This year’s version of Archer, Archer: Danger Island, has been an exciting whirlwind that is now sadly almost done. Tonight is the finale, and we have still not seen a hint of what might be going on in the “irl” world that the characters started in. Archer has been in a coma, and we’re in the second ring of Hell in his subconsciousness presumably. Last week’s penultimate episode started with Fuchs, née Cyril Figgis, leader of a Nazi troop seeking the magic idol the natives presumably have, discovering one of their men had been taken by the cannibals. They decided to call in a platoon of Stormtroopers as reinforcements.

Pam and Archer overheard that planning, so they retreated to the village and started to get them ready to fight the Nazis. After a bit of the training, Mallory showed up with Ray, Manu, Cheryl, & Crackers the Parrot. The natives thought that Cheryl was their Goddess “Kalua.” The Nazi Stormtroopers arrived with a powder that was a mix of painkillers/meth & cocaine. They all got zonked out of their f’n minds. Meanwhile, so did Pam, who was licking a frog while she trained with the cannibals. The drugs secreted from the frog enabled her to craft a crossbow from scratch.

Mallory drank a “Phlegm Sangria” as bullets zipped by when the Nazis actually attacked. She was rubbing it in Archer’s face the she was going to go find the Idol while he was distracted fighting Nazis, when her drink was shot by one on the hundreds of bullets zinging past her. She then took the gun from Archer and annihilated the German mortar battalion in about 4 seconds. After that, Archer’s crazy tactical “Battle of Endor” styled tactical approach turned out to work perfectly. Until Fuchs showed up in a Mecha suit equipped with automatic guns. Just then the old villager lady with no teeth dropped the last trap – a Return of the Jedi styled log with spikes on it that smashed Mecha-Fuchs deep into the left field of the jungle island a half mile away.

As things closed out, we saw that Fuchs was still alive and that Cheryl had finally made peace with the fact that oysters were testicles on the menu of cannibals & she dug in.

I read an interview with Adam Reed recently, and it sounds like Season 10 next year might not be the end of Archer. There is yet hope. No matter how long the show may endure, this season has been an instant classic that I think a lot of people are missing.

On tonight’s episode, “A Discovery,” Archer and the gang enter a deadly temple in search of an even deadlier treasure.
See how the season ends tonight on FXX at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching that righteous c*nt whom I adore on Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and the ever impressive Syfy adaptation The Expanse.

The other night, I binge-watched 8 episodes of SEAL Team. For some reason, it built up on our DVR and I finally sat down to watch…and I couldn’t stop. I love this show. Last episode started exactly where the previous episode left off: with Jason and half the team going down in flames after their helicopter was hit with a SAM (surface-to-air missile). Thankfully all of the team themselves survived, although they lost the pilots – and, we came to learn late in the episode after a hurt Jason went searching for him on his own, their HVT, Nouri Halani, who lived for a while but then died from his injuries. Jason suffered a leg injury, which he took multiple shots of morphine for in order to go after Halani, and a bad concussion, which caused him to hallucinate several major conversations with one of the dead pilots – at one point, I thought he was seeing the guy as a younger version of himself, with his dad’s name, wife’s name, etc. In the end, the rest of the team was able to make it back to them, help stave off all the enemies who made their way to kill them, and take out the bunker that held the SAM, thereby letting the rescue helicopters finally make their way to the team. And I gotta say, it was awesome seeing Clay step up and take control before the rest of the team got back. He did a fantastic job!

Tonight is the season finale. Lots of story lines to watch out for… Jason is determined to find proof that Cutter is in bed with the Afghanis and behind the death of Echo Team. I can’t imagine much time has elapsed between the helicopter crash and tonight’s ep, so he won’t be over the concussion, which will make it hard for him to do what he feels like he needs to do. Then there’s the huge amount of chemistry we’ve seen lately between Clay and Davis, who are both feeling the pressures of deployment on their relationships with Stella and Danny. I love Clay and Stella, but even I can’t deny the connection he and Davis have had lately.

On tonight’s episode, “The Cost of Doing Business,” after Jason lies about the severity of his concussion to get cleared for combat, he and the SEAL Team plan a final mission to avenge Echo Team’s deaths once and for all before they return home from deployment.

See if Jason and his team can find out for sure who was behind Echo Team’s death and if they all make it home from deployment tonight on CBS at 9:01/8:01c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing The Goldbergs, Modern Family, American Housewife, & SciJinks.

Each season, the FXX series Archer re-invents itself. Last year, the series became a noir detective mystery, with the characters taking on different roles in the dreamworld inside Archer’s head. This season is called Archer: Danger Island, and once again the characters aren’t quite themselves. The season is set in 1939, on the island of Mitimotu in the South Pacific, where Archer’s mother owns a hotel. Malory pays off local French police Capitaine Reynaud to look the other way when it comes to the illegal businesses she runs out of the hotel. Staying at the hotel is heiress Charlotte Vandertunt, whose life has started to fall apart after she cheated on her husband with Archer, during her honeymoon.

Archer is a one-eyed, eye patch wearing pilot for Sterling Airlines, a small business that flies folks around the island. His co-pilot is Pam, who can also serve double duty as a tough jungle guide. Princess Lanaluakalani charters a flight, but Archer suspects she might be hiding some sort of secret agenda. She is joined by a foreign “businessman,” Siegbert Fuchs, who is obviously some sort of German spy. Oh, and there’s also a talking macaw named Crackers.

