent and cure all deadly diseases. While exploring a remote cave, Dr. Jonas Lear (Henry Ian Cusick, Lost) makes a startling discovery, a vampire-like creature that has been alive for over 250 years. Unfortunately, his best friend, scientist Tim Fanning (Jamie McShane, Bosch, Bloodline, Sons of Anarchy) is attacked, becomes patient zero of a new deadly virus and the target of Dr. Lear’s research.

Heading up Project NOAH is Major Nichole Sykes (Caroline Chikezie, The Shannara Chronicles), who authorizes the use of prisoners as test subjects for the vaccine research. The project’s latest acquisitions include death-row inmates Shauna Babcock (Brianne Howey, The Exorcist) and Anthony Carter (McKinley Belcher III, Ozark, Mercy Street). With each new subject, they make some progress with the vaccine but also yield new and interesting side effects. They decide that a much younger test subject will be needed in order to stave off these side effects and start looking for a child that no one would miss.

Clark Richards (Vincent Piazza, Boardwalk Empire, Rescue Me), head of security of the project, had been tasking his former Special Ops trainer, Federal Agent Brad Wolgast (Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Pitch), with obtaining the test subjects. Wolgast doesn’t know what’s going on at the secret facility but does know it can’t be good for the people he brings there. So once he meets 10-year-old target Amy Bellafonte (Saniyya Sidney, Fences, Hidden Figures), he has a change of heart. She reminds him of the child he and ex-wife, Dr. Lila Kyle (Emmanuelle Chriqui, Entourage, Murder in the First) had lost. So he makes it his mission to protect her by any means necessary. Meanwhile, inside the walls of the Project NOAH facility, lies a deadly new race of beings with increasingly mysterious, untold powers.

Tonight’s premiere does a lot of setup work, establishing the characters and the premise. I’m not familiar with the source material, but it looks like the series will be a nice blend of sci-fi thriller mixed with character drama – kind of like Touch meets The Strain. The pilot just gives a glimpse at what these vampire-like beings are capable of, and it seems like only a matter of time before they get loose and start to wreak havoc. Meanwhile, we also get a look into the emotional backstories of many of the main characters, learning their motivations for what they are doing. I’m looking forward to seeing more of the series.

On tonight’s premiere, “Pilot,” as an imminent flu epidemic threatens the U.S., federal agent Brad Wolgast is tasked with bringing in a 10-year-old girl to be used as a test subject at a secret medical facility; after meeting her, Brad’s loyalties are tested.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/9/19

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, ABC kicks off the new comedy Schooled, which is a 1990-something set spinoff of The Goldbergs. Barry Goldberg’s former girlfriend Lainey Lewis (AJ Michalka) hasn’t had much success in launching her music career, so she heads back home and applies for a job as the music teacher at her old high school, William Penn Academy. Lainey thinks that she’ll be able to relate to the students since they aren’t that much younger than herself. In a way that’s true, but she also realizes that she’ll need to quickly step up and take charge if she wants the students to see her as an authority figure. Helping Lainey navigate these new waters are the school’s new principal/former guidance counselor, Mr. Glascott (Tim Meadows) and the familiar Coach Mellor (Bryan Callen). This new peer relationship with her former teachers and calling them by their first names is going to take some getting used to!

A while back, ABC had done a backdoor pilot for this spinoff that wasn’t picked up. They did air the episode last year (and it wasn’t very good). This is a completely re-worked version of the series that is better but is still missing those fun family relationships and sibling rivalry that The Goldbergs offers. This series is not a replacement for the original but has the potential to be a fun 90s counterpart. It follows a lot of the same structure, with Lainey doing narration, photos/clips/interviews with the show’s real-life counterparts during the credits, and lots of great 90s music and fun pop-culture references. It’s hard to tell after just one episode what the focus of the series will be – i.e. does it plan to follow the same students from season to season, will there be other regular teachers in the cast, will we see more Goldbergs cameos after the premiere, etc? But I’m definitely interested in seeing where it goes.

On tonight’s premiere, “Be Like Mike,” Lainey returns to William Penn Academy, where she has a hard time adjusting to being an authority figure; Coach Mellor struggles with Michael Jordan’s influence on modern-day basketball.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/6/19

Jenny’s Choice

There were a lot of good moments in the final 2018 episode of NCIS: LA. NCIS Special Agent Nicole DeChamps (Marsha Thomason) was back, filling in for Callen, who spent all episode with Anna in the hospital. The case itself was okay, some parts of it better than others – I really enjoyed Sam sort of bonding with the guys from the Army and Marines who were originally thought to be the bad guys but who’d been drugged so they weren’t exactly in charge of their actions when they ran their vehicle through a Christmas tree lot and shot up the place. I also really enjoyed Nicole and Sam at the rich drug dealer’s party.

Outside the case, there were some great moments. Rogers being a Grinch, even banning the company party and decorations. Callen spending Christmas with Anna, who was in the hospital after being beaten up very badly in prison…and Arkady maybe finally realizing that Callen does truly care about her. Deeks freaking out about hosting the company holiday party at the bar – he was so funny about the food, going so far as to getting a bunch of cakes or bread or whatever from the girlfriend of one of the “suspects” of the case. The team toasting to the people they lost in the previous year, remembering Granger and Hidoko, even mentioning Hetty, who is off on some mysterious project (in reality, Linda Hunt was in an accident over the summer and is apparently still not better enough to get back to work…).

