Recap/Review – This Is Us – 2/21/17

This week’s episode of This Is Us (titled: “Memphis”) delved into William’s past while he and Randall took a road trip to Memphis.

Recap
We catch up with Randall and Beth at his psychiatrist’s office. Randall had been hospitalized after his breakdown, and Beth was worried about him and William traveling to Memphis. The doctor clears him for travel, and they prepare for their journey. William says good-bye to his granddaughters before he and Randall take off on the open road.

During the trip, we flash back to William’s early life. His father was killed in the line of duty, leaving William and mother alone. They are very close, which presents a problem for William when his mother leaves to care for her sick mother in Pennsylvania. She wants him to pursue his dreams in Memphis. William plays in his cousin’s (Ricky’s) cover band and their audiences are small until William presents his cousin with a song that makes their band the talk of the town. Soon they are performing for packed houses. One night, William receives a call that his mother is sick. He says good-bye to his cousin and promises to bring him back sixty songs.

I’m so happy because tonight is the Major Crimes winter premiere. For the first time in its five-season run, it’s airing on Wednesdays instead of Mondays. I’ve got my fingers crossed that the audience will follow it, since this is one of my favorite shows.

When we last left off in September, the arc of the Dwight Darnell/Zyklon Brotherhood murders finally wrapped up. Dwight’s mother learned that his father (Martin Borja, who worked with the City Housing Authority) set the entire thing up, and she agreed to go in wearing a wire to talk to him. Unfortunately for Martin, she was angry enough that he’d gotten their son killed that she grabbed his gun and killed him before the police could rush in. In the midst of all that was a young boy whose mother was killed. Sanchez had become his foster father, but in the finale, they found the boy’s biological grandparents, which meant Sanchez had to give him up, right as the boy had become happy and comfortable with him. The other big story arc for a while has been Buzz working to solve the cold case of his father’s & uncle’s murders. He finally found the guy (with a little help from Rusty) and had him arrested, but it was a little hollow, since the guy had turned his life around and was a stand-up guy, married with kids of his own. And finally, Flynn! Andy had a heart attack just as the episode was wrapping up. What a way to leave off before the five-month break!

I’ve seen tonight’s episode, and it’s a lot of fun and sets up the remaining half of the season. I can’t wait to rewatch it and catch all the other new episodes after this week’s!

On tonight’s episode, “Heart Failure,” when Captain Sharon Raydor and the Major Crimes Division investigate the murder of a young woman found in the LA River, their case is not only impeded by a secretive PI working for a tech industry millionaire, but also by Deputy Chief Winnie Davis (guest star Camryn Manheim), who regards Sharon as competition for the promotion to Assistant Chief of the LAPD.

Learn Andy’s fate and meet Sharon’s competition tonight on TNT at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Blindspot, The Goldbergs, Hunted, Lethal Weapon, Criminal Minds, Law & Order: SVU, Modern Family, black-ish, Bakers vs. Fakers, Chicago PD, Match Game, & Six.

Last week’s Wesen on Grimm was creepy – and that’s saying something, considering how many different, creepy Wesens we’ve seen throughout the series! A guy living at a rundown hotel was freaking out because he swore a monster was attacking him when he went to sleep, so he’d driven himself crazy by staying awake as much as possible. Turns out it was the hotel’s owner, who couldn’t sleep unless she stole it from others. And she did that by turning into this monster-looking thing with a huge, gaping mouth with lots of teeth-looking/sucker things and basically swallowing the person’s face as she siphoned out the sleep pheromones or whatever. It was creepy. LOL Meanwhile, back at the Spice Shop, Monroe, Rosalee, and Eve figure out that the symbols Eve carved in the tunnel are a calendar – a mix of different centuries and civilizations, such as Sumerian and Mayan – but instead of being a date in the far-distant past…it’s a future date: March 24, 2017! What the…?? I guess we’ll find out!

I’ve seen tonight’s episode, and it’s honestly one of the funniest ones of the series. I laughed out loud so many times. Hank, especially, was hysterical. Russell Hornsby kills it in this one. My favorite Hank episode ever, I think. Plus, we get more Diana creepiness but with an amusing twist.

On tonight’s episode, “Blind Love,” Rosalee surprises Monroe with a getaway for his birthday and invites most of the gang to join them. Things take a shocking turn when a hotel employee targets Nick in an effort to avenge his father. Meanwhile, Eve gets a visit from a dark force that she has seen before. Elsewhere, Capt. Renard spends the weekend with Diana when a former ally decides to get even.

See what happens on the birthday getaway tonight on NBC at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Last Man Standing, MacGyver, Rosewood, Hawaii Five-0, & Blue Bloods.

NBC’s Superstore is always one of the highlights of my Thursday night TV watching. Last week it was Valentine’s Day at Cloud 9, and Amy and Glenn tried to play matchmaker for Myrtle, but their attempts to set her up with another elderly employee resulted in a sexual harassment investigation. Meanwhile, Garrett learned about Mateo’s secret relationship with Jeff and tried to push his jealousy over Sandra’s pretend relationship to the boiling point. And Jonah went undercover to help Dina catch a shoplifter, but he ended up falling for his mark. So Dina made sure to burn that potential relationship to the ground by pretending that Jonah was the deadbeat father to her children. But in the end, Jonah was back to joking and having a good time with Amy as the two cleared the store of its Valentine’s Day decorations.

Earlier this week, NBC announced the wonderful news that Superstore had been picked up for a third season. This series just keeps getting funnier and funnier – this ensemble cast just works so well together and has really found their groove. When I was watching the show last week, I couldn’t help but be reminded of The Office, when that show was really firing on all cylinders. I’m so happy there are plenty more crazy adventures to come for the Cloud 9 crew.

On tonight’s episode, “Super Hot Store,” angry tensions magnify when the store’s thermostat breaks, leaving the staffers miserably hot inside Cloud 9. Meanwhile, Dina and Garrett find a way to pass the time, and Cheyenne helps Glenn through an existential crisis as he tries to fix the heater.

See how Dina and Garrett occupy themselves tonight on NBC at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Grey’s Anatomy, The Big Bang Theory, The Great Indoors, Life in Pieces, Training Day, Powerless, The Blacklist, MasterChef Junior, My Kitchen Rules, Riverdale, Top Chef, and Colony.

Recap/Review – This Is Us – 2/14/17

This week’s episode of This Is Us (titled: “Jack Pearson’s Son”) was another emotional rollercoaster that put all of the Pearsons in tough spots.

Recap:

The past timeline
The Big Three are teenagers at this point, and Rebecca is about to leave for her tour with Ben and the band. Jack plans a special night for himself and Rebecca at O’Shannon’s for after her show on Valentine’s Day night. And while Jack seems very supportive, he admits to Miguel that he really doesn’t want her to go but also doesn’t want her to think he’s holding her back.

That afternoon, Rebecca overhears the Big Three talking about Kevin having sex with Sophie. When Rebecca and Jack sit down with Kevin to have “the talk,” Randall is having an anxiety attack about his Hamlet paper. Jack calms Randall down, ending the conversation with Kevin. Rebecca is worried that this isn’t the time for her to go on tour, and Jack reassures her, saying he can handle it.
