Tonight, AMC’s sci-fi drama, Humans, returns for a second season. The series is set in the near future, where human-like robots known as synths have become a regular part of society, almost like a standard household appliance. In the first season, some of these synths had become sentient and now had the ability to think and feel like humans. Leo Elster, the son of the original creator of the synths – and part synth himself – had been tracking down these conscious synths to protect them from those eager to tear them apart to discover what makes them tick. The Hawkins family, who had purchased one of these synths to help out with housework, found themselves swept up in the middle of the action and drama. By the end of the season, Leo’s group of sentient synths interfaced with one another in order to share their individual pieces of the sentient code. Leo saved the completed code to a hard drive and considered publishing it so that all synths round the world would have the choice to become conscious, but he ultimately decided to hold off. However, synth Niska secretly made her own backup of the code before heading off to some unknown destination to live on her own.

What does Niska plan to do with this code? Will she unleash it to awaken every synth around the globe? Will Leo ever find a safe haven for Mia and the others? And who is still hunting them down to discover this “flaw” in the code? Will Laura ever forgive her husband Joe for sleeping with their synth, Mia, and how will the Hawkins family fit into the larger story of the second season?

This series was in my top ten for 2015, and I’m really happy to finally see it back for a second season! Not only does it provide an interesting story, some tense moments, and some great drama, but there is also this very interesting layer to the show that explores what actually makes someone human. The acting is superb – the people playing the synths are amazing at making these characters look so lifeless and robotic as needed!

On tonight’s premiere, “Episode 1,” Niska faces a critical decision, while Mia, Leo, and Max remain in hiding. Meanwhile, the Hawkins struggle to move on; and Dr. Athena Morrow gets a surprise visitor.

See the season premiere tonight on AMC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Quantico, Man With a Plan, Superior Donuts, The Celebrity Apprentice, Timeless, 24: Legacy, APB, Supergirl, Jane the Virgin, and Beyond.

humans816smallTonight, the first season of AMC’s sentient robot drama Humans comes to a close. Last week, Karen confronted Niska, telling her they were a mistake and needed to be destroyed, but in the scuffle that followed, she accidentally shot and killed George. Elsewhere, Leo and Fred tracked down Max’s body, but it was in bad shape. Meanwhile, Joe returned home, agreeing to sleep on the couch, and was soon joined by the first of many houseguests, Niska. Shortly afterward, Leo and Fred arrived, and everyone got to work trying to save Max’s “life.” They managed to get him stable but had to wait 13 hours for Max to fully charge to see the extent of his damages. The synths spent this time bonding with various members of the Hawkins family.

When Max finally did wake up, he didn’t look good, and Leo realized that he was dying. Leo wanted to unlock the secret formula for creating sentient synths and try use that to save Max, but the others weren’t so sure. Meanwhile, Karen showed up, and Leo became an emotional wreck seeing this woman who looked exactly like his mother. She told Niska that she had a change of heart and that she had a safe place where they could all be together. However, just then a heavily armed strike force, led by Hobb, busted down the door.

What does Hobb want with the synths? Will he destroy them like he’s been told to, or does he have more sinister plans? Will the Hawkins family be able to rescue their new friends before it’s too late? Will these sentient synths use their secret to increase their numbers? And if so, how will the public react to this? Also, what’s up with that odd hand twitching thing Fred’s got going on?

I have really enjoyed this first season. While it’s been a slow burn, it’s set up some really interesting drama and thought-provoking storylines. I’m looking forward to seeing where the story will end tonight and what will be set up for the show’s second season.

On tonight’s episode, the synths are captured by Hobb, and only the Hawkins family can save them.

To see if the Hawkins family can save the synths, tune in to AMC at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Big Brother, The Strain, Food Network Star, The Last Ship, Falling Skies, Show Me a Hero, and The Brink.

Gemma Chan as Anita - Humans _ Season 1, Episode 1 - Photo Credit: Des WillieSunday nights have become an insane night of TV for me — while I’m looking forward to checking out the series finales of Nurse Jackie and American Odyssey and the season premiere of Falling Skies, the thing I’m most looking forward to tonight is the series premiere of the new AMC series Humans. This sci-fi drama is set in an alternate present where synthetic humans known as Synths have become commonplace — every household seems to have one of these robotic servants, except the Hawkins family. Joe Hawkins (Tom Goodman-Hill, Mr. Selfridge) is overwhelmed with taking care of the kids while wife Laura (Katherine Parkinson, The IT Crowd) works long hours, so he decides to get a Synth (Gemma Chan, Bedlam) to help out, much to his wife’s objections. While at first Anita seems to be making life easier, there is something creepy about her, and when questionable things start happening, the Hawkins family starts to question the ramifications of living with a machine.

The series sets up a really fascinating parallel universe and raises some really interesting social ramifications of creating these robots to do all of our work and act as slaves. However, it also sets up a fascinating mystery that spans into three other concurrent storylines — are there Synths that go beyond their programming and can think and feel human emotions? And what are the dangers of this happening? The series also stars Colin Morgan (Merlin), William Hurt (Damages), Rebecca Front (The Wrong Mans), Neil Maskell (Utopia), and Will Tudor (Game of Thrones).

On tonight’s episode, the Hawkins family buys a robot servant called a Synth in the opener of this series based on a Swedish sci-fi drama. They soon begin to suspect, however, that they may be in danger from this highly-developed machine and the man in search of her.

To meet the family’s new Synth, tune in to AMC at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Big Brother, Celebrity Family Feud, BattleBots, American Odyssey, Golan the Insatiable, Food Network Star, The Last Ship, Falling Skies, Halt and Catch Fire, True Detective, Ballers, The Brink, and Nurse Jackie.