I still want Kensi & Deeks to pick a wedding date and name the bar! (Hello! I have two: Fern’s or The Golden Shark! Duh!)

On tonight’s episode, “The Sound of Silence,” after the chief of logistics for a naval weapons station collapses on the job, the NCIS team must determine if this is a terror threat or a stress-induced breakdown. Also, Kensi and Deeks research different honeymoon locations.

To see if there’s a terror threat and find out where we’re (I mean they’re) going on the honeymoon, tune in to CBS at 9/8c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/3/19

Phoebe’s Choice

So if you’re anything like me, you go nuts every comic book TV show that they make…and you watch these shows even when they’ve become gratingly awful, which brings us to tonight’s big return, my beloved #SloMoSharkJump: Gotham! This show actually peeled itself back from the ledge of corny and finished strong, making this final season that much more exciting. Last year we saw Selina Kyle, the Catgirl, going into the ER after a shot to her vertebrae by Jeremiah, the Joker. GCPD was busy collecting his bombs, but he promised there was one they didn’t know about. He would only reveal where when Bruce Wayne came to face him. Meanwhile, a small consortium of Gotham’s biggest villains watched Dr. Hugo Strange resurrect the undead Solomon Grundy.

A general showed up to take over as the city was being evacuated and martial law was being put in place. He arrested Gordon for insubordination and ordered him taken out of the city, but Riddler kidnapped him during transit. Ed wanted Jim dead so Lee could finally leave that part of her life behind. He was crushing Jim under a huge industrial-sized press when Lee came in. She convinced Riddler that she was over Jim and ready to leave the city with Ed Nygma that night. Gordon, spared of his crushing death, returned to the police station. Ra’s al Ghul confronted Barbara and invited her to leave the city with him.

She declined. Bruce confronted the Joker, who revealed there were no extra bombs but that he needed to lure Bruce to where al Ghul could kidnap him. He absconded with both young Master Wayne and all the original bombs.

Alfred, Tabitha, Barbara, & the Penguin all went after Ra’s as Gordon realized the bridges were the target for the bombs. He ordered the bridges be cleared. The General again tried to arrest him, but GCPD all turned their guns on him. Knowing that only Bruce’s hand could slay Ra’s al Ghul, Barbara put the blade in Wayne’s hand and guided it into al Ghul’s chest. This happened as all the bridges got destroyed, leaving Gotham an isolated powerless island. As Ra’s disintegrated into ashes, he urged Bruce to “become the Dark Knight.” When it came time to leave the city, Lee decided to stay, so she and Riddler wound up stabbing each other. They kissed before collapsing to die – Hugo Strange found them though, so they were destined to be resurrected. Grundy was returned to life as Butch, but only long enough for Penguin to kill him in front of Tabitha. He wanted revenge for when she killed his mother. Bruce was offered a chance to get out of the city, but he stayed to fight the gangs that were already taking over.

Along with Gordon, Luscious Fox, and a few other cops, there was almost no one left to fight the rise of these pillaging gangs. Which brings us to tonight!!! I can’t wait to see how Bruce and Jim do against this dystopian version of Gotham. So much ass shall be kicked.

On tonight’s episode, “Year Zero,” Jim Gordon and Bruce Wayne face the chaos Gotham City has become. Their mission to keep the city safe becomes more complicated as the villains who survived the attack on the city begin to resurface and claim various territories. Meanwhile, Selina Kyle grapples with how to deal with her uncertain future.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/2/19

Kyle’s Choice

With the new year approaching, the Winter TV season is finally upon us, and there are lots of new and returning shows about to premiere. Tonight FOX launches the fun new mystery singing competition series, The Masked Singer.

I had stopped watched these singing competition series a while back, but The Masked Singer provides a fun new twist on the genre. If you saw the YouTube clip of Ryan Reynolds dressed as a unicorn signing on a Korean TV show last year, this is the same show but for US audiences. The series finds 12 celebrities hiding their identities under full-body costumes as they take the stage to sing incognito before a live audience. All told, the 12 celebrity competitors have amassed 65 Grammy nominations, 16 multi-Platinum albums, 16 Emmy nominations, nine Broadway shows, four stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and four Super Bowl titles! Each week some of the contestants will participate in head-to-head sing-offs. The studio audience and judges will vote, and at the end of the night, one of the singers will be eliminated and reveal his or her identity. Hosting the series is Nick Cannon, and the judging panel includes Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong, and Nicole Scherzinger.

I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere. As each masked singer is introduced, they give some clues to help you try to identify them. The judges also ask each contestant a question or two and make their own guesses. When the contestants are interviewed, their voices are distorted, but it’s fun to try to figure out who these singers are based on the clues, their mannerisms, their singing voices, etc. It’s obvious that some of these folks have a lot of experience singing/performing, while others not-so-much. My screeners for the first two episodes were blurred and bleeped during the big reveals, so I am really excited to check out tonight’s episode to learn the identity of one of these celebrities! In tonight’s episode, we meet half of the contestants, and next week we meet the second half.

On tonight’s premiere, “Mask On Face Off,” the first six undercover celebrity singers – peacock, hippo, monster, unicorn, deer and lion – face off against one another in elaborate head-to-toe costumes.