I’ve checked out the first two episodes of this new season, and I still find this show to be so much fun. It’s wonderful how the writers find new ways to make each new season feel like a fresh, new, self-contained story. While the characters are different, they still have a lot of the same personality traits we’ve come to love. Archer still drinks a lot, loves female companionship, hates his mother, and makes lots of sarcastic remarks. It looks like Danger Island is going to be another great season, with lots of crazy pitfalls, dangers, and precarious situations to befall the characters.

On tonight’s season premiere, “Strange Pilot,” Archer inserts himself into a domestic dispute; engine troubles threaten to ruin Archer’s business.

Visit Mitimotu with Archer and the gang tonight on FXX at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Handmaid’s Tale, Alex, Inc., Designated Survivor, Survivor, The Blacklist, The Americans, The Expanse, and Krypton.

Last year’s finale of You’re the Worst saw Jimmy do the most unlikely thing we’d ever expect from this series: he proposed to Gretchen. Even more shocking? She said yes. Then to get us right back to normal, the prospect of a new family terrorized Jimmy and he fleed the scene. To kick it all off for the new season, we got two episodes back-to-back last week.

Season four opened up a few months after that fateful night with Jimmy living somewhere past Barstow, California, in a trailer park retirement village. It was there that he had grown a beard and palled up with an older man named Burt who loved fast cars and old TV shows. Burt was a curmudgeon of sorts who hated everyone else in the community. He and Jimmy spent the days watching The Fall Guy and talking about what losers all the other retirees were.

One day a neighbor mentioned to Jimmy that she was the one who stole the keys to Burt’s prized muscle car because he just couldn’t see well enough to drive anymore. Instead of holding that in confidence, he told Burt at once and they broke into her house to get them once she went out. Jimmy soon learned that Burt in fact was a horrible driver indeed. After confronting him about it and getting punched, he decided to drive back to L.A. Burt came to terms with the fact he must be a bit kinder to the other retirees if he wanted any friends at all.

Episodes two started in the City of Angels, where Gretchen was now living at Lindsay’s apartment and smoking crack and singing 90s tunes at a frightening pace regularly. It seemed she no longer worked as a publicist and had slumped into relative solitude. Lindsay, recently divorced, was now working with a fashion designer, which was perfect for her. Gretchen, who suffered from severe depression, confessed to Lindsay that she hadn’t left the house in 3 months because she was afraid she’d run into Jimmy, who rejected her. Lindsay went to see Jimmy to find that Edgar had completely redecorated the house and he insisted Jimmy was gone for good.

Lindsay went back to tell Gretchen that Jimmy vanished on the same night the proposal fell through, that he probably “drove back to England.” This gave Gretch some courage but came back to bite Lindsay in the ass when Gretchen came to the fashion design space, cracked out, during a photo shoot. Outside Gretchen cried to her best friend how she didn’t know if she and Jimmy were broken up, since technically they were engaged still. That frantic conversation ended with crunk AF Gretchen chasing Lindsay down an alley singing Bare Naked Ladies “It’s Been” at 90 mph.

To escape the pressures of work and Gretchen, Lindsay went to see Edgar. They realized the two of them had become the serious ones, whereas their besties had become the ones running from their problems. They mocked Jimmy & Gretchen playing around the house, saying things the other two would say. It ended with them in Jimmy/Gretchen’s bed, where finallllyyy (after me rooting for it for 3 seasons!!) they had sex. In the very last scene, we saw Gretchen having sex with some guy, probably on crack, when she saw a text come through on her phone from Jimmy: “Hey…”

On tonight’s episode, “Odysseus,” after Jimmy returns to Los Angeles, he attempts to make amends with Gretchen, leading to their first confrontation. Lindsay and Edgar enjoy their new friends-with-benefits arrangement while Edgar tries to show Jimmy that Gretchen wasn’t the only person he abandoned.

To see how the Jimmy/Gretchen reunion goes, tune in to FXX at 10/9c.

Tonight, I’ll also be watching the season premiere of South Park & Full Frontal with Samantha Bee.

Recap/Review – Archer Season Premiere

It’s that time of year again, folks. For the better part of a decade, sometime by spring, the crew over at FX churns out another season of Archer for the rabid fans. The kind of people who shout out “Holy Shit Snacks!” when surprised or who can’t help saying “phrasing” then giggling when someone mentions how “hard” a task is. This year, in the eighth season, the show finds itself shifted over to FXX for a change. Other than that, the other major shakeup is that this time around, 99% of the show takes place in a coma – in Archer’s three-months-to-date ongoing coma that we found him in at the start of last week’s season premiere.

In the waking world, Lana & Mallory, the two most important women in Archer’s life had a brief chat after Woodhouse’s funeral, reflecting on Archer’s fate and bringing us up to date on the situation via rather snappy exposition. Mallory wondered what dreams he must be having, and presto blammo, we sank into Archer: Dreamland, as the newest season is branded. Woodhouse’s death was something we knew had to happen, as the legendary George Coe who provided his voice passed away in 2015. They worked around that issue last year by simply having him be missing the whole time, but this year we finally got closure. And we learned what happened after Archer got shot and left to drown in a pool at the end of season seven.
