Kyle’s Choice #1

Tonight, after being off the air for over 11 years, Will & Grace returns to NBC to kick off the show’s ninth season. I was a big fan of the series when it originally aired and thought they actually did a great job of wrapping the series up in the finale. However, within the opening moments of tonight’s season premiere, the characters have a fun time quickly and concisely letting viewers know which things from the series finale are no longer canon. After that, the show doesn’t feel like it has missed a beat in the decade it was off the air. Will (Erick McCormack) and Grace (Debra Messing) are still lonely roommates, Jack (Sean Hayes) still makes his fun entrances and inappropriate comments, and Karen (Megan Mullally) is still drunk, wealthy, and “working” as Grace’s assistant.

I checked out the first three episodes of the season, and the writers have done an excellent job at making this reboot feel not only the same as the original show but have also brought it into the modern day, tackling many issues prevalent in today’s political climate. The cast hasn’t lost any of their chemistry, and the jokes and double-entendres flow rapidly. Fans of the original series will certainly be pleased to welcome this show back into their lives!

On tonight’s premiere, “11 Years Later,” Will and Grace both falter when their political beliefs are put to the test; and Jack and Karen help them hide their secret shame from each other, but the truth finally comes out.

Welcome the show back tonight on NBC at 9/8c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/25/17

Jenny’s Choice

I’m a big fan of Briga Heelan, who starred in Ground Floor & was in a handful of episodes of Undateable & Cougar Town. So when I learned about her latest comedy, Great News, I knew I’d have to check it out. It doesn’t hurt that it also stars “Young Ducky” from NCIS, Adam Campbell, who has a delicious English accent and is really cute. Briga Heelan stars as Katie Wendelson, a smart, ambitious news producer at “The Breakdown,” a national cable news show. But one day, her mom, Carol (played by the hilarious Andrea Martin), decides to go back to work after being a stay-at-home mom for 30 years, and she gets an internship at “The Breakdown,” much to Katie’s dismay. Starring alongside them is John Michael Higgins, also hilarious, as the news desk veteran, Chuck Pierce, who isn’t easy to please and thinks awfully highly of himself. Rounding out the cast are Horatio Sanz, who plays Justin, Katie’s closest friend at the office and the laidback video editor, as well as Nicole Richie, who plays Portia, the young, very hip co-host opposite Chuck Pierce, and Tracey Wigfield, who plays creepy meteorologist Beth.

I’ve seen the first few episodes and really enjoyed them all. The cast is great – really funny and there’s some good chemistry between them. Andrea Martin, who is probably best known for her role in the My Big Fat Greek Wedding movies, is absolutely hysterical as the over-the-top smother (smothering mother). The relationship (not romantic!) that develops between her character, Carol, and Chuck Pierce is fantastic. Overall, it’s a highly enjoyable comedy and more than well worth your watch.

On tonight’s first episode, “Pilot,” Katie, a frustrated cable news producer, is horrified when her mom, Carol, gets an internship at “The Breakdown.” Despite Katie’s best efforts, Carol is instantly beloved by the entire office, including blowhard veteran anchor Chuck. But when Katie hits a roadblock while producing a big story, she realizes that maybe having a mom at work isn’t such a bad thing. Then on “Bear Attack,” Katie tries to set workplace boundaries with Carol, but when a big story about an escaped bear lands in her lap, her mom can’t help but meddle. Meanwhile, Greg tries to get Chuck and Portia to do a little friendly banter at the end of the show.

Meet Katie, her mom, and the rest of the news crew tonight in back-to-back episodes on NBC starting at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Chopped Junior, Prison Break, Imaginary Mary, Chicago Fire, & Chopped.
