Last week, ABC kicked off the new series The Baker and the Beauty, the US version of an Israeli romantic comedy series (the orthogonal version is available on Amazon Prime). Daniel Garcia (Victor Rasuk, Jack Ryan, How to Make It in America) works in his family’s Miami bakery and has been dating girlfriend Vanessa (Michelle Veintimilla, Gotham) for year, but he’s not sure he wants to move to the next level. So when she surprises him by proposing in a crowded restaurant, Daniel’s response is “No.” Vanessa storms out of the restaurant, but not before pouring Daniel’s soup all over him. One of those looking on at this embarrassing situation is international superstar Noa Hamilton (Nathalie Kelley, Dynasty, The Vampire Diaries), who just went through her own very public break-up. Noa invites Daniel to join her and her entourage for a night on the town, and the two really hit it off. While Daniel and Noa may have some sparks, they come from two very different worlds and cultures. Daniel isn’t used to being part of the spotlight and comes from a close working-class family, while Noa is used to the paparazzi and a rich, lavish lifestyle.

Daniel’s brother Mateo (David Del Rio, Grease Live!) is in disbelief when he learns who Daniel is with, and his younger sister Natalie (Belissa Escobedo) is overjoyed, as she is Noa Hamilton’s number-one fan, viewing her as a role model. Daniel’s parents, Mari (Lisa Vidal, Being Mary Jane) and Rafael (Carlos Gómez, Madam Secretary, The Glades), are also surprised but happy to find out about the proposal and subsequent rejection, as they never really liked Vanessa. Vanessa, on the other hand, realized that she may have overreacted and was on her way to apologize for her ambush proposal when she sees the paparazzi photos of Daniel and Noa together.

I enjoyed last week’s premiere way more than I expected to. It has lots of humor but also quite a bit of heart. The connection between Daniel and Noa feels genuine, and the Garcias also feel like they could be a real family. I really appreciated how they love and support each other, while also having a bit of fun ribbing on one another. I’m looking forward to seeing how this “two people from two different worlds” relationship plays out as both Noa and Daniel try to figure out how to proceed with their relationship and navigate each other’s lives. And I also want to see how Vanessa reacts to all this and if she’s going to try to win Daniel back.

On tonight’s episode, “Ruin My Life,” Noa and Daniel’s relationship begins to flourish; after an unwanted birthday party for Noa, Daniel discovers more about her past; a food critic puts in an outrageous food order the Garcias cannot refuse to take.

Traverse the relationship between Noa and Daniel with them tonight on ABC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording 9-1-1, Prodigal Son, Better Call Saul, Breeders, and Almost Paradise.

After being off the air for eight years, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is back – for only ten episodes for now, but who knows, if ratings are good. But rather than Ty Pennington being back as the front man, this time it’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) as host, and instead of ABC, it’s moved to HGTV. He’ll be joined by special guests, including Anthony Anderson, Derek Hough, Ty Pennington (yes, he’ll be back!), LeAnn Rimes, Laila Ali, Tyler Florence, and HGTV stars David Bromstad, Tamara Day, Tarek El Moussa, and Jasmine Roth. In each episode, a deserving family gets the renovation help they need to change their lives. Working alongside Jesse, neighbors, local building experts, and celebrity guests, the show’s regularly appearing designers – Breegan Jane, Carrie Locklyn, and Darren Keefe – create customized homes that perfectly accommodate the needs of each inspiring family.

I’m so excited. I loved this show when it was on before, and I love Jesse Tyler Ferguson. I’m thrilled that Ty will be back as a special guest, though, because there’s really no one like him!

On tonight’s episode, “All in the Mosley Family,” after welcoming three teenagers into her home, a single mother moves her family of six into her mother’s place; Jesse and the design team give the family a fresh start with a new house they can all call home.

To see the family’s new home, tune in to HGTV at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching NCIS: LA, NCIS: New Orleans, & Beat Bobby Flay.

“Here’s a story…of a lovely lady…” Anyone who grew up in the early 70s probably watched (or at least knew about) The Brady Bunch, and for those of us born in the mid to late 70s, we got to watch the reruns, which were still airing all the time. I lived out in the country and didn’t have cable, but I got to watch it. I can still sing the theme song with all the right lyrics. So when I saw that HGTV was coming out with A Very Brady Renovation, featuring all six of the Brady “kids” along with a slew of HGTV renovation stars (like twins Drew & Jonathan from Property Brothers), I couldn’t wait. And it’s finally here. In addition to the Scott brothers, Barry Williams (Greg), Maureen McCormick (Marcia), Christopher Knight (Peter), Eve Plumb (Jan), Mike Lookinland (Bobby), and Susan Olsen (Cindy) are joined by Mina Starsiak Hawk and Karen E Laine from Good Bones, siblings Leanne and Steve Ford from Restored by the Fords, Jasmine Roth from Hidden Potential, and Lara Spencer from Flea Market Flip to demo, reno, and replicate the Brady Bunch house!

There were over 9,000 hours of work filmed, all of which has been edited and condensed down to a single short season, starting with tonight’s 90-minute extended premiere. One cool thing is we’ll see/meet Florence Henderson’s (mom Carol, who passed away in 2016) son and daughter, as well as the children of the show’s creator and the granddaughter of the actual owner of the house itself, all of whom will show up for the reveal.

On tonight’s 90-minute premiere, “Honey, We’re Home!” the Brady Bunch kids have an emotional reunion at the famous Studio City, CA, home before beginning demolition.

Don’t miss it tonight on HGTV at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching So You Think You Can Dance, Kids Baking Championship, & Whose Line Is It Anyway.

ellensdesignchallengesmallIt’s no surprise that I love design shows. I also love Ellen DeGeneres. So what happens when you combine those two things? Ellen’s Design Challenge, that’s what. In a six-episode series, six competitors will tackle challenges to sketch, design, and build interesting, fun, and functional furniture. A contest will go home each week, until the last competitor standing receives $100,000 and their work is featured in HGTV Magazine.

Ellen is really, really funny, so I hope she brings her sense of humor and fun to the show. I can’t wait to see the designs the contestants come up with.

On tonight’s episode, “Episode 1,” six furniture builders garnered from all over the U.S. gather at a workshop and meet their carpenters for the first time, along with a mystery gift that they must transform into a piece of furniture, and it does not take long for temperatures to rise.

See what the mystery gift is tonight on HGTV at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Tiny House Nation, Best. Ever., & Eye Candy.
