Jenny’s Choice

Last week’s FBI hit way too close to home for Maggie in a couple of different ways. First up was the victim of the case-of-the-week, another FBI agent who was also married to an FBI agent. Maggie had been at Quantico with the victim’s wife, so she was friends with the couple. So his murder hit her hard, and she knew how his widow was feeling, since her husband had also been killed. But during the case, in which they figured out the lawyer killed him and a gang member and caught the gang leader who in turn killed the lawyer, they also figured out that the victim had been cheating on his wife. Only, when Maggie finally told her at the end, it turned out she already knew. That’s when Maggie learned from Kristen that Maggie’s husband had been exchanging late-night phone calls with a woman before his death. Kristen couldn’t tell her if those calls were business or personal, but we know that Kristen told OA that there didn’t seem to be any business reason for him to have called her. Right at the end, we saw Maggie go to the woman’s work and ask to see her. What we don’t know is what Maggie learned. I don’t know if we’ll find that out in tonight’s season finale or if we’ll just be left to speculate. Given the episode description, I think we’ll find out… Either way, it’s been a fun first season, and I can’t wait for season two already.

On tonight’s episode, “Closure,” a woman with information about the death of Maggie’s husband is abducted leading the team to uncover a criminal operation larger than anyone imagined. Also, Dana puts her career in jeopardy by standing by and allowing Maggie to work on the case, which has such a personal connection to her.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/9/19

Jenny’s Choice

The Halloween heist episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine are always fun, and tonight, there’s a special heist episode in the same vein, which is why it’s my pick tonight. Last week, Gina contacted Jake and asked him and Terry to come to her place. She’s become an internet superstar “influencer” and hadn’t been in touch much at all since leaving the 99, so Terry was a little upset about it. Jake tried to convince him to give her a chance. When they got there, they had to wait while she filmed some weird “Gina as Moses” bit, but then she told them that she had an appearance coming up and the people behind it were threatening to close it down if she didn’t get a police presence because she’d gotten some death threats. During the guarding, Jake learned Gina had canceled on drinks with them for work and got upset. But in the end, after Gina was stabbed in the back by the husband of a woman who took Gina’s “advice” and left him because he concentrated more on parkour than her, she and Jake made up. Meanwhile, the side stories were Holt convincing Boyle that his son was a genius (when it turned out Nikolaj was just drawing a superhero logo and not solving a big math problem) and Amy trying to convince Rosa she could ask for help when she was trying to handle everything on her own with both of her hands out of commission. Both were fun story lines.

On tonight’s episode, “Cinco de Mayo,” in order to distract Terry from the stress of his upcoming lieutenant’s exam, Jake, Holt, and the squad decide to hold the annual Halloween heist on a new date, Cinco de Mayo.

Megan’s Choice

Max has been having a rough time lately on New Amsterdam because Sharpe has stopped being his oncologist due to her trying to save their friendship, but his new doctor isn’t accepting his way of putting his treatment schedule off. The new doctor is adamant that he will not survive if he keeps putting hospital business above his own health, and she is very right. He has to start making the hard decisions for his own sake because his wife and daughter need him to be around.

On tonight’s episode, “Preventable,” Max is forced to reckon with his diagnosis in a new way, as things become more difficult for him. Meanwhile, Reynolds is forced to address what could have gone wrong in a recent surgery.

To see if Max can find a new way to fight his cancer, tune in to NBC at 10/9c.

Kyle’s Choice

Today, YouTube Premium released the 10-episode second season of the highly-entertaining Cobra Kai, a follow-up series to The Karate Kid, taking place 34 years after the original film and finding former enemies Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) rekindling their old rivalry. Johnny blames all of his life’s misfortunes on Daniel and the way things played out at the All Valley karate tournament three decades earlier. So as a way to find redemption, he decides to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo, taking in other social outcasts, toughening them up, and teaching them the No Mercy motto of the Cobra Kai. His top student is Miguel Diaz, who happens to be Daniel’s daughter Samantha’s boyfriend. Meanwhile, Daniel has become a successful businessman, turning his All Valley fame into a way to sell cars. As a way to find balance in his life, Daniel decides to mentor a karate student Robby Keene – who, unbeknownst to him, is Johnny’s estranged son – teaching him the much more peaceful methods he learned from his own mentor, Mr. Miyagi. After several personal clashes throughout the season, things came to a head at the 50th Anniversary All Valley Under-18 Karate Championship, where once again the Cobra Kai utilized unethical methods, with Miguel exploiting Robby’s injured shoulder in order to win the match. As the season ended, Johnny found a shadowy figure waiting for him back at the dojo – his former mentor John Kreese (Martin Kove), who was thought to have been dead.

The second season picks up right where that jaw-dropping moment left off. Where has Kreese been all these years, and why has he returned now? What are his plans for the Cobra Kai dojo he created, and is he going to sit idly by and let Johnny run things? Meanwhile, Daniel decides to open his own dojo in order to fight back against Cobra Kai. However, he’s having trouble finding new students for his less flashy form of Miyagi-do karate, leaving him just two students – Robby and his daughter Samantha (though that’s one more than he had last season!).

The second season is one about love, forgiveness, redemption, and good versus evil. The series does an excellent job of making you question who is the real bully in this story – Johnny or Daniel. Johnny is in a constant struggle to better his life and do the right thing, but nothing ever seems to go as planned, and when he tries to do the right thing and things go wrong, he never gets credit for it. So why does he even bother? Why not just be the villain everyone seems to think he is?! Meanwhile, Daniel may seem like the nice guy, but when Johnny’s around, he turns into a bit of jerk. He’s also letting his obsession with the dojo take over the other aspects of his life.

I thoroughly enjoyed this second season – once I started, I binged my way straight the way through all ten episodes. Throughout the series, there is this nice parallel and contrast between the Miyagi-do and Cobra Kai training methods. While the ultimate goals and lessons are the same, the way these two dojos go about their training is vastly different. Over the course of the season, there are some really nice character arcs and growth, both for the adults as well as their students. As with the first season, the writers have done an excellent job of weaving in footage from the original film as a way to provide both backstory and to explain motivations and actions in the present. While the first season focused on the rivalry between Miguel and Robby, this season we get more of Hawk (Jacob Bertrand) and his former (pre-Hawk) nerdy best friend Demetri (Gianni Decenzo). Plus there’s some fun new students and additions to the cast, including Paul Walter Hauser (Kingdom). The second season also sees the return of several characters from the film. It is another great season that culminates in an exciting, action-packed finale that will have you screaming at the TV for a third season.

Jenny’s Choice #1

Tonight is the series premiere of The Code on CBS. Half drama, half procedural, this new legal thriller is about the active-duty Marines who are also attorneys working out of the Judge Advocate General Headquarters in Quantico. They are trained as a prosecutor, a defense lawyer, and an investigator and choose to serve their country in pursuit of military justice at home and overseas. Luke Mitchell (Blindspot, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Tomorrow People) stars as Captain John “Abe” Abraham, a driven prosecutor who comes from a family of Marines. Anna Wood (Falling Water, Deception, Reckless) plays his colleague and friend, Captain Maya Dobbins, the lead defense attorney not afraid to go up against one of her own but also a team player if the situation calls for it. Ato Essandoh (Chicago Med, Altered Carbon, Blue Bloods, Copper) plays Major Trey Ferry, Abe’s superior officer and friend. One of my favorite actresses, Dana Delaney (Hand of God, Body of Proof, Desperate Housewives) stars as commanding officer Colonel Glenn Turnbull, one of the highest-ranking female officers in the Judge Advocate Corps. She’s tough but fair and demands an excellence in herself and her staff. And finally, assisting the team is Lt. Harper Li (played by Phillipa Soo, Smash), a highly capable lawyer who is eager to take on bigger cases, and tech-savvy, efficient Warrant Officer Rami Ahmadi (played by Raffi Barsoumian, The Vampire Diaries), the Marine equivalent of a paralegal.

I’ve seen the first episode quite enjoyed it. It’s a bit too much drama for me, but I love the cast so much (Besides the ever delightful Delany, I loved Mitchell on Blindspot, Wood on Reckless, & Essandoh on Chicago Med & Blue Bloods) and the military and procedural aspects of it that I’m in for at least a few more episodes.

On tonight’s episode, “Blowed Up,” when a soldier in Afghanistan murders his commanding officer, Capt. John “Abe” Abraham and Capt. Maya Dobbins, working out of the Judge Advocate General Headquarters in Quantico, Va., are assigned to the case as prosecution and defense lawyers.
